Jerkbait

Featured Replies

I went out yesterday with the 5 inch Limited edition Rogue on Sour Grape to some ponds by my house and found some bass, possibly a pod of bass, I was able to get a dink and a bass about 1.5 pounds and ended up missing 3, One of them almost fekt like a worm bite, It was a repeated tap. I was using a 6'6 rod with 10 pound Trilene. What is the best way to set the hook? And is a 6'6, 7'6, or 7' rod better? The hooks feel razor sharp, but should I Change them out to KVD trebles?

Side sweeping hookset. I like a fast or x-fast rod in medium power for this. I'm not tall, so I prefer a rod under 6' 6".

summed it up perfect. no need to change hooks, they should be plenty sharp.

I fish a jerkbait a lot and I too use a medium powered rod with a fast action. BTW, I like rogues a lot and one thing you really have to look at is the fish you caught, how were they hooked? By that I mean were they just barely hooked with the tail hook, or did they have the front two hooks? Like I said I love my rogues but you are fishing ponds and the rogue is a long bait, from the fact that you actually felt multiple taps tells me these were either small fish attempting to eat a bait bigger than they are, or these are fish that are interested but something isn't right. If you catch fish on a jerkbait that are barely hooked or you get some that just follow the bait it means you are using the right presentation as you have them interested but something is off, a lot of times it is just a matter of switching colors or size but sometimes you need to switch both color and size in order to make them bite. Also, the side sweeping type hook set is the best way to set a hook while using a jerkbait.
