  1. Nothing wrong with the sienna for part time use. I would want a more rugged reel for steady saltwater everyday fishing, 10, 20 and 30# ocean fish will take it's toll on budget priced gear even if it's saltwater approved. Catching 2# blue runners isn't the same as 30# stripers. I wasn't familiar with rod so I looked it up, not being a fan of split grips this one isn't bad at all, much like mine with an ample butt and foregrip and IMO not a negative issue. I really don't like making recommendations, lets just call this a suggestion to consider, a Shimano spheros 4000, this is real workhorse reel that's built to take it. Some of the previously mentioned reels are going to be a bit smoother, but in durable and fish handling in my mind will fall short.
  2. When I first moved to Delray there were no peacocks behind my home, a year later I caught a few small ones for the entire season. Year after that the peacocks almost rivaled the LMB in numbers caught and started to get some size too. Over the last year or so I've caught peas in Delray maybe 4 miles from where I live, just a matter of time until they are in my backyard again.
  3. I cut the leader off and loosen the drag when I'm done fishing, put it the rod rack when I get home. Each outing starts with a fresh leader and knots.
  4. I forget to add this to my post earlier and only meant as 1 person's opinion. Quite often I read Alan Hawk's reviews on saltwater spinning reels, the most comprehensive reviews I've come across. Most of the reels reviewed are completely broke down and examined for quality along with pictures, and usually fished with before posting remarks. The site is always in transition as new products become available, the reviews are on the bottom of the page. http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/lists.html
  5. This is exactly what you said. without the mention of a private lake. Had you mentioned the Kingfisher Society in the first place I would have had a better idea of what your concept of a country club is. After viewing their website the Kingfisher Society does not appear to be a country club in the true sense of what a country club is. It does appear to be a wonderful "refuge" as described on their site to entertain clients or a great vacation. Price doesn't seem to be over the top, not much different than a trip to an ocean fishing destination with lodging and charter. Without a doubt a market for this type of adventure for a select clientele.
  6. A lot of good choices. Battles are popular and very durable and not a bad pick, in the Penn line up I like the spinfisher. I use a variety of different brands in saltwater, can't say I have major complaint with any of them or a favorite. As of late I've downsized and have been using my tierra 3000 15# braid, 20# leader on 8' med rod for snook, bonita, and barracuda, does everything I need a reel to do, being as it's your money this is not a recommendation. For a 4000 reel I could think of half dozen choices that I'd like. Hook a 30 pounder and it comes down to you not the reel, AND DON'T USE BACKING..................LOL.
  7. Alberto is one of the more popular knots used, it's easy to tie and as strong as a bimini twist. Sometimes you have to experiment to get the right number of wraps for the diameter of lines being used, mine is usually 7 or 8 and 2.
  8. I think I mentioned this before, the EL Rio canal in Boca which isn't far. Public access at Pioneer Park off Dixie Hwy in Deerfield, best fished at high outgoing tide, bass, snook, jacks and tarpon, I've caught all those species there. I'd work my way up towards the FAU campus.
  9. Both lake St Clair and the Detroit River are public waterways, besides day use public ramps there are marinas that offer a country club atmosphere that are private membership. Our first membership was at Great Lakes Yacht club, in the earlier days there were a variety of boats, sailing, pleasure craft and fishermen, as the club grew the focus was sailing. We then moved down to Kean's Marina on the river, offering similar amenities on a smaller scale. I would call these places country clubs on the water, private access on public water. Kean's had many fishermen with it's close proximity to Lake St Clair. Whether it be on land or sea, a "country club" is a place to do one's activity that offers other amenities as well, with a membership fee and dues. I can understand the confusion as some may view private access to pay purely for the pleasure of fishing, targeting a specific clientele. To say "Country club fishing.....it's coming. There's definitely a market for it." Perhaps fishing camp would be a more suitable term than country club. Roland Martin's Marina isn't too far from that concept.
  10. They have been here for decades, better known as marinas. Marinas cater to the storage and dockage of boats From fairly inexpensive to some that offer more than a boat slip, amenities like a golf country club with clubhouse, grille, and social activities. Have yet to see a marina with a "proshop" using the river mill plan, which really sounds like a great idea, generally a store where ice, bait, snacks, drinks and some basic marine supplies are available. There are a lot of required expenses that go with a country club, initiation fee, monthly dues, assessments and food purchases, can't say for sure but some of the top line marinas may have some of the same requirements. For me having a boat on Lake St Clair was just not a boat slip, being there was a lifestyle as well. After a day of fishing sometimes the kids came down and we went out for an evening sail or took the boat and docked it at restaurant for dinner. I think something might be doable with the right planning, on the right body of water for the fisherman that want to tow their boat to that location and still be able to fish other places as well. That said country club members play the majority of golf at their own club. Where I think the difficulty may lay is having enough members to be profitable. Too many members could be a madhouse at the ramps and that may not be desirable considering paying an annual membership. I'm sure there are developers out there that can come up with the right concept to make it fly, I like the idea.
  11. One of the things I don't understand about bass fishing, even though I've been doing it for 60 years, are broken knots and lines. Believe me it's just not bass fishing, it happen with all species. I don't care what knots are being used, if tied correctly and checked for wear they don't break too often. Saying a knot never fails is absolute, things do happen on occasion, sometimes within our control and sometimes out of it. I've been catching bonita the last few days on med spinning, I have not retied my leader to line knot or my knot to my duolock, but it's checked often, for the most part knot and line failure is negligence.
  12. Bought for my grandson who never used it. $30 bubble pack Shakespeare size 30 reel, spooled up with pieces of 15# braid laying around, mounted on a Daiwa med rod closeout for $25. I only use this combo for jigs and bottom fishing, has caught more 6-10# bass than anything else I have. Guess 25 bucks is all I need to spend to "feel" them swimming by.
  13. Wishing Jewish members a happy Rosh Hashanah, year number 5768.
  14. We have seen some but not a lot of mullet, the run hopefully should start around the end of the month. It's more than just mullet, lots of white baits start showing up too, a fish a cast is not unheard of then. Cobia are awsome, great fight and great eating, squid on a feather is a good ticket for them.
  15. I spooled up a couple of reels with 10# PPslick, so far I like it. Casted well and the few windknots I had just pulled right thru. A handful of 5# bass is not my measure of testing line, I'll be spooling an inshore set up and that will give me some very good feedback.
  16. The last couple of days have been out of the norm, bonita have been coming in close to shore. My sling jig has been working magic catching fish around 10#, great fun on medium spinning gear.
  17. Feeling a fish swim by is probably attributed more to hallucination than sensitivity.
  18. Not an easy answer. I just got a personal message from a very well respected BR member telling me that bass in my area have been caught up to 10 lb, I'm not surprised as I've done it the same places. The answer is no I would't pay as it's already available to me for free. I would pay for species that are not common to my area, whether it be a guide or some type of a retreat, baramundi comes to mind.
  19. I can catch fish anyway, catching them is easy as long as they are cooperating, the days when they don't can get pretty long and frustrating. I'm going to pick a top water popper over anything, it's just the most fun for me.
  20. I use nothing but spinning gear but I do not marry myself to one brand. Shimanos are very good but so are many other brands each of them have positives and negatives. I'm looking for comfort on my combination, drag performance, and line capacity for the particular sized reel. IMO distance is coming from the rod I'm using and the type of lure, sling jigs are very hot now and they flat out catch fish. With their heavy weight and thin profile they really cut thru the air, my casts are probably twice as far as with a traditional lure. I'm not using anything less than a 3000 reel, some brands in that size do spool considerably more line, they are getting more consideration.
  21. If I could keep only one of my set ups the choice is an easy one to make. All purpose means to me all the different places I fish and all the different species. Freshwater from bank, beaches, jetties sea walls and the flats, a 7'6 med 8/17 with a 4000 reel with 15# braided line. This combo has been doing it for me for the last 6 or 7 years, light baits to well over an ounce with a variety of lure types, fish from bluegill to tarpon, at times it feels like I'm fishing too heavy.
  22. The cost of fishing can add up however the money is spent. A $17. lure may last a long time and catch a lot of fish, by the same token it may last 1 cast with no fish. I just bought a few waxwings, probably my limit, not expecting longevity, lots of teeth here.
  23. I mounted a 6' long 1"x 4" horizontally, spaced hook eyes and hang about 15 rounds.
  24. I don't care to fish that spillway, much rather fish off the beach.
  25. I like what I use, been handling 20# + fish for 8 years on it and own 6 of them, but always willing to try something different.
