What size split rings for Spooks?

Featured Replies

Hey there...

Looking to add split rings to my Spooks...seems like the ones I have without them get thrown by fish more often.

As I've never done this, I'm for advice on what brand and size of split rings to use on these.

Thanks,

Robert

I can't tell you brand, but get a brand that is stainless steel or some other anti-rust material. As to size, get about a #4 or one size bigger or smaller. You want to avoid rings that are large enough to cause the hooks to tangle and/or pick up more weeds.

I don't add split rings to lures that don't already come with one, I don't see the point.  I use a basic loop knot on 90% of my lures.

Couple of other options to try, oval split rings will keep your knot off the joint on regular split rings or Normans' speed clips.

HE MAY BE TALKING ABOUT ADDING SPLIT-RINGS TO THE HOOKS.

Didn't sound like hooks to me, how would the hooks been attached if not for a split ring?

IMO split ring or not would have little or no bearing on whether the fish slips the hook.

So those little hook hangers on lures such as jitterbugs, devils horse, and original spook are better than or the same as using split rings?!!? ::( I better let all the crankbait manufacturers know they are doing it wrong. The hook only moves one way with those things and has no rotation whatsoever. Very easy for a fish to gain leverage plus it also rips the holes in their mouth open wider.

Better yet, what I do is add a second split ring to the already existing ones on my topwaters. This allows a full rotation of the trebles and just plain sticks the fish. I am not the only one.A lot of pros do that as well, and I also learned that trick from somebody on this forum a while back.

Loop knots have no bearing on what the hooks are doing either.

Yep I was talking about adding rings to the hooks so they can move more freely.

Sorry for the confusion on this one...  :-[

Most of us knew what you were talking about.

Yes, this is a common modification for Spooks.  I use them on mine but I can't remember the size and I'm at work where I can't look at them.  I think I have #4s on my Spooks as Marty suggested.
