  1. I have never intentionally tried deadsticking........but.....there have been times when I have had a minor professional over-run and by the time I had it straightened out I had a fish on. Maybe I should try it without the over-run.....worth a shot.
  2. I saw a fly pattern that was tied similar to this but just on a bare hook.....I thought I would try and put it on a jig head. Let me know what you think and what ya might see wrong with it. Thanks
  3. Shad_Master, You can send GMAN a PM. He has a good product and pricing. Also lure parts online you can custom order jigs from them.......they have a 25 piece min. If you are just starting you may not want that many of one size jig. I would send GMAN a PM and see what he can do for ya.
  4. Don't waste your time with them. I bought some about a month ago and hate them. The best bet is to buy jigs with the weed-guards not installed and glue them in after your done painting. The problem I had with the tubes is when you pull the jigs out of the oven they are hot as hell and you have to take them off before you dip the jig. As soon as you take them off the guards will still flare a little. The real problem is when you put them back on to bake the paint back on the jig. Every jig I did the paint cracked where the tube was touching the jig head. If you must buy jigs with weed-guards installed the best way I have found is to tie the weed-guard up at the top and in the middle with thread. This will keep them from flaring out. Don't tie them too tight or they will leave an indention in the weed-guard. Then never get the oven above 250. The problem with this method is it is very time consuming and 250 degree oven will not produce the best paint finish for your jigs. Be sure to post some pics of your finished products when you get them done.
  5. Nice brown fish!!!!! Gotta Love those Hair Jigs. "Do you have hair on you jigs yet" :o
  6. I'm sure you know this but the main thing is to spend time with your son. Don't make him fish if he does not want to. Maybe he would have just as much fun riding around in the boat.....(while you scout for new places to fish). Maybe he would like another type of fishing other than bass fishing, like catfishing. Maybe he doesn't like the way you bass fish......Let me explain that..... My youngest son likes to go bass fishing but does not like deep structure fishing......he likes casting to the banks.....he is just learning to cast a bait caster an wants a target to cast too. He does not like just casting out into the middle of the lake. So when I take him we beat the banks.......He also likes bream fishing so we will do that when he wants to. My oldest likes bass fishing but would just as soon go catfishing. I have found more little humps and sand bars floating the river catfishing with him than I would ever find if I were just bass fishing all the time. I wouldn't worry too much 7 is still pretty young and holding his focus on one thing for very long could be hard.......when my boys were much younger I would take some toys in the boat with me for them to play with. I'd let them get in the water and swim when they got hot. I'd pull up on the bank and let them throw rocks (especially if someone tried to butt in to where we were fishing). You may also just have to deal with shorter trips for a few years.......three hours on the water is better than no hours on the water. Good Luck
  7. I would go now with the lake level at 410 and dropping. Scan the banks and mark spots that will likely be under water by the time you have your tournament. Be carefull there can be some treats for a lower unit and prop this time of year. If you have never been on Pickwick with the water low you would really be surprised at the small under water points (gravel bars) and stumps that are usually 5-10 ft under water during the "fishing season"........ Good Luck
  8. Sauger are starting to bite......caught 7 keepers on Dec. 23rd. Talked to some guys fishing the river with live bait for smallies but the didn't do any good.......they shut down generating at about 10:00am. Water temp was 44 then....I would bet its at least 41 or 42 by now. The next few days they are going to be pumping some good water....over 100,000 average per day. If the shad kill hasn't started I may have to try and take of Wed or Thur and go.
  9. I thought this was a great example of how deceiving a photo can be just by moving the fish away from your body. It was still a very nice fish but I think you can see that the O My God factor is lost just a little. :D I did not move or change anything on the camera just had him straighten his arm out.
  10. Oh I thought Glenn Springs was clear in deep? Lynyrdsky1, I guess I should have said standing timber.......It is fairly deep for a lake its size 35ft in places.....I just consider stumps anything that is just under the water even if it is 30 ft deep, and yes the water is very clear for a lake in this area.....up north I think they would consider it a mud hole or stained at the best.
  11. Years ago I was fishing in a night tournament. I practically made a spinner bait in the boat.....changed blades and skirt and added a trailer. Held it up and bragged about to the guy I was fishing with and told him I was about to show him how it was done.................and pitched it right over the side of the boat without tying it on. I just know an eight pounder hammered it on the way to the bottom.
  12. Welcome.......so you are the ONE that lives in Ramer.
  13. About 5 min after the deer hit the water four dogs came down to the lake right where they went in. I'm guessing that had something to do with them getting in the water in the first place. Lynyrdsky1.....yes it is idle only, with all the stumps I don't think I would do much more than that even if it wasn't.
  14. Good looking color.
  15. Got mine.........must say it is not as good as it was before Al Gore invented the Internet. But its still nice to have while clearing my mind......... A laptop is too heavy and puts my legs to sleep...... Maybe I should just get an iPad.
  16. Dwight.........I always pick up those "dummy" markers....... maybe that's why I have so many.
  17. Took my Nephew to Glenn Springs today for a short trip. He has been wanting to go fishing and this was his first trip in a boat. Little cool and breezy on the water.....so I was worried he would get cold quick and decide it was time to go not long after we got there................After about 15 min of fishing he said he was hung.....(for the 3rd time).......but this snag had fins...........I'm just glad the water temp was 41 and the fish was sluggish so that he was able to land him by himself. We also saw more deer than his brother and my son that went deer hunting today instead of fishing......
  18. If you don't want to spend much and don't have to buy from *** then I don't think you can find a better price on a swim bait than at lurepartsonline. They have the 5" Tru-Life Swimbait for 9.99. I have seen this bait for sale as much as $29. Others may know if this is an OK swim bait to start out with or not.......I have not used the hard swimbaits any just the soft plastic ones like the money minnow.
  19. Jigfishn10, The thing I really like about bearsden is that they carry or will order anything that WASPI FLY supplies.......WASPI is the main supplier of all the others. Check out WASPI FLY web page and you can see all the color options they have that places like barlow's and lure parts don't carry. WASPI will not sell to commercial tyers or individuals.....only brick and mortar stores.
  20. Went sauger fishing last weekend and the way we were fishing (slack water 15-22 ft ) made me think why not try a drop shot rig with a sauger jig for the weight instead of a drop shot weight and hook a zoom fluke or LFT Magic Shad or live minnow on the hook. Any one ever heard of this or think of a reason why this would not work.........I don't think I'd try it in a lot of current but in slack water I think it may be worth a shot.

  23. Opened my loot from Gone_Phishin today.........Thanks a ton.....If you have not given one of these big flutter spoons a try you need to...........I wish I had opened it earlier because we were catching sauger Thursday on LFT Magic Shad. Hope they are hitting them again next weekend. Thanks again Gone_Phishin.
  24. Nice fish.......44*.....sounds like time to start looking for those toothy critters. Hope to try it out Thurs.
  25. You absolutely do not have to pitch or flip a jig for it to be effective. If you fish a texas rig worm or lizard you can fish a jig. I will throw a jig almost every time I go fishing, and the lake I fish has very little in the way of cover to flip or pitch to other than floating boat docks........which I don't fish very much......Use it as a follow up or clean up bait casting to the same place you where casting whatever other lure you were using. In my opinion it is the best single bait if you are looking for that big bite. (Maybe the big swim baits are just as good I just have not fished them) Flipping and Pitching is just a technique used to cover alot of cover very fast and very accurate by putting your bait in the strike zone instead of casting past the zone and working the lure through the zone. Jigs are also not the only lure that can be pitched or flipped. You can texas rig any plastic and flip and pitch it. This time of year is a great time to vertical jig a pig and jig or jig and grub or whatever other plastic you would like to use. One technique you may want to try is shooting jigs with a spinning rig. You can do this sitting down (even though it may be easier standing). Scale your jig down to 1/4oz and shoot them under boat docks. I'm sure others will have many other ways and reasons to use a jig, but whether standing or sitting the bottom line to use a jig is to get broke off! Tie one on any size or color as long as it is 3/8oz and black and blue. You'll love it.
