  1. VT...ONE of MANY good schools in VA
  2. yea its 5 bucks to launch from a trailer, i was catching them fishing relatively slow most of the good ones came off main lake points, caught a couple fishing faster with money minnow type swimbait sold at dicks reaction innovations maybe? forget who makes it. the fishings good now i was hoping to find some spawning as some are spawning on some of the local ponds i fish but its way too muddy to even attempt to site fish there.
  3. went out today on the occ and landed over 20 fish best day i've had there in a while probably 8 or 9 keepers, most of the nice ones came in the morning all up river so don't think its slow up there anymore if it was.
  4. Can't find anything requiring the safety course, although does sound like a great idea don't have the time for it. I guess i need a Chesapeake bay fishing license to fish the Potomac down there? Am i right on that or should my va license be all i need.
  5. hmmm where'd yo u get that list of things i need? I just went to walmart today and picked up a bunch of stuff since my buddy got a ticket today on the reservoir. I just went off what was listed at VDGIFs website here: http://www.dgif.state.va.us/boating/wog/equipment-regulations.asp#REQUIRED_EQUIPMENT According to that i don't need the bilge pump or flair gun although the flair gun is recommended.
  6. we definitely had to be careful today had my buddy looking out front for me and luckily didn't hit anything too hard (hit one submerged piece that we couldn't see but i wasn't going to fast at the time). Theres a lot of crap floating around out there though lost kayaks, paddle boats, trees, docks, everything that floats so be careful but you should be fine, my boats not fast enough for anything to really sneak up on me. there were two guys in a big pontoon boat type deal with a smaller boat with two teenagers in there cleaning up everything so hopefully they'll get most of the stuff and the rest will find a place on shore. How long you guys think it'll take for it to settle down and the water go back to normal clarity etc?
  7. fished the reservoir today went down towards the dam in the morning which was a mistake then decided to run up river at around 1 (I was at the dam) and ran up a little past fountainhead on that next s turn, nada. its crazy what the reservoir looks like now there are coves that are pretty much unrecognizable. i tried cranking points in the morning then through a white spinner at every piece of structure i saw, then decided i needed to slow down since the water temp has dropped way down (didn't have my fishfinder hooked up but i'd guess it at 55) and still got nothing so i dunno hopefully it'll settle down and the bite will turn back on by your tournament.
  8. how can some of these guys get there boats so fast? i get that i have an 8 hp so i wont do what all them with a 9.9 have but i'm just wondering if some of these guys are running 15 with 9.9 stickers? also i saw a guy put in somewhere down towards the d**n some private neighborhood launch with what looked like a 40 could have just been me but it was definitely not a small outboard. game warden give people a hard time if they suspect your running a bigger motor? (buddys got a 15 we'd love to use there but have been afraid to)
  9. I check the T-results on their website after every tournament usually just to see what the bites like on the reservoir when i'm away and i've seen bags up to 25 lbs there. grant it thats a 6 fish limit thats still over 4 lbs average for fish (that was the biggest i've ever seen though) usually first has around 19 it seems think strykal fishes them though wait for his reply. I would fish them but I'd feel like i was just donating money to the pot as the biggest bag i've been able to put together there was 15 which wouldn't do anything for me at those tournaments normally.
  10. Alright so I was talking to my buddy the other day and he said he was fishing a federation tournament in which one guy brought three 6 pounders back from the same creek on the Potomac. This creek is an hour and 45 minutes by car but if I were to put my Jon boat in on the other side of the potomac it's about a 9 mile run to the creek and with my jon boat running 15 mph which i'm pretty sure it does i could get there in 36 minutes which even with the 45 minutes from my house to get to this launch would be shorter by a 25 minutes shorter each way than driving (plus wouldn't have to deal with traffic). Anyhow if it was a nice day out would I not be too crazy to make that run? And do I need any additional safety equipment in myboat to avoid getting a ticket than I would if I were just on my smaller lake body of waters?
  11. Hey heading back up from school wednesday, any bass still spawning on the reservoir? fished claytor lake down here at tech thursday and friday and got my first taste of bed fishing, was hoping i could get into some back at home, but judging by the water temperatures being 60-63 at the last fountainhead tournament on april 20th i'm worried it'll be or already is over. let me know what i can expect thanks. tight lines
  12. Recently fished my new fenwick elite tech "strokin' special" which is just a 7' 2 jig MH jig rod and can say enough about the rod. Worth every dollar of the 200$ price sticker. Within my first 10 casts down in alabama prefishing a collegiate tournament it helped me land a 23 inch bass (only went for 5 and a half pounds) flawlessly. I had never used a fenwick rod before but can honestly say this rod has quickly climbed the ladder to one of if not my favorite rod list (the rest of my rods are st. croix avids) so just figured I'd let people know about these new elite techs since i've noticed theres not to many reviews of them out there yet. tight lines.
  13. can't speak for the spinning elite techs but i have two elite tech casting rods (strokin' special which is a jig rod and target spinner bait) and love them both although the jig rod felt a little heavy at first its the most sensative rod i've ever fished with, and well you'll have to check out the spinnerbait for yourself its really something else
  14. great news thank you it will save me some weight and speed.
  15. I already have an older 36# thrust trolling motor running off of this battery and will be installing one fishfinder and one combo unit on the boat. Will I be able to run all three off the same battery for a day of fishing? I only use the TM to go around spots (have a bigger 8 hp motor on my jon boat to get from spot to spot). If not can I run the two fishfinder units off a smaller battery. The thing is weigh is a huge issue for me with my 8hp i dont want my jon boat to be too much slower and batteries weight a lot.
  16. did you guys find any beds down there? i talked to some Georgia bulldog boys who said they were fishing beds on Friday, but i never saw one bed all weekend. i figured since one of the fish i caught on Friday had a really red tail maybe most of them were in post spawn already? that was definitely tougher fishing than i had in mind. good seeing y'all down there see some of you out Wilson if i can make it down for it. tight lines -mike (vt fishing team) any you guys pull some striper out? i thought i had a nice bass on Saturday only to pull up a striper.
  17. just an update on the topic i started with my own review of the revos after a weekend down in alabama using them. i fished the revo s all weekend and liked it a lot to be honest real smooth and powerful (pulled a five and a half pounder on probably the 5th cast i made with it out of some grass like a champ). as far as comparing it to another my partner was using an sx and complained because the line guide on it (part on worm gear that the line actually threads through into first guide, dont know the name of the part) kept coming out of the real and down his line which bothered him to know in and he was ready to throw it into the water after a while. but that really did sound like a problem in his specific reel and doubt its common to the whole sx line, other than that i think he was happy with it. i'd definitely recommend the revo s after this weekend. tight lines
  18. thanks thats exactly what i was looking for my thumbs still isn't all that educated so i definitely do need a little help from the breaks. tight lines and go hokies never forget.
  19. i'll be there along with three other guys from tech as far as i know wouldn't be surprised if another boat decided to head down. see ya down there should be a good time
  20. I've got a friend who works for purefishing (company who owns abu garcia, fenwick, berkely etc.) who confirmed the review on another site that the s cast further let me quote his explanation "As a matter of fact, many people prefer the S over any of the other reels due to the centrifugal brake. The SX and STX are equipped with magnetic brakes, which often become more difficult and thus less efficient to fish with." This confirmed what was said at another site "I too mase the comparison between the Revo models and arrived at same opinion as expressed here that the S model casts / pitched better with greater distance. Good news was I did this before I purchased." The general conclusion seems to be its because of the specific break systems the s can cast further than the rest. But that's all besides the point I was hoping there would be some people with some personal experience with the S as well as the SX and/or STX that could provide an overall comparative evaluation.
  21. I recently purchased a Revo S based off of reviews on another site that it in fact casts further than both the sx and stx. But there is more to a reel than casting distance. I have not yet thrown my revo s, but plan to this weekend on Lake Weiss and Guntersville but was wondering what experiences with the Revos other people have had specifically compared against other reels within the Revo lineup. Thanks in advance and tight lines hope everyone is excited for the spawn.
  22. thanks for the info its good to see another hokie here, gobble gobble
  23. could i drop a jon boat in there at the end of mt hope road? and anywhere to leave my trailer and jeep while i'm fishing? thanks. tight lines
  24. hey guys I was wondering if there was a place i could launch my jon boat. I had taken a lap walk around the lake last year and didn't see anything, walked that one road but just looked like a maintenance road and the gate at the front of it was locked off. I guess a canoe or kayak is the only boat you can fish out of at mercer?
  25. Sorry for the double post but I was wondering if anyone has any info on Lake Weiss in Alabama, I'll be fishing a collegiate tournament there this weekend and have never fished in Alabama ever. (Going to Guntersville for fun the day after the tournament should be a good trip to say the least) wish me luck, and as always tight lines.
