Crankbait Rod

Featured Replies

Looking to get a 7' 10" crankbait rod for Christmas but I'm wondering what action I should get. A Medium action or a Medium Heavy? I want to throw big 6XD crankbaits and the 5XD. What would be the best action?

IMO medium-heavy. The big deep divers tend to "overpower" medium-action rods.

I'm using the Reese 7'10" crank rod with a Curado E5 for deep cranks. It's rated medium. I throw Norman DD22s with it most of the time and it will handle mid to deep cranks just fine. You pretty much have to lay your hands on whatever rods you are interested in and get a feel as the ratings are not always consistent between different brands.

I am using a 7'10" St Croix Legend Tournament "Magnum Cranker". It's rated as a Heavy power, but IMHO opinion is just right for deep diving cranks. I use 5xd's, 6xd's, the deeper Rapala DT's, slow rolling big spinnerbaits, lipless cranks, and small 1oz. or less hard swimbaits. I can't think of a better rod for me. It's a little too much rod for bandits, wiggle warts, 3xd's, 1/4 oz lipless baits. It's one of the few rods I have, or gave had, that toss and handle lures weights all along it's rating effortlessly.

ACTION OF RODS ARE MODERATE FAST , MODERATE , FAST , EXTRA FAST.

POWER OF THE RODS ARE ULTRA LIGHT , LIGHT , MEDIUM LIGHT , MEDIUM , MEDIUM HEAVY , HEAVY , EXTRA HEAVY.

There is a differance between power and action. B)

IMO one of the best "bang for your buck" rods is the St Croix Mojo 7'8" Glass rod. It's a GREAT rod for big deep divers and for big squarebills like the BDS 4 and 2.5 size baits. I've been fishing it through the year and have been very impressed with it. It's not a Lamiglas but it doe a fine, fine job with those baits. It's also far lighter than a lot of the rods in that same class that cost a considerable amount more money.

Another rod you might consider is the W+M big crank S glass rods. They're not a bad value.

What do you all think about the Quantum Tour KVD 7' 10" rod? It comes in two actions, Meduim and Meduim Heavy.

I didn't like the KVD at all in MH, it was very weak, didn't have enough bones for me.

Get the Shimano Crucial Crankbait Rod in 7'11' rated MH with fast tip. I have one and it seems to me tip is closer to med-fast than fast. No matter what the tip really is, it is a great crank rod. I have had mine for over a year and like it more than some custom glass rods I have for cranks.
