I use a cordless drill with a long driver bit in it to unwind my old line. The line just pulls off of the bit when done. I then put the old line into a container that will not let anything get into it.

I use hula popper early morning or late even right off of the cattails or shore cover. It still works as good as it did 40 years ago.
