Rage Tail Frog Help...

Featured Replies

I bought some rage tail frogs the other day after watching the video on them from this website. I was dying to try them out so I went to my local pond last night and boy was I disappointed. Not with the bait...but with myself. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but the frog keeps sinking. I thought this bait was a topwater bait. I'm using a 5/0 EWG hook and rigging it T-rigged. What am I doing wrong to make the bait sink?

The bait is meant to be fished like a buzzbait,it sinks at rest.Reel it in steady while varying speeds.

It's designed to be used on the top, but all that plastic makes it impossible to float on its own. Matter of fact I've never fished a frog shy of those that have the 2 hooks pre-rigged that floated. Don't worry about it anyway. I've caught more bass by letting it sink to the bottom and sit there for 10 seconds before burning it back to the boat. Same with the rage shad - it'll sink which is where I get a lot of strikes - remember that these baits are also deadly when the topwater bite is off. I've yet to catch a bass fishing the shad on top. But every time I've been out with one and let it hit bottom before slow rolling it back in underwater I've caught a 3 pounder.

There are baits of this type that do come in a floater model as well. Stanley ribbit has a floater as do Gambler and Sizmic.

Oh ok I was trying to let the bait sit there and float. So a steady reel back to the boat will keep this thing on top? And I will give it a try on the bottom as well. Thanks for the help guys. It seems like an awesome bait and I want to learn it.

Yeah I just keep a steady reel and rod tip up and those legs give some nice action

Just burn it back and cast it out again. Sometimes it takes a few casts to the same spot to draw a strike. If I don't have a follow up bait for a miss, like a Fat Ika or Senko, then I will let the frog sink for a second or two, then twitch it. About 25% of the time, this draws a strike after a miss. But don't spend too much time following up on misses, keep that toad burning.

For the most part it is made to kick up water on top but as with any rules they can be broken. You can let it sink as described and also use a twitch retrieve and also rig it on a keel weighted hokk and swim it along like a swimbait. Vary the speeds from a slight ripple to a loud boisterous burn. Oh btw, these kinds of baits don't work on a carolina rig either. 8-)
