Great Western Sportfishing Show
I really like it. Great bunch of guys. More than willing to help out a guy that is just starting out. This will be my only year since I'm getting reassigned to Alaska.

Why?
Not only do sites like this provide some relief from cabin fever, it gives a place to share your successes and failures. If you're like me, you may not have many friends that hunt or fish. So this gives me a place to interact with like-minded individuals.

military background?

Bowfishng?
From what I know about gar, which isn't much, I think that set up would be to light. Seems that would be good for carp. I would go with something heavier to get through their skin. I would go to a pawn shop or craigs list and look for a bow, then put something like this on it. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_101844_450003011_450000000_450003000_450-3-11

Where to begin?
I really don't have much to add as I am just a beginner as well. Just wanted to say good on ya for keeping the tradition alive with your son. I just started taking my daughter fishing this past summer. What a blast watching her fight those feisty little sunfish.

Who Taught You How to bass Fish?
Before this past year, I would fish for anything that would bite. I caught my first bass when I was about 15 on my grandma's farm pond in Missouri. But I would credit my neighbor who happens to be Fishermantony on here with teaching the most about bass fishing specifically. Can't wait to hit the water with you next year brother!

We've had single digit lows all week. Today it broke the 20's for the first time all week.

The long wait begins!
I feel you pain man. We're getting low temps in the single digits and high's in the teens. We're supposed to get a "warming trend" into the low 30's this weekend. Oh well, I still got coyote hunting to keep me busy.

Jerky Recipes!
We just made some venison jerky the other day. My wife sliced up the roasts about 1/4" thick. She used worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, onion and garlic salt, brown sugar, and some sort of spicy apple marinade. Set the oven to 200 degress and left the door cracked. It took about 3 1/2 hours. I turned the strips over about every 30-45 minutes. Turned out really good. Now I'm waiting for my summer sausage and pepperoni sticks to be ready from the processor.

First deer down!
Thanks everyone. Venison - I don't know what he weighed. I don't think he was 200 though. I'm kind of a short guy so that deer would look really big. ;D Congrats on your buck as well.

TF Downs a 7 Point Buck - Pics and Report
Way to go on your first buck! He'll be good eatin'. I tagged out yesterday on my first deer. Also a 7 point, although we call it a 4 point or 4x3. I posted the pics on another thread. Check it out.

First deer down!
It finally happened! After 5 years of trying, I tagged my first deer. My buddy and I got into our treestands shortly before shooting light. Got all set and within 5 minutes, spotted the first deer. A spike. Pretty soon we had a couple does as well. After the spike left, a fork horn arrived. I looked behind us, and spotted a buck coming in but I couldn't tell how big he was. After a bit, my buddy lets me know it was a shooter and to get ready. He was following a doe, and was grunting and snort weezing. As they came in, we thought the 2 bucks were going to fight. But they didn't. The forky came down and started feeding. Soon after, the bigger buck joined him. I had ranged this spot earlier at 12 yards, but had no shot. He then proceeded up the trail. Mu partner stood up and gave a grunt while I went to full draw. After another grunt, the deer turned broadside. I had also ranged this spot earlier on the spike at 22 yards. I settled my 20 yard pin slightly high and squeezed the trigger. After a short hiss, I heard a solid THWACK!!!! Good hit! The deer took off and stopped after 15 or 20 yards. He wobbled a bit, went down, and started thrashing. We watched as he went still. He was done and no trailing neccessary. We got out of the tree and I started jumping around. I was (and still am) so pumped. We went over to him and he was a nice little 4x3. Not a big rack, but a trophy to me. My very first deer. I'll never forget it. HUGE thanks to my pal Chris. Wouldn't have been possible without him. Enjoy the pics. I hope some of them aren't to graphic for this site.
