Erie Angler

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm a newbie to this site and am anxious to pick the brains of you Great Lakes smallmouth anglers. I live about 45 minutes from eastern Lake Erie(Dunkirk, NY) and have enjoyed catching smallies in the spring. With this year's early spring I ought to be out there now! LOL!

Late last fall I upgraded from a 16' Lund Explorer (30 horse Honda) to an 18.5' Lund Gran Tyee (135 Merc and 9.9 Merc kicker) primarily to let me get out on the main lake for summer walleye and to reach those bass spots I couldn't get to before. But I also plan to hit those mid-summer smallmouth haunts after the water temps reach the 70s and fish get into their mid-summer patterns. I am most interested in hearing what you guys use for bass in any of the Great Lakes but especially Erie. I do quite well on large hand-tied marabou jigs in the spring in the harbors/bays (have had a few 30-40 fish/day) but want to devote some serious time to other techniques like drop-shotting for summer fish.

Specifically, what drop-shot setup (rod and reel) would you guys suggest? I'm looking at a St. Croix Mojo bass rod (MBS70MF) and maybe a Flueger Supreme 9235XT reel. Thoughts and other suggestions?

Also, what are some good stickbaits/plastics and techniques you guys use?

Thanks,

Bob
