Intestinal Virus Warning (South Florida)

Featured Replies

My gf said her Co workers bro got sick from an initial scrape. He was fishing off Sr 84, near signature grand. The city tested the water and it was contaminated according to my gf. She works in the medical field so I trust what she says more than just hearsay. Just a heads up.

Contaminated water in S. Florida? Get the F outta here, really?

From a scrape? was he swimming in the water?

I do alot of walking in the swamps and there are indeed some parasites in there. I have gotten a few infestions over the years. My hand swole so bad one week that I could not close it. I like neosporin for all scrapes and ******. S. Florida is a breeding ground germs and viruses.

Diluted bleach 25% is what one of those crazy Florida alligator guys pours on open wounds immediately, says he has not had infection issues since. Saw it on Discovery Channel. I think though the CANCER may get him in the end.

Exactly what I was thinking. There's all kind of weird stuff floating around in the canals down here.

this is frikin nuts .. i believe its in all our water (germs an viruses etc.) cause just walking threw mud with shoes or none waterproof boots on something will get under your skin i had experience like that... it stayed in my foot for atleats 2months i burned it used a hot needle nothing worked until i used a knife to cut top layer skin off...

When I was a teenager in 70's south Florida, I tried to jump across a narrow canal along Holmberg Road in Parkland... barefoot. I made it, but my right foot landed on some coral rock and I tore open the skin on the bottom and side of my heel. I used neosporin and peroxide, but it got infected anyways. The doctor had to use a scalpel to scrape the infection and some tissue away before it healed. Plus antibiotics.

The canal/swamp water is definitely unhealthy.

I never get why people still get into that water...you'd think that between gators and viruses people would figure out not to. :Idea3:

It may be an extreme, but I never advise anyone to eat fish caught in most of the smaller water in Florida. In my neck of the woods most of the lakes and ponds are fed through a drainage pipe and most of the fish aren't very pleasant on your digestive track.

I caught the crabs once but that had nothing to do with the water.

Did you catch them at the Tiki Bar? :love8:

It was involving a hog but not the kind we fish for ;)

Did you eat'er or throw'er back?

I grew up on the C-100 canal that runs through palmetto bay/pinecrest. Used to go fishing and swimming in it OFTEN as a youngster. Every now and then if water from the canal got up your nose it was a guarantee youd have a little bit of a sore throat the next day. Other than that im still alive but questioning what the heck my parents were thinking letting me swim in that canal at the time! lol
