  1. There are mangroves and some muttons around pier pylons, squid, shrimp and live glass minnows. Rougher water brings them in, not too many keepers close in, offshore mangroves can be 10#.
  2. It may be only a mono thing, he doesn't fish braid.
  3. ^^ 100% ^^ In fact less control on BR, every member can see all posts. The subject matter is limitless on FB, it's one stop shopping for as many interests as one may have. You can even have your own group, set your own policy and have the group open or be selective on who can join. When push comes to shove, both FB and BR are social media, they are pretty much the same.
  4. My question is.............When do you catch fish? My adage for fishing is this and only this.........When the fish are "on" I'm going to catch them on about anything and when they're off, it's long day. I don't read anymore into it, I'm going fishing anyway.
  5. Some times yes and sometimes no. This scenario is extremely common, twice in the last couple of weeks I had snook busting bait all over the place, without a single strike. This has happened to me dozens of times, often this can be the hardest time to catch them as so they are so busy inhaling live bait. It's so frustrating, but it's the nature of the beast, you just learn to accept it.
  6. I obey the law, I don't concern myself. If they want to check let them do so and that's the end of it, I have nothing to hide.
  7. I would not judge a fishing spot by the production you are getting this time of year, it all changes once the weather starts cooling down. I'm doing very little bass fishing except in my own community ponds, with the heat and slow bite it really isn't worth devoting too much energy, especially with the saltwater bite improving. In the general area of Gateway and Jog there are several lakes that hold nice bass, S/E corner park at the synagogue and walk across the street. Just east both across the street and adjacent to the school are good fishing lakes, parking is a problem on Saturday or Sundays you can park in front of the locked school gate. On the S/W corner at the water department that little pond holds fish too. I have caught fish at every place I've mentioned, I literally have dozens upon dozens of spots to fish between Boynton and Boca. You may want to try the canal at Caloosa park, it holds peacocks, Congress just south of Woolbright.
  8. I got a tip yesterday, I haven't tried it yet, from the greatest fisherman I ever met in my life. He's a home grown 60 year old Florida native commercial fisherman, I've yet to meet anyone that catches more and bigger fish. He told me when he gets those loops coming out instead of opening the bail and pulling the line out, he pulls the line out using the drag and he says it always untangles perfectly for him, he uses nothing but spinning gear. Even though he's saltwater commercial he invited me out for some bass fishing with him, he's been doing that since before he could walk, I'm excited about it. I make a point of never over spooling, how much line do I really need for the majority of fish I catch. I'm not too fussy about much but how line stacks on a reel is important to me, I don't want it lopsided in anyway.
  9. Braid cutters on pliers work fine in freshwater, in the salt they need to be replaced more often and for me they just haven't lasted. Mounting a cutting edge from dental floss or a PP package is really a good idea, but I don't want a clean cut. I singe my braid as to put a bead on the tip, it helps in preventing pull thru, it makes whatever knot you're using even better.
  10. I had a friend fishing Quantum lakes by the apartments saying he had caught bass 7-8 lbs there, he went there often. Yamato probably at the park west of 441, first pond with all the pads, I pulled a lot of some real nice bass there.
  11. Every one I've owned the cutters have gotten dull or nicked, price range from 30 to over a 100, I don't buy them any more. Many of the inexpensive ones have 1 cutter and a flat block, the better ones have 2 cutters. After spending hundreds of dollars, I now buy a pair at Sears with a no questions asked exchange policy, they get rusted I get a new pair for free. I just tape a lanyard on to the handle and put in into a sheath. I burn the braid with a lighter.
  12. I'm having trouble visualizing the line coming off the spool in 2 different places, unless you mean a "loop" coming of from the middle of your spool, that has happened to me. When that happens are you stripping the line out by hand until you get to the loop or tangle? Some times the line comes out clean, other times it's a bad tangle or knot, I've cut my share of line. The majority of wind knots are caused by twist in the braid then hitting the first guide at too fast a speed, slow the cast speed and don't over fill the spool. The only way to avert the loop from the middle of the spool is to make sure that the line is taut before you start you're retrieve.
  13. There isn't much in that area, the canals have better shore access. There are some ponds in the Quantum lakes area that hold some nice bass, but access is limited. Many of the places say no fishing or trespassing, but people fish them all the time, Hagen ranch rd just south of Hypoluxo, you can fish lake Charleston, no one should bother you there, nice fish there too.
  14. Drag..........
  15. Where I come from they are called council members.
  16. Even using a thin profile knot like an alberto the knot going thru the guide is apparent to me, I do not care for it. I haven't seen any evidence damage or the knot hanging up, but when using a joining knot I prefer to keep my leader short enough not to go thru the guides. Most people however tie longer leaders as not wanting to replace the leader more often, I don't mind.
  17. It's rainy season in South Florida and it rains nearly every day. Up until a few days ago there was ample water in the canals, the canals quite often are controlled due to an expected storm. Now there is very little water in my canals, I'm not really bothering fishing them. The ponds here are lowering too, despite the daily rain it cannot keep up with evaporation, but low water in ponds sometime can be a very good thing.
  18. Rods, reels and lines have evolved over the years and will keep on doing so. Artificial lures are what's actually catching the fish. 30 years ago if some one had told me a bucktail jig was the most potent lure there is I wouldn't have believed it. In 30 years of using them, no lure has exceeding my expectation more, caught more fish, more species and in more environments. A feather could quite possibly be the oldest lure known to man.
  19. This is quite true, but bear in mind saltwater anglers do not deal with heavy cover nearly as often. I say this only to lend to some credence for using b/c, I personally would never consider using one. I recently received a PM from a BR member catching a ray off a pier with 3000 spinning reel, IMO a notable feat. Was it the reel or the rod that made the catch possible? Probably the rod, as the reel held the needed 150 yds of 20# braid and the drag was ample enough to tire the fish out. I'm going to opt for a spinning set up, I haven't had a 10 pounder that ran 50 yds and have taken more than 60 seconds to pull in. B/C are popular because they are lighter and some think they can fish all day with them, I won't argue that. A spinning set up with the reel on the bottom I find to be quite comfortable. If spinning is one's choice there is set up to handle just about anything you may ever run into.
  20. In the first few seconds of the video I saw nothing but the line being used in saltwater, that just may be the target market. Braid is popular in saltwater because of manageability, line capacity, some like the lack of stretch. While I always use a leader it's not long enough to be "stretchy", I find it still to be instant feedback. The line is touted to have a stronger knot strength, not that I'm having any problems with original PP, however as many saltwater anglers do use leaders the "chain" is going to be as strong as the connecting knot to the the lure, that's going to be mono or FC. Given the fact that fish pulling out line takes a good deal of pressure off the knot tied to a swivel or direct to a leader, I don't think this is a line that I just have to try.
  21. Bass pose no real problems, I would suggest species like a bluegill that you "smoooth" the dorsal fin back so it lays flat on the body, the fins are spiny. Fish with sharp gill plates (snook and tarpon) require only a bit more care as the sharp gill is usually the uppermost one.
  22. Could not say it was a good product or not without using it first. Being primarily a saltwater fisherman using braided line the majority of time I'm not having any problem with the present knot strength, 20# braid is my most popular used. What many of us do that's a bit different than freshwater fishing is the leader strength. It's common for me to use a 30 or 40# leader with 20# braid, as long as a fish is pulling out drag the line or knot isn't likely to break, but there are times when something is hooked that's just too big to land on the gear I'm using. Not having a problem with the knot isn't the same as being able to break the lure off so you don't get spooled. Grabbing the spool will quite often break the lure at the knot or swivel, seldom losing main line. Hooking an immovable object is one of the few times when a hook may bend or break, I try to break off the lure pretty much in the same way as I would with a fish on. IMO sometimes it's best to have your knot break off, better to lose a lure than a couple of hundred yards of braid from a fish you aren't going to land any way.
  23. Forums are not public domain and are not subject to the 1 st amendment, an owner can run it as they see fit. I have dropped out of groups and forums because of restrictions of content and censorship, it may be their policy but it isn't mine. I do make an exception with BR, I like the forum and try not to swim against the current regarding certain subject matter. I totally understand the reasoning behind these policies, but they are not my favorite aspect of Bass Resource, that said I'll continue to play by the rules.
  24. ^Yep^.......... 3 rd.......It's also much easier to untangle a leader from treble hooks than braid.
  25. I think JayKumar's explanation is a good one, people like to emulate what the professionals are doing. I'm more interested in line diameter and how it manages on the gear that I'm using.
