National Signing Day

Wednesday, February 1 is National Signing Day for high school seniors to select their universities.

Let's read how you favorite school did in the recruiting race this year so post your take on your favorite school's results.

LSU had two good things happen on Monday.

1. Adam Henry of the Raiders is going to LSU to coach the wide receivers. Adam Henry is in his fifth year with the Raiders, the third in his present capacity, coaching the Silver and Black’s tight ends.

2. Quarterback Jeremy Liggins of Mississippi committed to LSU over almost all of the SEC schools. He is out of the Cam Newton mold.

Should be an interesting day for college football fans across the nation.

In other football news, LSU is in the process of hiring Oakland Raiders tight end coach Adam Henry as the Tigers' wide receivers coach to fill the vacancy left by Coach Billy Gonzales. Henry has ties to Louisiana and East Texas, a master's degree in education, and pro coaching experience. Originally from Beaumont, Texas, Henry played his college ball at McNeese State where he was an outstanding receiver. As a coach, Henry held various positions with McNeese State including offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and receivers coach, and then spent the last four years coaching in the pro ranks with the Oakland Raiders. I like that Henry has close ties to Louisiana and to Texas, and that should be a plus in recruiting.

At ND we got a much needed five star QB in Gunner Keil. He should fit it nicely to Kelly's spread offense. We don't have anybody to fill Michael Floyd's shoes yet, but it ain't over till it's over. I'd love to see five star WR Dorial Green Beckham come to ND, but I think it is unlikely. I hope Brain Kelly and staff haven't given up on one-time ND commit Ronald Darby. He can flat out fly and if there's anything we need, it is elite speed. I think he'll end up at corner. Both of our starting corners have graduated. Another great get would be five star athlete Davonte Neal. Quick twitch slashing runner would fit nicely at ND.

Overall a solid top ten recruiting class, but I think with a couple more top names added, it could potentially be a class to compete with the SEC schools.

I think the SEC, specifically Alabama, has got the "snowball effect" going in recruiting right now. It's tough to compete with those schools. We shall see...

Alabama #1 in recruiting. Now it just matter of those players developing into their potential. Be interesting see how WR corp look like next year with all of those hyped up players that are coming in. It all lays in the hand of the new offense coordinator and timing with McCarron. The defense will be talent, but inexperience. The recruiting ranking don't mean anything if they get in trouble, cannot adjust at college level quickly, or learn the playbook. Hopefully they will, because we smell another national championship. :)

Root Beer, my old college friend created a scoring system to determine how good was any one recruiting class.

Here is his formula, as best I remember it. I think he may have used different points but you can see what he was doing.

PAYING TIME POINTS

Started Freshman Year 5

Freshman All Conference 5

Freshman All-American 10

Started Sophomore Year 5

Sophomore All Conference 5

Sophomore All-American 10

Started Junior Year 5

Junior All Conference 5

Junior All-American 10

Started Senior Year 5

Senior All Conference 5

Senior All-American 10

NFL Draft 1st Round 25

NFL Draft 2-4 Rounds 15

NFL Draft 5+ Rounds 10

Set College Records 15 Each Season or Career

Set NCAA Records 15 Each Season or Career

You total the points after each player’s career is over and then total all the recruits for a grand total. By doing this you can actually note how well the class performed.

I don’t know if he ever used the formula but it is a nice retrospective view of how valuable the class was to the football program.

You can make up your own formula and see how the various classes performed.

FSU, landed 6 five star recruits and had the highest average player rank per recruit, but only finished 10th overall. I can't wait until we are back on top soon.

LSU did OK.

We lost one kid to Texas and the top player in Louisiana to Alabama because the kid's girlfriend is going to Bama.

Overall, LSU filled the team needs which is not reflected in the Rivals or 247 or Scout standings.

As for the "star system" it has proven not to be exactly a great predictor of how the young man will play in college. As you all know, there is a great difference between suiting up for 15, 16, 17 and 18 year old opponents as opposed to strapping it on for mature men 20 to 24 years old with a lot of experience and coaching.

The biggest surprise of the day is when the five star wide receiver shunned Notre Dame and went to Houston. Houston? Don't understand his thinking when Gunner Kiel is going to be starting his career at South Bend and the balls will be flying all over the field.

FSU has a great class and I look forward to seeing the Seminoles rise to the top of the ACC and challenge for the BCS championship.

Credit to the #1 player in the country who stayed home and is going to Missouri. I guess joining the SEC has some positive results.

Now to sit back, write Miles a letter telling him how disapponted I was in the BCS game exectuion and then wait for baseball season to start.

Geaux Tigers!

Biggest surprise of the day for me was seeing Stanford get a top 10 class. It will be pretty cool seeing an RB of Sanders' quality running the ball for the Cardinal. OU had a good class again and it seems like the top powers in all the main BCS conferences did pretty well.

I read an article yesterday in ESPN magazine about recruiting and the main point was that there is no correlation between strong recruiting classes and successful CFB seasons. During the years between 2006 and 2010, Frank Beamer at VT, and Brian Kelly at Cincy and ND had twelve recruits rated at two stars or less. ALL have one thing in common, they all were drafted into the NFL. Coaching and player development is the key.

Scrutch, Michael Vick was not a highly rated recruited out of high school.

Look what Beemer's assistants did to him!

Vick's brother was sought after and look what happened to him. Kicked out of the program.

Little Beemer said this morning on the Siriusxm College Football show with Bill King that historically of the 25 players given scholarships each year only 17 or 18 will actually see playing time.

And then there are the walk-ons who are not rated that high that excel in college.

Go figure.

U got it Sam...it's a crap shoot.

The good coaches are looking for players they think can be developed into stars, not necessarily stars. Most of the reason the coaches are trying to get the top players with regards to stars is mostly just for physical development and attitude.

They're basically looking for the right canvas to paint their masterpiece on.

Some coaches paint like kindergartners (Houston Nutt), some are Picassos (Nick Saban, Brian Kelly) IMO.

Root Beer, yes I saw it and guess what?

Miles was going to say "balls" but he realized where he was so he took another part of the body, the chest.

Don't know why the chest, but I guess that was the first thing that poped into his mind. Probably had Bourbon Street on his mind from being in New Orleans.

You see, Miles lost out on a 5-star lineman from Florida as LSU did not have a scholarship for him since Lee did not graduate and LSU was holding a scholarship for Gunner. Had Gunner told Miles that he was going to go to the Irish then Miles would have gotten the 5-star from Florida.

The 5-star lineman went to Awbunn. Can you believe that? Awbunn. A distant second place in the great state of Alabama.

Miles has two scholarships open as LSU lost a guy at the last minute to Texass and Miles is angry. He gave both scholarships to walk-ons which I think is great.

Nothing against Gunner staying home and making his parents happy but I don't see the wide receivers and fast backs at Notre Dame for him to throw the ball. Plus the fact that Kelly treats players like dirt during the games on the sideline when they screw up.

We will have to watch Gunner to see if he is going to play as a true freshman and how his career goes.

The hot topic now is that Vanderbilt out recruited ten of the Big 12 teams. Now that is funny. And Urban Slum Lord Myers is back at it, stretching the rules like he did at Florida.

Dealing with 17 and 18 year old children is not easy. They change their minds like we change our sox.

Isn't college football great???

South Florida, FSU will be back real soon.

Right now it is FSU and Virginia Tech as the top teams with Clepson and Georgia Tech being the closest also rans.

I can see Dumbo getting FSU back into the fight for the BCS Championship within two seasons.

After all, FSU is in the ACC and not the SEC. (Couldn't help myself)

As we all know SEC football is extremely competitive with the likes of LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Auburn as of late, but as we all know what goes up must come down. I can see USC, Florida State, and even Pac-12 contenders in the near future. Problem with the SEC is that the teams can literally shoot themselves down on the way to the coveted BCS Championship, given other BCS conference standouts a chance to be ranked number 1 at the end fo the season.

As a side note, FSU moved up the recruiting rankings literally overnight landing some more top recruits that did not commit this Wednesday! Yes, Alabama has the number 1 ranked class, but FSU had less recruits and higher quality, although subjective. This brings up a question to Alabama fans, how the heck does Saban have some many recruits sign, didn't he oversigning last year and then in has Saban way dumped players to medical scholarships or/and forced their hand to transfer to make room? Classy, right!

So as far as recruiting classes rankings go FSU and Alabama did a flip from 1 to 2 and 2 to 1 in 2011 and 2012 seasons. Now let's see if FSU can actually, but subjective rankings to good use like Satan!

Go Noles, Scalp'em!

I'm with you on this one. I love hearing the lip service the NCAA plays about "looking out for the best interests of the kids", but also allowing this oversigning, grayshirting and medical hardship crap go on in one certain conference.

You can only sign 25 players from high school. Two players from JUCO were signed. The JUCO players will not count towards 25 caps. Not to mention one of the players that enrolled right now, he originally signed in 2010 and is allowed be count as part of that class. He had go to JUCO get his grades back up or whatever then transfer back to Alabama. If you want talk about major over-signing in the SEC, take a look at Ole Miss last year. There was a statistic showing the last few years about average amount of over-signing in the SEC, and Alabama is actually ranked 4th or 5th on that list.

U of MN Gophers with 2nd year coach Jerry Kill Landed most of the better talent in Minnesotas recruiting class. In the past, most of our high profile recruits left the state.

Its a start for a horrible football program.

The problem is two years from now half of these kids will not be at the school that recruited them or they will not be in school at all. It looks good on paper but if you rate these classes 4 years later when they are supposed to be seniors everything changes. There are too many intangibles to get fired up over these ratings.
