  1. Insurance is usually cheaper if you "bundle" your home, auto/truck, boat and whatever with one company, or through one agent. The agent may be more important than the company. A reputable, independent agent will know where and how to save you money. In addition, they know which companies are best at paying claims and which are, ahem, shall we say, reluctant to pay claims. An independent agent wants and needs your business. A company might prefer losing your business, if they can get out of paying a claim that will more than offset any premiums you are likely to pay in the future. Since an agent doesn't pay claims, their priority is retaining you as a customer so they get their commission, ergo, your satisfaction is of the utmost priority. Not so with the companies.
  2. What he said. I might be able to appropriate one from work here if you can wait. No cost. Already have one. Not for 15 dollars though. Close to forty with the MA sales tax added. It's not just a simple adapter. It comes with a mini disc to install the necessary drivers. Choose from Mac, Linux, or Windows. I'm kicking myself for not getting the small Humminbird side imaging unit for the bow, rather than the 728, or anything else that takes a card. Live and learn.
  3. Could be the plugs. Could be the gasoline. Today's gasoline goes bad in a short time, even with the fuel stabilizers added. Change the plugs. Try fresh fuel and see what happens. I have a lawnmower that will not start in the spring even though I use Stabil in the fuel. Drain the gasoline, put in fresh fuel and it will start on the first pull. For better advice from those in the know, what make, year and horsepower is the outboard?
  4. My 898 is a breeze to update. Plug a chip in the computer, download the update to the chip, plug the chip into the 898 and turn in on. When it starts, it will detect the update and ask if you want to install it. Select yes, then enter, and voila. These are obviously old cables they've had around for some time. They give instructions for Windows ME, XP and Vista. Nothing about Windows 7. And, about that "adapter", with tax, it was forty bucks at Best Buy. It comes with a mini disc to install the correct drivers for your operating system, be it Mac, Linux or Windows. It's never "smart" to aggravate your customers. Hurts the bottom line far more than it benefits.
  5. I was correct. Those computers do have USB ports. By the way, you might think about vacuuming the dust from the cooling openings.
  6. I have the same issue with my Glucose meter - a state of the art meter, BTW. The cable for the computer is a 1/8" jack to serial. Then I have the seriel to USB adapter. Stupid, I know. At least my insulin pump is wireless USB, LOL. That's what bugs me. I'm not really into computers, but everything that hooks up to the computer other than the chip readers, monitors, and the audio plugs into USB ports. Keyboards, wireless adapters/antennae, the mouse, printers, unless they are wireless, all hook up to USB ports. It would be good PR for Humminbird to provide a USB adapter with the AS PC2 accessory. Surely I cannot be the only person who finds this offensive. Maybe I'm turning into an old grouch.
  7. I have four, and none of them have that port. Not on the back, and not behind the door on the front where there are other connectors. I'll bet the computers you are looking at have USB ports.
  8. I may be able to buy one for fifteen bucks, but that's beside the point. I shouldn't have to. I already spend 35 bucks for the connector. It should not cost fifty bucks for a connector to update the unit. Rather short sighted of Humminbird to produce such a thing. The cord should come with a USB plug, period.
  9. In addition to my 898 side imaging unit, I also have a Humminbird 728 for the bow of my boat. To update the unit the accessory AS PC2 adapter cord is needed to hook it up to the computer. And therein lies the rub. The end that hooks up to the computer has a nine pin, female plug. I have four computers, three desktops and one laptop. The laptop and one of the desktops are brand new. None of the computers has the nine pin serial port. I call Humminbird. They tell me I will need a nine pin to the USB adapter, forty five bucks plus ten for shipping. That's a total of eighty bucks for a cable to update the unit. Why not produce the cord with a USB plug? All my computers (HP) have plenty of USB ports. It is nothing short of outrageous to produce such an item, and to have to spend eighty bucks to update a less than three hundred dollar unit.
  10. The entire world is all about making money.Common business practice. We live and die trying to make money. It's not gonna get better, but much worst. The world is only going to get greedier. Sorry, but I don't fall into that category. It may be the way you live, but not me. Those who live for the almighty buck are inevitably disappointed. As far as the world getting greedier, I don't think so. It's not getting any more or less greedy. It is the same. The only difference is that instant, worldwide communication only makes it more evident. I was taught a different code of ethics by my parents, thank goodness.
  11. I say, goodbye and good riddance. I gave up on professional stick and ball sports when they had the "substitute season" NFL back in the eighties. Both sides are crybabies, whining about how tough they have it. If pro football is so hazardous, and it is, then do something else. Too bad that they have to make a lifetime of earnings in four or five years. Unrealistic and outrageous salaries, profits and venues only increase ticket prices to the fans. At some point they will be hit with reality. See NASCAR. If you are a diehard football, baseball etc., you have my sympathy. I feel badly for the fans, but have nothing but disgust for the owners and the players. The owners, paying outrageous salaries to even mediocre players are as much to blame for this sorry state of affairs. Both sides need a serious dose of reality. As long as tv ratings are high, and the stadiums are full nothing will change. The above opinion comes from one who lived and died with the NY Giants from the 1950s until the year the NFL played the season with substitute players. Neither the players nor the owners give a d**n about the fans, despite their words to the contrary.
  12. A primary difference between the premium and the platinum chips is that the platinum chips can show you a 3D image. http://www.fugawi.com/web/images/products/fugawi_navionics_platinum_plus_3D_1_hr.gif
  13. Dedication, determination, desperation.
  14. Did you miss the "Fishing Flea Market" section of this forum? It's just above the "Everything Else" section when you open the Forum Home.
  15. Ribeye steak, baked potato, greenbeans. Home made apple pie with a scoop of ice cream. All the Coke I can drink. A cheeseball and crackers for an appetizer.
  16. The ram is an excellent mount. My one bit of advice would be to go larger on the mount. Overkill is better than too small. I got the biggest possible to mount my 898. It stays put, whether trailering at 75 - 80 mph or chattering over rough water. You can mount a Ram on a horizontal, vertlcal or anywhere in between surface.
  17. All the "house parties" I know of are affilitated with a single company, such as Tupperware, or Pampered Chef etc. Some guys like Strike King, others Zoom, others Berkeley others, horror of horrors Yamamoto. Same with rods and reels. The logistics of such an undertaking would be a nightmare. Way too many brands and types of baits, gear, etc, to skinny it down to a house party thingy.
  18. There must be reviews online which compare the two. If it's like all the other ask the members questions, some will say one. Some will say the other. It all boils down to which you prefer. I have the Navionics Hot Maps Premium chips for the east and south, and have no complaints about them. So far, the HD maps are right on when it comes to boat position. The others can be way off. I've been a hundred feet from the shore and the display shows the boat on a roadway adjacent to the pond, an error of over a hundred yards. It's no big deal as long as you don't try to navigate by the display. When you mark a spot on the gps, it will bring you back to that precise spot repeatedly. I suspect that is common in either program/chip.
  19. Old farts need a license in Massachusetts, but it's free for residents 70 or older. Discounted rates start at 65. Get mine at the town hall. Only five minutes away.
  20. Sounds like a Kevin Trudeau wannabe.
  21. Wait 'til you're sixty-nine. You'll get excited when you have a pulse.
  22. Somehow, that sounds incestuous.
  23. As my birthday gift to "Burleyman" I'll say this for him. I hate these threads, and the morons that start them.
  24. Sounds good to me. I'll have to get an RI license. Easy enough to do online. I can be there in less than ten minutes from my house. Ever fished Devol Pond? It's surrounded by private property. No license needed. I'm hoping to start fishing it by mid March. The past two years have seen good jig fishing. Not big numbers, three to four per hour on a good day, but averaging over two pounds per.
