Thanks all for the information and advice. I am going to try and use a different computer and see how that goes. If I get any error codes, I will pass them on and see if I can move forward.

So, what I did was take a small Jon boat on a 1 ac farm pond and did a quick contour of the bottom. Since there is a predictive nature to the mapping, it shows depth of around 5 feet up the bank, where it is high and dry. My path that I recorded shows a pretty good representation of the shape of the pond and I wanted to print a copy of this from the sd card, clear the tracking and make another printout so that I can overlap the two and make a good representation of the pond. The reason for two steps is that all of the trails from mapping it out has all of the contour lines extremely hard to see. And I digress. So it is really neither. Which makes me think that if I took a screenshot of the map, is there a way to download that?

I am not sure. Like TN boy said I just plug it in the slot and normally it just comes up. In the top right corner there will be an sd card usually titled unknown. I click on it and whatever is on the card opens the contents. Sometimes I have to click on a file but when I do on this card, I don’t get what I recorded. Not the best description I’m sure but I am not real good with the jargon. thanks Not sure why that posted again. when you say, on a pc, do you mean like Microsoft? I have not. I do have access to one so I can give it a try. I am not up on Windows so is it plug and play or would there be a download involved?

Exactly, I have never had an issue transferring or opening an so card until now! If I remember right there was a message about not being able to read the card. It showed up like any other card I have used in the past however when I double clicked on Garmin, it gave me more boxes or files to open that were empty. I am away from my computer now but when I can, will let you know exactly what it said, if there is anything on it. I had to force eject the card for yet again, some odd reason.

I have recently moved to a farm with a one acre pond and thought it would be helpful in managing it if I knew the depth layout. I took my ice fishing setup,attached a down scanning transducer and mapped the lake. As expected, the projected depths exceeded the actual perimeter, showing depth around 5feet further up the bank than it actually is. Seeing how it was recording,I ran close enough to the bank so that I can tell the layout by the trails. Here is what I can not figure out. I am wanting to make a paper copy of the map with the trails on so that I have the outline of the pond but I have been unable to open the sd card in my Mac to do so. Is there a tutorial out there or does anyone know how I can make a paper copy of what I have on the card. Or for that matter, get the computer to recognize the card so that I can open it. thanks

That is why I love the outdoors. When I see something like this, I remind myself how lucky I am to have seen something that no one in this world saw but me. Happens all the time. An eagle grabbing a fish or 3 turtles stacked up like Yertle the turtle, doesn’t matter. If I wasn’t there to see it, no one would have ever known it happened.

Even though fishing in a dam area sounds promising, knowing the seasonal patterns of the fish you are after will make you more successful than what baits to use. And, Rick Clunn once said something like this, to better understand bass, you must learn about the prey they eat. Now without looking up exactly how he said it, his point is that the predator/prey relationship is a huge factor in successful fishing. With this said, there are sooooo many factors involved in catching fish. For instance,if the fish are spawning, they are not likely to be found in the fast water or interested in eating. Their top priority is to keep their family tree growing and slack water serves their needs during this phase. Summer through Fall, the water below a dam can be a fantastic place to fish. Here again, every cast must have a purpose. The fish will not be swimming around without purpose. In fact, they will most likely seek areas where the water is being blocked, creating an eddy or slack water. Take note as to where you cast, what the bait does upon retrieving it and if you catch one, analyze the spot. There is a reason why that fish was there. Roland Martin wrote a book probably 50 years ago called 101 Bass Fishing Secrets. This book is still relevant today for anyone wanting to learn. The information on the internet can be overwhelming so that’s why I mentioned the book. I say that it is imperative that you choose a species that you want to catch and, based on water temperature, learn what they should be doing. This should help you start getting closer to catching. Since this happened on the St. Croix, I am entering this post as Central. Last week, I was fishing on the St. Croix river in MN and having a great day of it. I was landing smallies at a very high rate and trash fish were few and far between. I did end up hooking a sheepshead around 2 1/2 lbs and rather than bring the slimmy critter into the boat, I elected to unhook it alongside the boat. When I grabbed the fish, 2/3rds of it was still in the water and as I was working at removing the bait, a 3 1/2 to 4 lb smallmouth came up and grabbed the sheepshead by the tail! Since I was fishing solo, I had no one to catch this on their phone and it didn’t stop there. This smallmouth backed off and came at the sheepshead again. This time he or she rammed it 3 times and then got between the boat and the sheepshead, staying parallel to both. At one point, I felt like I could have belly landed this fish. Then it was over. The smallmouth reacted as though I was not there. I was setting in 9’ of water when this happened. I have never seen such behavior happen,How ever I had 2 more smaller smallies flash at sheepshead in that same manner without actual contact. My feelings are that these fish may have been fry guarding and were highly aggressive. I have talked to several people about this and no one has ever experienced this behavior. I am wanting to hear from this group as to whether or not they have seen anything like this before. And, maybe have an opinion as to what is going on..

lots of good info here. I already run the new style LiFePo4, by itself, for electronics only. I have the charger that is required and I am very pleased with my set up. I was just asking the question for a better understanding. I was told by the folks at MK that if you run lithium batteries on the Ultrex, that you should stay under 80% power. I believe they meant for long runs like spot lock in a fast current. Anyway, I still have fairly new AGM's and am not really in the market. So Thank you all for the discussion, and input. Once again for the sake of knowledge, I also have been told that Yamaha does not cover warranty issues in regards to using lithium batteries as starting batteries. If worse comes to worse and one is on the water with a dead cranking battery, could you use the lithium to jump start with cables? Once again this is just for knowledge. I have the agms that I can take out of series to get it running if I needed to now. However in the future, I may run lithiums on the trolling motor so that would be all I would have. Thanks

Perfect ,I wasn't thinking about the BMS taking input from the other battery. I am not in need of new batteries, yet. I am just looking for knowledge and information on different battery arrangements. Casts, when you mentioned the push from one source to the other, with lead acid and agm, is there an issue other then drawing the more powerful battery down quicker? Would the stronger battery get overheated trying to feed the motor and the weak battery or would it just wear down sooner?

You say not to mix chemistry's, just curious but what happens if you do? I know that they charge and discharge differently and I get the logic of replacing both at the same time. But, for the sake of understanding, do you have more information as to why or better, why not? Ok that makes sense. I have heard that you really don't want a lithium to go "bad". I have been wondering, and I know that there will be many on this site who will know. If one battery in a 24 volt system, run by AGM batteries ,were to die, what would be the pros and cons of putting a lithium in as a replacement. I know about the weight, costs, and the up front pros and cons, I was wondering about compatibility issues with the two types, if any.

hey thanks for all of the great information. I do use mapping but as good as it is, sometimes its not spot on. I have always used some sort of sonar device to back up any information on the map. Just my comfort zone. I have also found that many times I have seen blips on my screen when on pad that turn out to be a small change in the bottom that ends up holding fish. Once again, something not on the map. What everyone is saying about using sonar as your only source of knowledge on the water is a given. I don't run blindly along and I also don't move around in new water until I know everything that is out there. I understand the reasons for your replies and concerns. I have been running fiberglass bass boats for over 40 years and never run aground using sonar, prior to onboard mapping. I have a transducer on the stern for detail. Just looking for options for when I am on the run.

Just purchased a g3 to fish some rivers in MN. It did not have any way of reading depth, on plane, and I have been searching for what others use in aluminum rigs. Most of what I have found seems to focus on trying to read the bottom thru an aluminum boat for structure. All I want is to be able to read the dept, at speed. I would love to have a 6" in-dash flasher like Lowerance use to make. What are people using on boats like the Tracker, Xpress and g3? I have a 9" garmin that I use to see whats down there, when I roll slowly. I need something I can read to get me there without running aground. Thanks

I have a Gen 2 Helix 12 that has started giving me false depth readings. I can be setting still or moving and it will jump to some random depth or two or three and then back to about what it should be. Makes it sorta hard to map anything when you have 60' holes on a 12' hump. Any ideas on what is causing this? The transducer is located on the back side and appears to be at the same angle when I installed it. It worked fine for the last two years now it is of no value. Thanks for any ideas on what to look for.

I just stumbled onto this thread but thought I would put this out there. You can buy several different types of lips from supply catalogs like Jann’s or Lurepartsonline. My biggest issue making cranks was cutting the lip slot correctly. I have yet figured out a way to get it done the same way every time.

I like to be able to launch at different ramps based on the wind direction and speed so I think I may head to a different lake. Even though its a bit longer, I think I may go North to the Women Lake area. There seems to be several lakes that should supply plenty of action. Thank you for the insight.

I am planning a short trip to Mille Lacs after Labor Day and was wondering if the lack of rain has brought out any navigation hazards or has it been basically unaffected ?

I have a Z man frog 2.25 that my son has been using, getting plenty of blow ups but few hook ups. I went to bend the hooks out some and when I did, the hook snapped smooth off! I have seen that there are replacement hooks for frogs that are made by some top hook companies. It seems that 3/0 and 4/0 are common and then it jumped to 6/0. Does anyone know what size I should consider to replace the broken hook? On a different note about his not hooking up, I got him a Med Hvy fast in 6'6'' because of his size. I put a 7:1 gear ratio bait caster on it with 65 lb braid and He has a pretty strong hookset. I think maybe he is waiting a tad too long so I have been working on that part of it. Any advise on the hook replacement or frog fishing in general is welcome. Thanks

I tried weeds with moss tops this afternoon but was only able to get one on a frog. Got 3 others on a homemade buzz bait on the outside edge in 5 ft of water. All 2lb plus, just no real numbers.

so, do you throw it pretty much anywhere on the water or do you target certain weeds, cover, shade or depth? Have you ever targeted isolated weed patches in deeper water? Always interested in how people use the tools of our passion.

just curious, has anyone got a frog bite going yet? Plenty of grass out there that looks prime for the frogs however seems really slow based on the water temps.
