About to try my hand at swimbait fishing

Featured Replies

I went to Academy yesterday and picked up a pack of 5 inch yum money minnows and a pack of 5 inch big bite baits super shads, a pack of eagle claw swimbait hooks in 6/0 and a pack of H&H flutter hooks swimbait hooks.

Now - what do I need to know about fishing these things? Tackle, favorite techniques - best places etc. Blame it on the swimbait video recently posted. I'm supremely impressed with the quality of both company's swimbaits. I picked up the bluegill pattern in the big bite and the foxy shad pattern in the money minnow - my favorite pond has zero shad and a ton of bluegill.

Any insight into these things would help. If I get hooked on these things I imagine i'll be buying the jawjacks from brent from now on

thanks for the post, dude. i just picked up some swimbaits as well, and was gonna ask about the very same thing.

Cast and retrieve like a spinnerbait.  Very simple.  I like to rub the cavity and hook shank down with MegaStrike, aids in easier hooksets.  Also, take a look at the Owner Beast hooks.  Great hookup rate with these.

I've yet to really jump on the swimbait wagon, but I have a couple FAT Money Minnows, and I imagine the same rules apply for the smaller sizes (maybe even more-so).  BE PERFECTLY CENTERED with your rigging.  Especially with the weighted hooks.  even a bit twisted or offcenter makes it swim off line.  Also be sure to skin the hook up top neatly too.  I think if it humps up any too much it will alter its action too (in a bad way)

This is my good buddy Matt Peters who is a transplant from So-Cal. He has figured out the swimbait deal in your neck of the woods. Look as see what he has to say on his website and blogs:
