Myself and a friend want to fish for 3 or 4 days and numbers and a few big fish are the key. We are looking for a full service guide with us bringing our own equipment. e are looking at March or April but not limited to that. Reasonable prices and friendly staff a must. This will be our first trip to mexico so any info would be great.

Keep in mind that they fish different lakes. Most of us fish the same lake or lakes in the same region. KISS may depend on the specific lake.

Jig fishing guys; Winter question for you
GMAN don't leave out the dead grass areas. They detach from the bottom and provide some great off shore structure just like a brush pile or rock pile. I have caught some of my best fish off dead suspending grass mats. Fish right next or in them and the bass use it for cover to ambush the bait.

K.I.S.S.
I found a old copy of BASS and was amazed at what I read. They have a million articles on a million ways to fish the latest and thegreatest baits but the largest major of winners in the Classic and there other tournies fished the same baits. Over 85% were won on a jig or a soft palstic bait either T Rigged or C Rigged. That should tell you something.

K.I.S.S.
I am sure everone knows what this stands for but just in case it stands for keep it simple stupid. I had a conversation with Glenn yesterday and made me wonder how many people subscribe to that method of fishing. I am one that feels like most fisherman over complicate fishing and it's really not that hard. I can catch fish on the same baits pretty much 12 months out of the year and though they may be fished differently I can catch fish most of the times just fishing simple.(Fluke,Jig,Shakyhead)I know that other baits work well at different times of the year like topwaters in spring and crankbaits in the fall which I fish. How do you fish....

fast or extra fast?
I know this has not been talked about yet so let e say this. It depends on the maker of the rod. There is no industry standard as far as power ratings so I may use a G Loomis that has a extra fast rating that is actually more limber and slower than a fast in a St Croix. More on the subject Moderate for trebele cranks,jerks....fast for topwater like gunfish and sammy. The rod seems to rebound faster and make the bait work with easy and extra fast for jigs, t rigs, shaky heads and eightless flukes. The one exception is traps. I like a moderate crankin rod for open water and a extra fast if I am rippin grass.

Jig fishing guys; Winter question for you
First let me say there is some great information here. I fsh a jig 12 months out of the year and give it alot of soak time from October till March. If the truth be told it's my #1 winter bait for big fish. I use both 3/8 and 1/2 jigs. The weight more depends on depth of water more than fall speed. Key #1 is keeping it on or close to the bottom and getting it there quick. Being that I get very few bites if any on the fall I just want it to get there. Under 12 feet of water 3'8 gets the nod anything deeper I use the 1/2. I like a bulky jig and use only the Buckeye Mop jig with super chunk. Remember there are feeding up for the hard part of winter and are looking for a big meal not a snack. Once it is on the bottom it is a drag until I hit something thanI may hop it an bang into that piece of grass, rock or wood, The bite may be different from day to day and fish to fish. Just pay attention. Sometimes they will knock slack in the line others just move off with it. The main thing is I work it on slack line in case the fish is on there and I feel somehing different. Most of my fish in the winter come in more than 15 feet of water so I use Gamma Floro so there is no stretch. I also do some trimmng on my weed gaurd and take a pair of needle nose and open the bend of te hook a small amount. I also use a extra heavy 7''1" rod so I can wack um. My hook up percentage is much better with combo that using Mono and a MH heavy rod. Hope some of this makes sense.

CLOUDY FISHING
This time of year I throw white or bone color baits for jerkbaits and crankbaits in clear water. Blue Glimmer skirts with silver blades also if the water is clear. If there is some stain I will go school bus yellow with brown or black back, sexy shad or craw patterns on cranks and jerks. Spinnerbaits sexy shad skirt. Jigs are brwon ,brown and brown. The chrome/gold comes out when the sun shines.

Your favorite Jerkbait???
Yep...My chrome is GONE but it still catches fish. I will have her ready in the AM for some jerkbait action.
-
Your favorite Jerkbait???
It's hard to beat many of the baits that have been listed. My personal favorite is a TD Minnow SP in the yellow spot color. I catch a bunck=h of fish on the jerkbait in all types of condition. Very effective during schooling times in the summer and in the winter for fish that are suspending.

what kind of jig
I like to use a Buckeye Mop jig (square living rubber) for 95% of my jig fishing. Brown or Green Pumpkin and a Super Chunk in Green Pumpkin. Great in grass and around rocks. IMO one of the best all around jigs made.
-
WINTER TIME BAITS
These are the baits that I will use all winter long. #1 Buckeye 1/2 Brown Jig w/ super chunk #2 Weightless Fluke #3 #5 Shad Rap #4 Buckeye Su Spin Blade/Fluke #5 TD Minnow
-
Spinnerbait rod??
I think I heard that they either have or will have a GLX model of this same rod. How cool is that.
-
G Loomis Shakey Head Rod
This needs to be moved to The Rod section....sorry I got happy fingers.
-
Spinnerbait rod??
I like my G Loomis 812 6'9" Med Xfast spinnerbait rod. I can throw a small to med large spinnerbait and iit is amazing with a buzzbait. Soft but lots of power.
-
Plastic or wood crankbaits????
I only throw a crankbait in the fall and winter when the water gets less than 55 degrees. I feel like the fish are looking for a more subtle bait this time of year which I have found is better in a wood bait.In the spring and and summer when the water is above 55 I feel there are better choices on the Hill so I keep the cranks in the box. I use Shad Raps, Circut Breakers,Suddeth Little Earls and a few custom flat baits . I like baits that are without a rattle this time of year for the same reason. The times I will use a palstic crankbait with rattle is in muddy water and when using a lippless crank.
-
Snaps???
I don't use snaps and that is because the lake I fish has alot of grass and it seems that the snaps I have used in the past are grass catchers only. IMO

G Loomis Shakey Head Rod
I was wondering if anyone has used the Med MAg 6'10" rod. I bought one on here and have not fished it yet. It seems a bit weak but maybe I am missing something. I was using a shimano crucial up till now. 6'8"Med Xfast that seemed alot stiffer than the Loomis. I love the feel just wanted some thoughts from a user. Thanks in advance.

Lake Norman ???
I am heading up there from Augusta Ga. in 2 weeks for a family vacation and I am looking for some help on patterns, baits and some ideas for fishing this lake. Since my wife said the Ranger can go with us I plan on spending some time on the water. Thanks for any help.

If you could only use one bait?
Fluke....but it was a hard choice because I love throwing a Spot Remover.
