Is This Normal?

Featured Replies

I have a Diawa Procast Tournament 1006bi casting reel, and the drag on this thing is extremely I guess heavy? Like I pretty much have to pull with all my force just to get some line out. Is this normal for baitcasters? I'm using 12lb flouro with a 7 foot MH rod so maybe it doesn't matter? But I'm gonna be flipping jigs into cover, and some cranking with this reel so I don't want to put a lot of stress on the rod and maybe break it. I looked on BPS and it says this reel has 8.8 lbs of drag power, what exactly does that mean? Just kinda concerns me that it takes pretty much all my pulling just to gt any line out when I put the drag at pretty much the loocest it can go.

Thanks in advance,

No its not normal

If a reel's max drag is 8#, it should take 8# of pulling weight to slip the drag when cranked down. When loosened, the line should pull off effortlessly. The value of the reel is not high, but if you'd like to send it in I'll be happy to take a look.

Sounds like you need to send it into Mike (DVT). Sounds to me like you have had the drags cranked down at one time and they have stuck. Mike (DVT) needs to brake the reel down and clean up the main gear.

Send it in!

How tight is the cast control?

Well I've only fished with it three times, over this last summer. That's when I noticed something wrong about it. I had a nice fish on with the drag really low, and still the fish couldn't pull any line out. Maybe I just got a deffective reel? :Idontknow:

No it's not normal

The drags are sticking............. :Victory:

Is your spool tension too tight? I know this may sound obvious but you do know how to loosen the drag, right? You turn the drag star backwards or if you are looking straight at it, you turn it to the left. Try looking at the pinned thread about setting up a baitcaster.

By cast control I mean the round knob usually found under the star drag. Put a bait or weight on your line. Hold thr rod horizontal. Push the thumb bar and take your finger off the spool. Loosen the cast control knob (usuall counter clockwise) and at some point the bait should start to fall. Normal adjustment is when the bait his the ground the spool stops turning.

I can't be sure of your reel but I've never seen a cast control with numbers.

Sounds like the OP is talking about the brakes, not the spool tension...
