Hey guys... need some help picking up a dual purpose rod if possible to throw both deep divers and small swimbaits (such as hollow bellies and small custom pours with trebles). I've heard great things about the Dobyns 765 CB (glass), including a stiffer tip than most glass rods that would excel as a multipurpose rod, but I was hoping someone had some experience trying to throw small swimbaits with a deep cranking rod. I currently have a Lamiglas XL705 glass CB rod, but it is too whippy for anything beyond medium depth cranks.

I'm hesitant to lay down $200+ on a rod only dedicated for deep cranking, but it's a done deal if it can also throw the small swimbaits. Any thoughts/recommendations would be great. Thanks!

You might be alright with treble swim baits, but I wouldn't want to try and set the hook on a hollow belly with a rod that flexes enough for what I would think deep divers would need.

Just my musings, as I have never dealt with a deep diving crank rod, much less that specific one.

It depends on what you're calling a small swimbait. For what I envision, I'd probably throw them on the same rod as a spinner-bait. For a deep cranking rod a Lamiglas SR705 R can't be beat. The current version is XCF 705R but I'm not positive if that is on the exact same blank or not.

IMO don't overlook the Cumara 7-11. The XF is a little overpowered for DD cranks, but it does handle them well, as well as protect hooks, but if fishes small swimbaits very, very well.

I'm going to have to go take a look at one of these guys because I'll probably be throwing small swimbaits with this rod more than DD's and I can't imagine the the 7'11" would be more overpowered than the Lami that I'm using for them now. Does it have enough tip to protect the trebles and launch 1/2oz baits (lower limit of rating)?

Definitely launches 1/2 ounce baits with ease. I'm not going to state that the rod is an ideal rod for fishing deep cranks, but it does have enough protection built in. Where the rod REALLY excels is fishing traps and such in heavy cover. I fish a lot of hard bodied baits on it, like the giron, JSJ, and Shellcracker. It's a perfect rod for those baits.

I have the Dobyns Champion 705G and a Lamiglas SR705R and sold both my XL705Gs. I would never consider the Excel, too soft. The SR705R is a weak maybe. The XCF705R is the same blank as the old model designator. I would consider the Dobyns 765 for SMALL swimbaits and hollow belly baits. I have thrown squarebills with my 705 and even though it is a graphite glass composite, it shuts off so the back bone is solid for secure hook sets. For deep cranking....the 765 will be sweet. My hollow belly rod is a Savvy 733 Micro.
