Lead Band In Mass

Featured Replies

Anyone out there know where I can get lead free bass jigs, other than tungsten?

Or is anyone out there in the jig making bussiness?

Bismuth is probably the closest to lead's characteristics but weighs about 80% what lead does. In some circles there is doubt about what the level of enforcement will be. I know we can't pick and choose what laws to obey, but really.

DVT is right. I made jigs in the past and had priced up a bismuth alloy and it was about 5X more than lead. I remember pure bismuth was more and I can't remeber how much that was. I did the research a couple of years ago, so I don't know what this alloy costs today. You have also got to factor in not only the 5X cost for the material alone, but if you want a 3/8 oz jig, you need to make one the size of a 1/2 oz one (assuming you're using a mold made for lead).

$20 a pound for Bismuth, I get my lead for well under $1 per pound.

I remember the EPA tried to ban lead in michigan last year. That sucks man, but the only things I can think of are tungsten and tin. I know that if they are about to pass that in Michigan, that I will be buying up as much lead sinkers and scrap lead I can buy.

Tin is more$$$$ per pound tungsten is $71 and can not be produced by the average home guy

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm not looking to make my own jigs but, did look into it.

Looking for already made or maybe jigs that just need paint & finishing touches?

Got a local guy here in mass making jigs from tin/bismuth alloy. Just shopping around to see what else is out there.
