Need Advice On These 4 Reels, Please.

Recommended Posts

Another flippin' stick somehow out of the blue appeared in my rod rack and it needs a reel. I plan on using 40-50 pound braid and would like advice on the following reels,

Quantum EXO PT

Quantum PT Smoke 150

Abu Revo Premier

Lews Tournament Pro

I currently have two Lews TP's and the 1st year model Premier.

I have not used my Lews for flipping or with braid, so let me know if you have and how you like it.

I currently use my Premier for filpping but not sure if I can find that years model and am willing to give the newer model or different reel a try.

Please give your advice from hands on experience.

Thanks.

Obviously you like the revo premier for flipping and it IS a great reel, just not what i would choose for flipping. I like a heavier reel, say a curado, for this. Just personal preference i guess. For me, this would put the exo out of the equation as well... As well, i am suspect to the ability of those lightweight gears to hold up to heavy winching.

On a side not, i have the 2009 model premier (not sure if this is the first model you were looking for) that i would consider selling or trading for a RH curado or chronarch...

I was thinking along the same lines as you, JKarol. I flip with my Premier but not heavy matted stuff.

I was hoping there was a lightweight reel that could handle the heavy stuff and perhaps the Curado will be the ticket. Or I could just stick with my Calcuttas, but I was hoping on a low profile under 7 ounces.

LOL, you're talking to the (ex)Sheriff of the Shimano Posse. I went to Lews after Shimano failed stick with the 50MG. My Lews are just plain AWESOME but I'll always keep my Calcuttas ;)

ive got a lews tp on one of my flippin/pitchin stick thats spooled with 50lb braid that i use for sparse cover all the way up to punchin some thick mats. its never given me an issue even when rippin a 7.5 pound hog outta some nasty stuff. im team lews all the way and think if you like the ones you have, get another and dont be afraid to use it for the nasty stuff. one reel i would highly recommend is the ardent f700. this thing is brutal! i know ardent isnt really known for quality but i think this reel is the exception to that. as soon as i get the extra cash, all my flippin sticks are gonna have one of these on em. this reels is the only exception ill make when it comes to reels other than lews.
