Need Help With Next Setup

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I need some help with what type of setup I should get for my next rod/reel combo. I usually fish in a large pond from a john boat, but also occasionally the lake on the back of my neighbor's boat. Here are the setups I currently have:

  • Daiwa Procaster / Daiwa Tierra 7' MH Rod - used mainly as my jig rod (favorite technique)
  • Daiwa Regal-XiA / Abu Garcia Vengeance 6'9" M Rod - used for T-rigged worms, shakey heads, etc.

I'm looking to spend no more than $200 for the combo. I can't decide if I want to get a cranking setup, or a higher quality all-around set up.

Thanks, and all help is appreciated!

A MH/Mod and a good strong reel cranking setup will have you covered for pretty much any common bass fishing scenario. Once that hole is plugged you can start adding technique specific and duplicate setups.

If I was in your shoes, I would look for a used Dobyns Champion 734c for ~$140, and throw a good condition used Citica 200E on it.

Might look into a 6'6 M action Fast tip rod with a 6.3-1 gear ratio reel. Can get away with throwing alot of different baits on this combo. Spinnerbaits, topwaters, jerkbaits, crankbaits. Might not be the best set up individually for each bait, but you can get by with that for any of these. Not advocating this brand, but an example would be a BPS extreme combo for $160 or look in flea market for a deal on good used ones.
