Tubes And Algee

Featured Replies

Is there a rig or set up where i could still drag a tube jig but not get any algae on it.

I fish on lake erie in the summer and the amount of algae makes it really annoying.

I know its not the answer you were looking for but I know a lot of guys weapon number 2 on erie is a drop shot....it would drag the weight thru the algae still but your bait would be out of it....maybe time to switch the tool for the job??? I'm not sure how else dude sorry

When I am fishing a tube in that kind of stuff I rig it weedless with a bell sinker inside or weedless like in the pic. Every once in a while I have to snap it to get it free of clinging stuff.

You can try a weedless tube rigging vs. open hook. There are several manufacturers that offer these "inside tube weights". Here is what they look like:

I believe Cabelas and BPS both sell these internal weights. However, why not use the drop shot? You can control the depth the tube is working much better than dragging on the bottom. Especially if the grass and garbage is still affecting your presentation.

I use these and it works great for weeds but not algae, you need to use the drop shot. It isn't hard, and you can use a tube. Just tie a palomar not but use enough line that you leave at least an 8" tag end and attach your weight, not you are using the tube but the weight is actually in the algae instead of the tube.

Drop shot is the #1 tool on Erie for me. Keeps the snot and the gobies off your bait. You can use whatever plastic you like.

Come to think of it, I wonder how the Jika Rig would function in this kind of environment? I still think the drop shot is the way to go. :)
