Sorry if this should be posted elsewhere but I had my new boat winterized and when I went to install the cranking and deep cycle battery, I noticed they taped wires together but not sure if they are correct.

They put both my outboard motor and my trolling motor wires together as if they both belong on my cranking battery and all the accesories to my deep cycle battery.

Does this make sense? is it because my alternator will charge the cranking battery? I have a 2010 Bass Tracker with a 50 HP merc.

Hello Everyone.

I have a 2010 Bass Tracker that I had winterized last year. I went to put the batteries back in and noticed that they taped my outboard wires and my trolling motor wires as to indicate that they both run off of the cranking battery and the other wires for all my accesories to the deep cycle battery.

Does this sound correct? I was thinking that the only thing I should wire to my cranking battery is my outboard and everything else to the deep cycle.

Then I thought well maybe it is correct since my alternator should re-charge my cranking battery, so I could technically go longer between charges.

I do not have a switch to go between batteries.

Appreciate any advice.

this is pretty much mandatory if you want your batteries to function correctly and have a full life.

I personally don't think the accessories matter too much unless you use them a lot. They wont drain a battery enough to matter. I have my accessories on my cranking battery, but like i said i barely use the accessories so they could go on either battery.

You don't put accessories on a TM battery. That should stand alone. Accessories like your depthfinders should go on your cranking battery because the motor is fullt grounded and if there is any interference, it would be less than if you put the DF's on the TM battery. Why would they tape the wires together? It has nothing to do with winterizing your boat. Why not ask the people who winterized it?

I am the second owner so I dont know if they were correct to begin with. Thats why I haven't asked the guy who winterized it.

Make sure everything is fused properly or is on circuit breakers.

Make sure all connections are clean and shinny when you connect them, i,e. battery post, battery cable connectors, TM connectors, Accessory terminals, etc. And it's very important to insure all connections are tight, you don't want any sparks in that compartment

sounds like you need to fin a new mechanic
