  9. The next meeting of the Potomac River Smallmouth Club (PRSC) is on Wednesday, September 24, starting at 7:30 PM at the Vienna Fire Station on Center Street in Vienna VA. The special guest speaker is none other than Al Lindner! During a long career spanning the most revolutionary years in sportfishing history, Al Lindner ranks among the most renowned leaders in the fishing industry. He continues to fish avidly for all freshwater fish, averaging about 180 days a year on the water, and is hailed as one of the world's best all-around anglers. As the host of Lindner's Angling Edge and Fishing Edge television series, Al remains immensely popular as one of the best-recognized angling authorities in North America. Al, however, has always worn many hats, and even his most avid fans may not realize the extent of his past and present involvement with all aspects of the fishing business. Other than finding new and better ways to catch fish, that is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of the PRSC members won a contest for the rights to have Al come in to town and talk to the club members. How cool is that?? clapping.gif So, if you are a club member, you get to come to the meeting early but you MUST let me know if you are coming so we can get an accurate head count!! Here is the schedule: 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM- "social hour", pictures, autographs, glad-handing etc. with PRSC members. 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM- PRSC members dinner with Al 7:30 PM- Lindner speaks until 9:45 PM (open to the public) If you want to become a PRSC member, there is a special price of $45 for the balance of this year plus next year. Normal membership is $35 a year. For membership, call the PRSC President, John Lipetz , at 703-609-8083. See you at the Fire Hall! Ernie
  10. I'm not sure there is "fall striper run" but there are some stripers in the river at this time...mostly schoolies.
  11. You need to pick your days if you are going to launch at Gravelly with a jon boat/trolling motor combo and fish the Potomac and WC. As VolFan said, you can fish the rip rap on the VA side and some bridge pilings but the boat waves will rock you! I know there is a ramp up the Anacostia but I don't know where. Good luck! Ernie
  12. Go see the Brian & Colby Trow at Mossy Creek in H-burg. They can show you the loot. Basically there is trout & pan fishing fishing using 2-3-4 wt rods, bass fishing using 5-6-7-8 wt rods and then the big stuff for salt (9 through 14 wts). That class will teach you a ton! I like medium priced rods from: St. Croix (Legends, Avids) Reddington (CPS) Scott (S2) Diamondback (Aeroflex) Orvis (TLS, T3 etc) Of course, Sage, Winston & Loomis are top shelf. A friend of mine likes Powell and March Brown and they can be picked up at a nice price from Sierra Trading. But there is so much more..... Spend money on the rod and skimp on the reel....IF you are going for smaller fish (non salt). Once you go to big fish and salt, you need a good reel too. You will find out that most reels for fly fishing are nothing more than line holders as one brings in a fish using the line. Of course there are may that will tell you to get the fish "on the reel" but that's another story. Ernie
  13. Incredible....taking fly fishing as a college course! But be careful, fly fishing is addictive and EXPENSIVE! Ernie
  14. I trust the jon boat has a motor (gas)? If so, great ramp and no problems for you regardless of the tide. Shoot straight accross the Potomac and go around Haines Point and you will be at the mouth of the WC and Anacostia. Stay left and you are in the WC. Watch for big boats as you cross but there will be less of 'em now since it's after Labor Day. What is your target? Ernie
  15. Andrew, I hear you on the big boats. If this plan ever comes to bear, we can always take my 21' CC and drag or carry the yaks to the shallow water. Ernie
  16. rondef, Thanks! I will ask about the tracking. I know that Odenkirk is VERY interested in these guys. I hear you about strong tackle. We plan on using 9 or 10 wt salt water fly rods....have caught 30 lb stripers with them! Ernie
  17. Hey Andrew! I do not have experiance with snakeheads....yet. A couple of us have been talking about using our kayaks to hunt them down...using a fly rod! I'm not sure if this will happen soon but it's in the works! Ernie
