Lake Anna warm side this week
I had a few decent days at Lake Anna which consisted of a few firsts, first carolina rig fish, first fluke plus about another 15 or so on the fluke, and last but not least my first northern pike. Also caught them on pointers and spinnerbaits. And I went my first trip without throwing the senko at all which Im proud of myself for. I kept going back to one particular brushpile I found which was in a small cove absolutely loaded with nice size bucks. Tons of 2-3 pound bass crusing looking to spawn. I also fished points which I rarely do and enjoyed some degree of success with a carolina rig. I managed a couple that were right at or slightly over 3 but nothing huge. The big girls appear to still be in 7 feet of water at least. Here's the pike I caught. He bumped into my fluke and then I cast right back and he slammed it. I was hoping I had a 5 pounder, well I did but wrong species. I never even saw him when he hit it like I did with several of the bass. Def some good times.

fountain head
I've found that every guide I talk to is willing to tell me exactly where and how they catch quality fish free of charge. So yes you can get something for nothing Take McCotter for instance, no ego from him and he will take time to talk to you even if he know's you arent gonna book a trip with him. I rather talk to someone like him then some arrogant old tourney angler loading his boat at the ramp who thinks he's too good for anyone. Reagrdless tho, you do pretty much gotta be out there all the time and keep up with the changes I guess, no matter what info anyone gives you.

Potomac out of Leesylvania - 4/3/10
Were you fishing mattawoman creek ? If so then how far back in the creek were you ?

Equipment Review - Minn Kota Terrova with iPilot
what do they cost anyways and I'm gonna guess that a 36 volt system is a must with this. Do they come in 24 volt ? I'm still tryin to decide if I need a powerpole AND a new trolling motor, my trolling motor is a johnson that come with my stratos from the factory in 1992, it's pretty much worthless unless there is no wind or grass present. Thank goodness for modern technology.

Best waters for numbers in VA
Only problem with beatin the state record is you gotta be ready for it. You'd be lookin at around 17 pounds. I usually only have 10 or 12 pound test tied on personally unless Im throwing braid and I don't keep my net handy altho I should. I'm sure landing a 17 pounder would take a long time and the right combo of skills and equipment. I'm willing to bet when and if the record is broken it will indeed come from Briery Creek. If anyone can do it, Wayne can. Back to the original post tho, there are dozens of good spots in central va. Chickahominy can produce some pretty good numbers from everything I have read and been told. I'm lookin forward to gettin down there myself sometime in the next month or two. With so many great fisheries to pick from in VA , theres almost too many to pick from. It's like goin out to eat and seeing a dozen things on the menu you wanna try.

installing a gps
My boat came with a gps thats about 10 years old when I bought it , so I wanna install my humminbird of course and toss the old one. How hard is it to do compared to something like a car stereo? Does the fact that there is already a gps make it easier? Just follow the wires ? Is there a good how-to video online somewhere ? The one I got is a hummibird 798 pre loaded with navionics bundle package. Thanks guys

Anyone been to the Occ Rez Lately (Bull Run)?
Well I have a camper flip to pickup in lynchburg and then a brazilian bachelor party on saturday which will be interesting to say the least, so I wont be fishing on saturday. Depending on how late Im out I might not even fish sunday either I do know that me and a small group of friends are goin to my lake house the following weekend for some spawn/post spawn action on the warm side. You're more then welcome to join me if you like. None of them really fish seriously so I may have room on my boat. As for next week, I'm wide open, not too busy with work next week actually so I'm game for some potomac action assuming the water clears and warms up. In the meantime I need to either get this power pole installed or upgrade my trolling motor so this wind doesnt ruin my day. Lemme know if you have a day off and we'll make set plans.

Anyone been to the Occ Rez Lately (Bull Run)?
Well I picked my boat up today and did a test run out of leesylvania and lemme tell you, that river kicked the living crap out of me. probably the 2nd or 3rd worst conditions I have seen in my short(year) time of being on the potomac. Both hands on the wheel, white knuckles, 20+ winds, 3 foot chop+super low tide umm ya. No way Im doing that again. I didnt get a chance to fish really since my trolling motor batteries were dead. I tried drifting the mouth of mattawoman but it was a waste of time so I high tailed it back to the ramp. Keep in mind my boat is over 20 feet long and is considered a good rough water boat. But that river is no joke on days like today. I have never seen so many submerged stumps stickin out of the water. I marked a few for future reference. The water was doo doo brown and only 54 degrees. Thinkin bout hittin the pohick area tommorow, how is the clarity and temps there ? Oh and Quan, you are infact right, I have only been on the res a handful of times and every time it was fairly calm. So I'm sure I havent seen the worst it has to offer but I cannot see it being as bad as the main river even on its worst day. Those big boats on the river with 250's make for a whole lot of chop on a busy day wind or no wind. Fishing isnt supposed to be stressful, but navigating a boat seems to be unless Im on the warm side of lake anna in the winter, water like glass and no logs!

Show your ride...
so many nice rides that my old stratos isnt even worth posting. It will have to serve me until I can upgrade in a year or two. First is a new house, new vette and a new Toyota Sequoia and then I can start thinkin bout a new basscat jaguar ;D

Dan have you ever actually navigated a boat on the potomac in rough conditions ? Riding in someones boat and fishing off the back is a totally different ballgame then driving and operating the trolling motor. The potomac is no doubt the best fishery around here but sometimes it can really test my nerves esp when there is 3-4 foot white caps and 20 mph winds, add in the hundreds of crab pots, jet skis, yachts, submerged rocks and stumps, etc...It does come at a cost. The res is alot easier to deal with. Then again if everyone was on plane with 200hp outboards it would get a lil hectic on the res as well. I will say tho, alot of my fishing buddies have caught alot more 6+ pounders on the res actually then on the river. Maybe just a coincidence, but the res is packed with big bass and there is alot less water to worry about tryin to cover not to mention alot less floating logs and debris.

Anyone been to the Occ Rez Lately (Bull Run)?
wow 25 pounds is no joke esp considering how dirty the water has been lately in northern va. Too bad I cant put my stratos on plane out there or I'd be fishing there on the regular, I'm only a few minutes away from there . I wish this VA weather would make it's mind up on what season it is. This weather is so back and forth not to mention heavy rains. Kinda glad my boat has been in the shop for 2 weeks now instead of a month from now when the bite is in full force.

MARCH MADNESS
preach4bass, it may have indeed had more viewers then ever but most ppl predicted favre vs manning would have brought even more viewers and alot more money. Not saying they didnt make a fortune on advertising and merchandise , but they would have made more if Favre had been playing and that's a fact. And if you're on the outside looking in then don't even talk to me about what goes on in college sports. You have no clue. I did this for a living for a while back in the 90's, been around it since the late 80's. I'm not saying it's all fixed, but there is alot of influence.

MARCH MADNESS
I'm so sick of big market schools like Duke and Mich. State get all the calls in their favor. It's like watching a steelers or patriots game. You know that no matter how bad they play, the refs are gonna help them out. It's all abut advertising dollars to the network. Companies like Coke, Geico, Budweiser or whoever arent gonna pay as much for airtime or be viewed by as many people in a title game with the likes of Baylor, Butler , St. Mary's or Northern Iowa. Look at how much money was lost when the Vikings lost and now the NFL changed the overtime rule for that very reason. Favre vs. Manning would have made the network alot more cash then saints vs colts, it's just a fact of life. It's a reality. Having grown up with a father who is a promoter and former college/nba scout, I know what really goes on. Oh and, Kansas State fans, you have no idea how corrupt your athletic dept is btw, bunch of cheaters. Glad you guys lost! Basketball, esp highschool and college is a cutthroat dirty industry with lots of cash illegally being exchanged. Alot of it stems down to the AAU coaches and shoe companies such as Nike and Addidas paying kids, buying them vacations, cars, gold jewelery, etc... when their only 16 years old on the premise that when they turn pro, they will sign with that shoe company. Then every kid in the ghetto buys those 140 dollar chinese made shoes. It's hard for me to watch and respect the game anymore knowing how dirty and fixed alot of it is. Funny how Duke has nowhere even close to the talent of Kansas, Syracuse or Kentucky yet look at them. They got every call yesterday, end of story. Duke is like the NE Patriots of college basketball.

water moccasin stories
My girlfriend and I were standing on shore once about a year ago and she saw one swimming away from us. She dove into the water and chased it into a bush along the shoreline. She also grabbed a baby copperhead by the head back in september when she found our cat playing with it in our front yard. Babies are the deadliest becuz they spit all their venom on the first bite unlike an adult snake who only spits enough and saves the rest for more bites if needed. I actually videotaped her holding the copperhead while I chopped his head off in my kitchen. I need to figure out how to upload a video on here. She really is probably the baddest beatch you will ever encounter. And on a sidenote, I have seen her beat one of my 140 pound friends who has done some cage fighting, just to give you an idea. Granted he had about 5 beers in him, but still quite impressive. She got him into a submission and he tapped out in front of about half a dozen ppl. Her and I wrestled around one night and she tossed me and I ended up bruising several ribs which took many months to heal. She was raised on a farm, grew up fighting boys and is fearless and sometimes downright mindless. Love her to death but I hate to pi$$ her off haha

FountainHead and Burke boat rental question.
Those rentals are a ripoff if u ask me. By the time you rent 3 or 4 times you could have bought a jon boat on craigslist. I have seen tons of jons for under 300 bux lately. You can get a trolling motor for 50 bux on craigslist all day . Depending on what kinda vehicle you have, like an suv. I could easily strap a ten foot jon boat to the roof of my ford expedition if I wanted to. Also the batteries they give you are usually half charged at best when you rent. Just some food for thought, hope it helps.

Briery Creek Lake...
mid 20's ? I looked at weather.com and it says low of 30. Either way its not gonna do anyone any good for weekend fishing. This weather has been up and down in typical virginia fashion. Im hopin for some rain to wash this pollen away, my allergies are killin me right now. Lake anna seems like the most logical choice for anyone tryin to get on some big bas this weekend, they are in full spawn on the warm side.

If money were no object, which bass boat would you choose and why?
Bass Cat Jaguar

Itch to fish
I made it back down to the spot you showed me today and did catch one about 2 pounds on a spinnerbait. Didnt get any other bites tho. This was around 6-7 pm. Talked to the guy at the marina today and my boat will be ready as soon as the part gets there any day now. So I'll be back up and running soon.

Itch to fish
Gotta chance to fish with Jason yesterday for bout an hour from shore. No bites but at least I got some exercise ;D Thanks for the info NOVA Angler. Hopefully by the time I get out this weekend or so, the water will have cleared up some. All this wind and rain doesnt help much.

Itch to fish
My boat will be done soon so no worries. We'll get out there on the river asap! Oh and I went down and checked the ramps at leesylvania today and there was tons of logs washed up on the ramps and the water was brown. I dont see how anyone is catching fish out there unless the creeks are alot clearer then the main river. Guess I'll have to see for myself as soon as I get out there .

great day on the Potomac!
Very nice catch. What a great way to start off the season on the Potomac. My boat should be out of the shop by the end of this coming week, I'll be out there too. My friends have been catching dozens and dozens of 3-5 pounders in mattawoman creek this past week. I cant wait to get out there. I guess it's time to kiss Lake Anna goodbye for now.
