I was set on buying the Dobyns 765 FLIP until the Recon series came out. I havent used one, but all the reviews on Tackletour forums say that they are top notch and $90 less than the Dobyns. Im probably ordering one Black Friday!

They are nice rods, but IMO they are not as sensitive as the Dobyns or Cumura or even Crucial for that matter. However, some guys swear by these rods and say they're the hands down best at that price point. Make up your mind by this weekend and you'll even save 20% with Black Friday sales.

From what I've heard, they should be incredible. Lots and lots of really good reviews. I say swing it and try one!

I'm not a fan of the Phenix line. I've fished several different rods and haven't found one that will stand up to the competition in its class. They're heavy by comparison to almost everything in the same category and they're not very true in their actions. My money would go to other series first.

I have not tried the Phenix Recon but I have 4 Phenix UMBX, a DX703C and 3 Cumara. The UMBX is definitely lighter by at least 2 oz compared to DX, lighter than Cumara by 0.5 oz for the same rating. Plus they are balanced just like the DX.

Due to your vague description of what rod/rods your talking about I don't know if your talking about the recons or phenix in general. I have only fished the recons so that's what ill address as I currently have the 714 and 764.

Nothing in your post is even slightly true. In fact its the complete opposite of the truth.

First off the weights are not only competitive but they are actually lighter than a lot of rods at and above there price range. Proven not only by the feel in hand but also the thread entitled recon rod weights on tackletour.com.

Second balance is very good. They balance better than my comparable cumaras. Their exceptional balance is also supported by the thread entitled champion vs recon that puts there balance in the same class as dobyns and we all know how much people love the balance of dobyns rods. In fact of the two specific models the poster uses the recon has a better balance point. Also of the few people in the thread who have used both they all prefer the recons, and said they will be swithcing out all there rods. I prefer mine to my cumaras as well.So again not only do they compete in their price range but above it.

Now on to the actions. Every manufacturer has their own ratings and tips. If they couldn't make a good blank I don't think they would have such a strong following among custom builders. The recons specifically are exactly what I expect and the 714 is the most versatile rod I have. I hate to bring up tackletour again but perhaps you would like to see the thread entitled recon question in which a loomis fan says the 714 is more versatile than the 843 and says depending on which line its a better buy.

Based on the blanks weight from Phenix website:

The recon blanks are practically lighter than the UMBX for the same rating.

UMBX-700H 7' 10-20 Fast; Lure rating = 3/8 - 1 1/4; Weight = 2.2 oz

PHX-C715H recon 7'1" 10 -25 Fast; Lure rating = 3/8 - 1 1/2; Weight = 2.0 oz

Considering they use the same guides and handles weights, it will come out about the same weight or even a tad lighter as the UMBX which about 3.7oz for a 7' Heavy Fast action.

That's a d**n good guess baluga. The TT thread has the 715 weighing 3.65 oz.
