  1. I was talking to a guy that said he catches them on chicken livers in Lake Ida. I met another guy, a claim and probably not reality, that said he caught 15 pounders in Weston, he told me where, but not knowing the exact spot I'm not driving 50 miles each way.
  2. That's a pretty one.
  3. In this day and age I believe in a college education. NOTHING is easy, sure one can find good employment in areas that don't require a degree, one has to do what their are best suited for and want to pursue. As they say success is not the finish line but the journey in getting there, being happy in a career and making a living at it is SUCCESS. Having your business offers many rewards, but not everyone can do it. It is not instant money, the pressures at times can be overwhelming, not always a steady check, other employees and their needs have to be meet, and capital investments are on going, the list of problems never end and it seems like there is a new problem daily. Just like college having your own business requires motivation and devotion, anything less.......don't do it.
  4. In all likelyhood the car needs to be repaired, the question would be is it worth the expense for a 10 year old car. I can't address another's financial situation and whether it's cost effective or not for them. I would get another estimate and I would not waste my time in trying to figure out what the parts cost unless I was going to fix it myself, which I would never do. I don't put major money into a repair unless it's a work vehicle making me money. A 10 year old car is getting close to the bottom of it's value and 1-$3000 repair is not going to make it worth that much more. A couple of grand today but what's going to be needed to repaired in a month or 2, I'd probably look at replacing the car, but ya gotta do what you can afford.
  5. Many people don't really see it going on as they are not the ones actually handling the money. Even in the private sector the highest bid does not always win, lot's of special little favors going on.
  6. I tend to favor 1 rod brand and model over all the others that I've used, but a number of different brand and reel models on them.
  7. Most of my bass fishing is probably no more than 20 yds or so for a few reasons. Shorter rods, lighter baits, and the places if fish don't require distance. Saltwater can have a wider range of distances, more variables come into play for me. Not that I actually measure but can get a good idea. If I'm waters level into the wind maybe 20 yds, wind at my back could be 40 yds. Fishing an elevated position from a jettie, into the wind I doubt that it's much more than 20 yds or so, but wind at my back, thin profile lure like a diamond jig, 8' rod, up to 100 yds wouldn't surprise me, others with 10-12' rods are casting right by me. I think some of distances are exaggerated just like some fish stripping out 50 yds of line, that's a long way and most 8# fish can't do that, unless your in free spool.
  8. I'm shocked !!! Corruption is fact of life in just about any business I can think of, as minor as giving out xmas gifts or as major as illegal payoffs.
  9. Which is better is personal choice. If one prefers spinning there is a rod and reel made to handle just about any kind of fish, almost any weight lure. This being a bass forum there is no question about b/c being more popular for heavier lures and bass fishing. I prefer spinning and that probably will never change, it's best for me.
  10. I wouldn't use a fly rod for snakeheads. At least in Florida and and the snakeheads are smaller here, these fish are caught in areas with a lot of muck and slop. You could land them on fly in open water, but pulling them out of slop could be problematic. I use a mh inshore rod and 4000 spinning reel with 20# braid and 40# leader, most people down here fish heavier than that for them. The picture of that ugly stick does not show the rear grip, the pic at first view is misleading.
  11. I always use leaders with braid, no need for me to color. Hi vis color is so you can see the line, I fish by feel and a lot of my fishing is in the dark, I can't see any color line of then.
  12. "I hope you don't owe your soul to the company store"..........lol
  13. I've fished from boats all my life since childhood, in my younger days fishing with my dad there was never an issue of casting over, he really wanted me to catch the fish. Once I was on my own I didn't always fish with my dad, I took friends along and these were fun outings, again casting over no issue. If I invited you that means you have to supply nothing but your presence, if I didn't want you with me no invitation would have been given. I don't fish tournaments but if I did my feelings are the same, let's have some fun. More than willing to fish where a co angler wants to, I want that person to enjoy themselves too. If there was fear of being casted over and not enjoying myself I wouldn't have made room in the boat in the first place.
  14. Easier to unhook fish with a single hook, a treble hooking in both top an bottom lip doesn't always come out real smooth. I use a 2/0 or 4/0, some inshore guys replace the trebles with single hooks on hard lures, you can buy them. http://yo-zuri.com/OnlineStore/Classic_Lures/Sashimi_Circlehook/details/Sashimi_Circle_Hook_Jerkbait_Suspending.html
  15. I use Mirror lures quite often, after fishing many of their models I have it whittled down to 1, a catch 2000 ( 22mr, I think) twitchbait, sometimes I use the catch jr for bass fishing.
  16. In post # 8 is the exact way to do it. This is extremely common in saltwater from pier or jettie fishermen, they hang the lures from a 5 gallon bucket and put a plano inside with terminal items, they do not carry tacklebags. This is what most of my friends do as they only fish the jettie, some only use steel and leave it on. I fish other places too so I don't use that system, I use a fanny pack and I do not fish with steel leaders. The swivel on a spoon is a good idea, many of my spoons already come with one, and come with a siwash ( single hook) in the package as well for a hook option. Killed the barracuda on 1 oz krocodiles the last 2 days and to my surprise didn't get cut off using a mono leader, usually not that lucky.
  17. I don't see any reason to go loop to loop, what's the purpose? Whether it's alberto to leader or a improved clinch or palomar to the swivel and tie a leader that's about all that's needed.
  18. If I'm reading you correctly, you want each lure to have it's own leader? I have friends that do this every single day, whether it's a mono or steel leader, this what to do. Put a swivel on at the end of your braid (mainline), attach a duolcok to that swivel. Tie a leader on to your lure and put another swivel on the end of the leader line, then attach it to the duolock.\ I might suggest working on your knots, I use that set up every day in fresh and saltwater, it should be rock solid.
  19. ^ Ain't it the truth^ Near the same age as Tom, 68 today as matter of fact, and I remember those prices. One day I'm with dad and I ordered a sandwich it was .60, he said when he was a kid is was a nickle. We had a hamburger joint like a MCD, 2 burgers fries and drink about 50 cents. There was gas station, in those days there were stations that sold name brand gas as surplus, ours sold sunoco, 12.9 regular and 14.9 premium. We used to chip in change and put a buck or 2 in the tank and drive around all night. I had a job part time stocking shelves midnights at the A & P making $2.65 an hour, full timers were putting their kids thru college and their wives were stay at home moms.
  20. It doesn't happen in freshwater with me, but it happens all the time at the ocean. On a jettie there can be quite a few people, some are just unaware of what they are doing and others don't care, I pretty much take it with a grain of salt. On the beach I don't like to be crowded, either I'm casting parallel to the shore or I have fish on that I have to run down. Couple of years ago this guy used fish real close to me, several times before I landed a nice fish he was casting over me to see if he could catch one too. This happened quite a few times until I blew up at him, glad to say he moved back to Tennessee. The sad part was this man is in the fishing hall of fame as a striper expert, he should have known better.
  21. Check the weather and tides for clothing and target species. I fish every day and it always starts at the ocean. If I'm going offshore my 3 rods and tacklebag are ready to go, no prep needed. When I'm fishing inshore my target species and location dictates the rods I'm taking, any lure I need is already in the car. Freshwater is done in the afternoons, I know the places I fish and what to take before I leave, I do carry a little bit of back up in the car in case I have to make a change. I do not take a big array of baits, I keep things very simple. Fishing everyday, I don't need any reports. I don't keep a log either, what I did last year on this very same day has little bearing on today's action. Water level may different, the amount of vegetation may not be the same, nor is the weather. If I caught a memorable fish in the past I'm never going to forget what I used to catch it and for those 20" and under no point in keeping track.
  22. Line to leader I'll use an alberto knot, strong and slim. I only tie line to leader when I'm fishing for mackerel species, otherwise for everything else I use a leader about 20" using a swivel, just make sure the swivel is big enough not to get caught in the top eyelet. Loopknots used in b/c or spinning gear are for lure connection, I double wrap the loop and it's strong enough for tarpon, snook, redfish and bass, leader size has a lot to do with the strength of the knot, I use 20 or 30# for my targets. Knots and lines don't break too often when the drag is set right.
  23. I don't fish for bluegill but I do fish for mayans and peacocks. I use a Hurricane redbone 6'6 light action with 25 supreme reel, with a crappie jig or Mepps inline spinner.
  24. Really...........? The building business, whether it be residential or commercial starts with a developer, in order to get financing the an architect's plan is usually submitted. There is so much more than just the actual building design itself but the land away from the structure too. Infrastructure is different as they are government projects, the architect's plans are absolutely vital. A lot of education is required to be one, more than just complicated designs, a knowledge of metals, materials, plumbing, electrical, a firm will employ experts in each one of these areas. The building business is about as dependent on the economy as any biz can be, welders, pipe fitters, electricians and labor in general need work that these projects supply, there can be downtime and no real security. Security may come from being the person in charge, as one can always try and solicit new business, not that it's great all the time. The pressure is enormous but the reward can be too.
