The McDonalds around me have changed the $1 Double cheeseburger to a $1 McDouble. The difference is that the McDouble only has one slice of cheese. Still good and when I eat at McDonald's I get 2 McDoubles and a medium choc shake. The grease tastes great, but I typically don't feel so well after eating it!!!

I doubt that the split shot will matter, but if you are always going to use a split shot then you should just buy a heavier jig. You need to use lure weights that are in line with the rod that you are using. I'm guessing that you're rod is too heavy, plus as others have said that light of a bait is difficult to cast on a typical baitcast combo.

The only time that I use chatterbaits is at night. Also bring jitterbugs for topwater. And, plastics work just as well at night as they do during they day. Color is irrelevant.

RW, Thanks for the info. I also know that you use some of GMAN's jigs. I just talked to him and he's pouring me some 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 round jig heads on a 3/0 mustad hook. He said that he could also do a 2/0. If I found the jighead that you're talking about (here) You may want to see if GMAN will make you some too. $3.79 for 5 from BPS!!! For as fast as I went through jigheads on the few times I've been on the river I'd be broke in a hurry!

I'd only keep a record fish. If I wanted a mount I'd get a replica.

Today's hooks will not rust fast enough to make a difference. If the hook is blocking the bass's throat then it will die well before the hook has rusted away.

What type of jigheads do you use with these? I'm just getting into river smallie fishing and am having a hard time finding something that I like for this type of fishing.

I fish GMAN's jigs (a member here). Favorite trailers are Net Bait and Rage Tail products.

Take a look at the runoff that flows into the pond. Does a creek or stream flow through it? Is it a farm pond? If nothing raises any red flags, then it's likely ok to eat the fish out of it. The next thing to do is to determine who else fishes the pond and if anyone else is taking fish. If not, then you can likely take anything that you want without harming the fishery.

You're probably setting the hook too soon. If you set the hook as soon as you see the fish hit it then you're probably pulling the bait away from him. You have to give him a second to get it fully in his mouth and then slam it home.

I don't worry about it. I mainly fish with greens and browns. If a certain "shade" of green or brown is on sale, then I buy that one. Fingerling bass are probably another significant forage item.
