Leader: Regular Vs Leader

Featured Replies

I'm switching over to braid + fluro leader for my spinning finesse rigs.

I was assuming that I'd just use regular fluorocarbon line for the leader. However, I've just noticed several manufacturers make designated "leader" material.

Is it important to use the special "leader" fluro, or does regular fluro line work just fine?

Leader lines are more abrasion resistant than filler line, that said I cut my leaders from Ande mono. I have not experienced abrasion to being much of a problem for me, I do fish over rocks, coral and barnacles and will get cut off ( when I have a fish on), but would be cutoff with anything but steel. I no longer use florocarbon leaders, my strike rate seems to be the same.

i didnt see much of an advantage in flourocarbon line when fishing this past summer in shallow water and bluegills kept swimming up and attacking my line under the water...

Get the regular stuff. In my neck of the woods, it seems the leader spools are far lower in price and way more expensive. So I reckon if you're not going to be battling tuna, permit, or marlin, I'd buy the "regular" fc version vs. leader material.

leader spools of fc are much much tougher line then filler line is in bass fishing its not needed unless you are around zebra mussels then it would make a big difference over filler line being used as leader.

The object of a fc leader is to blend in with the water, it can be helpful in very clear water, I've used it for kingfish, but in reality I didn't get bit anymore( they will not hit with wire). In dirty water it doesn't make any difference there is no advantage to the line being invisible.
