How does KVD do it???
This is true. It also goes on in the PWT Food For Thought: How many of you guys think if given the privliged opportunities that many of the pros have had, you could compete? Not to discredit any of these guys as they are all atheletes. If you came from money and were able to afford to fish as a living could you compete? If you had professional fishing contacts could you compete? If you were givin a boat, electronics, rods, reels, baits, could you compete? I don't know KVD's history but he was born and raised around fishing/watersports. He was able to make contacts at a young age. Alot of these things have alot to do with the success these guys have. I have to work a regular job for a living to support my life. In turn I am unable to become "the greatest bass fisherman that ever lived". I cannot fish 40+hours a week and although I love to fish don't know if I would be able to or want to fish that much. I am good at the job I do and every day I learn more about the job I do. If I fished 40hrs a week I'd be willing to bet that I would learn something new every day which would make me a better fisherman. I had the opportunity to see Iconelli give a seminar last year. I was amazed at the thinking process that goes on inside his head. Things I never had even thought of. Mike has learned all of what he knows by being on the water all the time. KVD spoke after the classic at the press conference and again, he has learned what he knows by being on the water ALL the time. KVD is an exceptional fisherman, as Tiger is to golf, as Jordan was to basketball, as I am to being a refrigeration mechanic . The Federation guys did a pretty d**n good job of competing while living out of their trucks. One guy in particular Dale Hightower was pulling his boat with an AC/Refrigeration work truck. So I would say yes..

Help Me Pick An All-in-One Rod
7'6" MH Veritas. Fishes more like a H and has a nice tip for throwing frogs.. $99
-
what do you like in a frog rod
I'm using a 7'6 MH 65# braid for frogs b/c I like to really get them out there and cover more water. I have a 7'3" H 65# Braid I use for punching Most of my pitching plastics is done with a 7'3" MH 17# Flouro For Jigs /C-rigs I have a 7'6" MH spooled with 20#flouro All Veritas Someone told me a long time ago on here that I would one day replace all of my 6'6" with 7 footers and I argued that but they were right. Once you get used to fishing with the longer rods you will never go back. I do still have one 6'6" I use for light spinnerbaits.

How does KVD do it???
He referenced that in the press conference after the weigh-in. As far as I know, nothing says you can't use something like that but I think it pushes the boundaries a little bit. At what point do you draw the line? I'm not taking anything away from him - he's unreal on the water and clearly operates on a different level. I think Jeff Kriet was fishing with one as welll and he didn't fare nearly as well. While we were waiting to blast off Sunday Kreit was next to us telling Duckett about the hydrowave deal. He said KVD is the only one using it so far that the one KVD has is actually a prtotype that Kreit gave him. The way Kreit sounded the one KVD was using was the only one made so he was fishing without it.

Marshalled for Boyd Duckett
That is the biggest think I got out of the experience. They really work an area over and give it time.. Just because they are not biting does not mean they are not there. He would not quit on an area until he covered the entire area completly. We went almost the whole first hour without a bite then wham all of a sudden he hooks up with a 9lber.. It was quite an experience! I'm still pumped about it.

Favorite Chatterbait Brand?
The action of the original and the vibration is hard to match. They have a patten on connecting the blade directly to the head. Some people are complaining about the thin blade but this is one of the reasons it puts off the vibration it does..I've caught them on Vibrashocks as well.

All I can tell you is what he told me. Maybe it was BS but he seemed like a pretty honest dude..

Marshalled for Boyd Duckett
Boyd found that hump in practice but they were not quite pulling up on it yet. The hump he wacked them on was not a migration route to the area where KVD was although it was further east in the lake a little closer to deeper water. The hump itself was a place for them to lock down and spawn and they did not start pulling up there until Sunday. The area KVD and the bunch was fishing is more of a migration or transition area that the fish come in through to get to the very shallow west end of the lake. Some drop right there and spawn around stumps and some keep heading further west and spawn on the shell flats and banks on the west side of the lake so they were in an area where they could hit spawners and transition fish at the same time. I do not think many of them knew about the hump Boyd was fishing. It was only 40 yards or so wide and stepped up to 1.5 ft from 3-4 ft and was solid rock/clam shell bottom. Hope this answers your question..

The H20 Express square bills are pretty dang close to these also.

Duckett Rods
I spent a lot of time with Boyd Sunday as I was his marshall for the classic. We talked a bit about the e21 deal and he said they were basically trying to sell a $100 rod for $169 and he wanted no part in that. His rods sell for $159 but has the blank and components to warrant the price including the micro guides. He told me he is using the same blank that kistler uses on their z bones..I witnessed his rods hold up to a 5 fish 28lb 15oz limit..

Classic winning lure
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for posting this. Reading this yesterday gave me the idea to fish a chatterbait today and I got my new PB LMB - 9.06. Details are in the Fishing Trip forum. 8-) Awesome! The chatterbait is a big fish lure for sure any very versatile..

Classic winning lure
What color and trailer did he have on his chatterbait(s)? Inquiring minds want to know. 8-) Boyd produced a serious bag as well. Green Pumpkin with a watermelon red lake fork magic shad trailer.. If I was Boyd Duckett I would be p!ssed at you right about now. Especially since he came out and said his big fish came on that Berkley bait. Way to ruin advertising. lol Did he really say that? I missed the weigh in..

Brandon Palaniuk / Gerald Swindle / Aaron Martens
If Boyd would have started in Cato from the first day he could have won the tournament. He only fished it the final day and the pattern he was on dominated what everyone else was doing and the area he was fishing was a good ways away from the KVD/martins/Remitz/Palanuik/Rook bunch. He found something special Sunday for sure...

Product Pushing: Way Too Much
Boyd thinks the havoc pit boss designed by skeet is the real deal and I beleive it after him showing me what is does in the water vs a Beaver. Its basically a beaver with way more action. He said he is not crazy about the idea that Skeet designed it and not him but its a killer bait. He prefished in Venice using a Beaver and the pit boss and the pit boss out performed 3:1. This dude is prob one the most honest pros when it comes to baits. He pretty much said Berkley has too many useless baits and they are just now starting to really let the pros design the baits such as the chigger craw and they are moving in the right direction now.

kvd's lures at classic
The first day he threw primarily a 3/8 Spinnerbait. 2nd and 3rd day he was throwing a rattling 1.5 chart/black back banging it off stumps. I still cannot beleive what I witnessed over the course of three days. For the most part all the anglers in the tank pond were throwing some brand of square bills with the exception of Boyd who I was with, he was throwing a chatter bait with a Lake Fork magic shad trailer. he was working it more like a jig though just using the blade to get there attention..

Marshalled for Boyd Duckett
To be honest they spend alot less time changing baits than we do. Boyd threw two baits all day a chatterbait which he caught 90% of his fish on of the 29 lb bag he posted and a couple on a laser lure square bill. He threw a crawfish colored trap a short while and hooked up with a 4 lb fish with it. I think the most important thing I learned is how to really work an area over and give it time. He worked one area all day, we would go 40 minutes without a bite but when he did it was a pig. Square bills were the winning ticket this year in the tank pond for sure..Found a nice little shell hump that I did not know about either..

Classic winning lure
Trust me it was not the bait...location and technique plain and simple..I was with Boyd today and he was throwing a laser lure square bill, Brandon P was throwing a spro and im not sure what arron martins was throwing but they were all on fish. Boyd caught 90% of his fish today on a chatterbait!

Marshalled for Boyd Duckett
What an experience esp being we were fishing in my back yard. Pretty humbling to see what these guys are capable of. I knew my home lake was good but these last 3 days have been nothing short of amazing! here is a pic of the big fish of the tourney I took with my cell phone. Boyd is a hell of a guy! Those rods are the real deal he uses the same blank as the Kistler z bone but a fraction of the cost. What an experience esp being we were fishing in my back yard. Cold Water Punching?
Funny you say that, a friend of mine in our club and I were having this conversation yesterday and that is his punching bait of choice also. I will pick some up on my way home today. Ive always wanted to try them anyways. Junebug is one of my favorites, I've done well with it in muddy/stained and clean water. Thanks fir the tip..

Cold Water Punching?
Would you use a craw (with the legs attached for less action) , a Beaver, or a paca craw with a glass rattle? Will be doing alot of this for our tourney this weekend but I cannot decide which bait to start with. Most of my punching has been done in the summer and I use some sort of craw with a lot of action. The sun will be high and bright sat and I found some areas with plenty grass and lilies and believe this will be a productive pattern. I will be punching some stained and clear water so will be switching colors from black/blue to watermelon/red.
