Who Uses Flippin Switches? What Reels?

Recommended Posts

I actually always use them when flipping. I know a lot of people never do and some people probably don't even know what they are. I use an old school Team Daiwa TD1pi for flippin but the right hand retreve is killing me. I've had that reel for 15 years but out of the blue I deceided I cant use RH retreve any more. Anyways, it seems like flippin switches are pretty rare nowadays. What reels have them, I've been looking at the Quantum Accurist but dont see many other options.

Look in the Pitching Reels thread below. There are some pictures of lefty daiwas with the release on the top of the reel. These are different than redundant/automatic/instagage.... designs which IMO are more trouble than they're worth.

I flip so rarely, that switch isn't even a consideration when I look at reels to get. I might have a reel with a flippin switch among my old, retired reels, but I don't think I've got one in the 20 or so reels that are in the regular rotation. Now pitching, that's a different story. I use a Calcutta TEGT with the 11 ball bearings. With that reel 14 to 20 lb fluorocarbon and a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce weight, I feel like my pitching range is unlimited. 20 to 40 feet is easy and I can hit 60 if I feel like it.

I have both the older accurist model and the new model accurist as well. I have used the older model and its held up well over the past couple of years with no complaints. The new model hasn't even seen line yet but it will soon before the freeze over up my way.

Hey do you know which reel is older between the accurist 2 AC501cx and the accurist AC501pt? The accurist 2 is the one that came out in 3 different colors, gold, blue, and red. The AC501pt is silver. I was going to buy one on ebay and wanted the newer model but can't find anything on what order they were produced.

The Accurist 2 AC501cx is the older of the 2 models with it coming out in 2005. The Accurist AC501pt came out in roughly 2007 with a good write up on the AC501cx on TT posted below. The newest model is the dark grey with red accents which came out just a couple years ago. I have both PT versions being the AC501PT and the latest dark grey versions and actually purchased both off ebay as well.

Wow, thanks for all that information, that was exactly what I was looking for. I just got a 501pt for $40 bucks on ebay and that includes shipping. Great deal the guy has 2 more if anyone is interested. Thanks,

Dan

No problem Dan and I think I picked mine up for about the same price.

I own one reel with a flippin' switch and I couldn't tell you whether it works or not because I've never used it. Most of the waters that I fish don't have the kind of cover that requires flippin'.

Ya most people seem not to use them anymore. I actually use mine a lot for both flippin and pitchin.

I use the Core 100mgfv and I love the flipping switch. It is my favorite reel. I have a couple core 50's and Calais but the core 100 mgfv for me is the best reel for fliiping. I put it on a Cumara flipping stick and its a beast of a combo.
