  1. I'm going to take a drive down to Corpus from Wisconsin in a couple of weeks. Never been there before but it sounds like there's some good fishing around Rockport. I'm taking rods and reels but no boat. Anyone got suggestion on what and where to fish?
  2. just tried to order from Cabelas online - got this Yo-Zuri 275-Yard Hybrid Ultra Soft Line - Green Item number:IJ - 119277 $7.99 POUND TEST: 6# This item is on backorder. Cabela's estimates it will take 6-7 weeks to ship this product.
  3. I just checked the Yozuri website and they still list Gander as well as Cabelas as retailers - along with some others in my area. Here in adsion, Wis. they just closed the two Ganders and opened a new one just outside the city because Madison bans hand gun sales. The old stores had Yozuri lines but the new one (just opened a couple of weeks ago) does not. Even the sales clerks were surprised it was gone when I asked where it was. The two Cabelas in Wisconsin are quite a ways from Madison and no one else in town seems to carry it anymore. I guess I'll check the online sources. Anyone know where I can get it online? Cabelas, I presume, anyone else?
  4. I'm near Madison and can walk to Lake Mendota (I usually take the truck if I'm launching the boat ). The ice is just coming off so I'll probably get the boat out next week but won't be thinking bass for a while (you know when the season opens). I fish Lake Wisconsin regularly and had a boat up in Door county for years (Ephraim). The small mouth fishing there is crazy - I'd get up around 6 and catch a few before breakfast right at the marina. I'm retiring this month and plan to try some new areas. So if you have any tips for the LaCrosse area I'd be interested.
  5. Interesting - So when a rod is rated for, say, 1/8 - 5/8 oz baits, what are they assuming? If I want a balanced rig it seems I need to pay attention to the actual weight of the terminal tackle.
  6. I was kinda bored this weekend so I decided to mark the weights of my new spring spinnerbaits on the blades. Just for grins I got out my digital scale that I use for measuring powder charges for rifle bullets I reload. The scale is very accurate but reads out in grains. 1 ounce = 437.5 grains. I weighed the folowing right out of the manufacturers packaging. 3/16 Booyah 140 gr (approx. 5/16 oz) 1/8 Strike King Mini King 104 gr. (approx. 1/4 oz.) 1/8 Stanley Small Fry 161gr (almost 3/8 oz.) I did a couple of jigs as well 1/2 oz Outkast R.T 287gr. (over 5/8 oz.) 1/4 oz. Outkast Pro Staff 201 gr. (over 7/16 oz.) I had no idea there was that much variations. What are they weighing?
  7. I usually fish with my son who is a lefty and I'm right handed. I run a tiller in the back and trolling up front. We have electronics in the front and back with side by side transducers so we're seeing essentially the same thing. Neither one of particularly likes to screw around with boat control but I usually end up in the front because then neither of us is competing for the real estate over the boat while casting. Since I fish saltwater a bit I like to use a push pole even when fishing slop 'up nort' so I take the back. But we don't change position on the water since we both go 230 and 6'2" in a 14' boat. If you get stuck in the back and you don't like what the front is doing - fire up the main and trump that dude!
  8. I have a book that says not to use a Palomar on less than 20Lb test line. Anybody else heard of that?
  9. I have both casting and spinning models of the Ocean Master travel rods. These are 7' 3 piece rods. They come with a nice rod case which is about 30" and fits nicely into my duffle with wheels. I use the casting outfit with a Diawa Costal inshore reel more often because it is smaller to pack than the spinning outfit. I am very pleased with both, however.

  11. I been ready some posts about Bull Shoals/Ozarks/etc. to get a drift on when things start happening in this neck of the woods. I live in South central Wisconsin and it's not unheard of to have snow on opening day in May. So I'm thinking about a drive south in April/May to do some fishing. I can get to Memphis from here in about 9 hours (without the blizzard), so it looked like I could get to Bull Shoals area in a day. Alot of the post say that April is tough so should I be looking further south at this time of year?
  12. I'm new to the forum so please tell me if I'm following the right protocols. Thanks. I've search the forums for "SOL" and read the resulting posts. I've also search the Diawa and bps sites and do not find how to buy spare spools. Can someone suggest a source? Thanks.
