Jigs are a great bait all around. Jigs can be flipped into heavy cover, drug across open water, and fished at any depth you want to swimming them. The most common colors for jigs would probably be a brown or black/blue. When working a jig you can give it big hops back to the boat, shake the jig, drag one across the bottom, little hops, or swim it. For flipping it seems most effective flipping it into cover letting it sit, give a little shake, give it another shake then pulling it out if you don't get bite. Usually 12-30 pound test will be used when fishing jigs either braid, mono, or fluorocarbon: I prefer braid. A stout rod will be needed to get good hooksets with the single hook. To improve your jig out of the box trim the skirt so its equal with the bottom of the hook, and trim the weedguard. Fish will often times just peck the bait so always be ready to set the hook. Hope this helps!

On trimming the weedguard.  Different makers of jigs means not all weedguards are same in stiffness, angle or length.  Trimming the guard entails removing some of the fibers by wiggling them till they break back at the jig head.  More importantly, I spread the fibres in an arc before fishing it.  That way if it falls on its side, less chance to hang up and better deflection off wood, reeds, rocks etc.  Before you start removing weedguard fibers fish it some and see if you miss bites.

Wow! There must be a zillion articles on this website discussing jigs. Read 'em all!  If you still have some specific question, maybe someone in the forum can answer it, but the library here is EXTENSIVE.
