  1. Just got home from a couple hours fishing. I wore the Seirus gloves - the temps were around 38deg and no wind or rain. Not too bad as long as you were moving your hands - just a bit of sting from the fingertips. I was using a BC rod and after about 90 minutes the sting was getting a bit worse so I added an outer glove over the Seirus glove on my left hand (that holds the rod) to get that hand a little warmer. The cranking hand had only the Serius glove and was staying warmer due to the cranking activity.
  2. I have a feeling that after you retire you might be spending some time in Brazil/Brasil chasing peacocks! ;D

  5. That's a good point. I finally took one of my mid-80s Shakespeare Sigma spinning reels out of front-line service because the clicking from the anti-reverse pawl on the rachet was driving me nuts! I also still occasionally fish a Mitchell 408 from the 60s and it clicks too, but it's more subdued than that Shakespeare. But on all these old reels, you immediately notice the back-play that we don't have on the more modern reels.
  6. I hope to get mine in the same condition !
  7. My best day was actually from the bank - 39 bass - about half in the morning, and half in the evening. The bass were apparently on a feeding frenzy in shallow water, just before a front was coming in after a 3-4 week drought. All small fish though - 17in or smaller. Best day in the canoe was 27. Yeah - I'd like to get 400 14" or larger too ...

  10. Absolutely no impact on "bottom fishing", none whatsoever. Gotcha. I already crossed flouro off my winter buy list and wrote in Yo-Zuri.
  11. GREAT story - I love it ;D A great example of how little you actually need to catch fish, as opposed to what the Bait Monkey thinks you need...
  12. I have both. I got a Supreme for the light weight to put on a Loomis GLX spinning rod, and just got the President for general duty on a BPS spinning rod. I guess you just have to determine the value you place on the lighter weight. As J Franco said, you can't go wrong either way.
  13. Ah, to be young again and have good circulation, and no arthritis ... ;D I've got my gloves on when temps go into the 40s !
  14. Thanks guys. I'll kick it around over the winter. I had flouro on the rod I use for worms and finally had to change it out. I put mono on that rod temporarily and could immediately feel the loss of sensitivity. I have braid on 3 rigs and the sensitivity is obviously there - but I'm just not a fan. Then there's cost, flouro is pretty expensive, Yo-Zuri is much less. BUT, if Yo-Zuri floats, thats a negative as compared to flouro for bottom contact..... Decisions, decisions....
  15. That's a good thing. I was hoping that Yo-Zuri would be comparable to flouro, and MORE sensitive than mono. I was using flouro on my worm rod and am now out of that line. I need to restock over the winter and have to decide whether to go with flouro...or whether Yo-Zuri would meet my sensitivity needs.
  16. Eric and RW - what's your take on Yo-Zuri's sensitivity compared to flouro ?
  17. I shopped for a spinning reel for the same purpose. Although most wouldn't consider it a "bass-sized" reel, I ended up getting the Pflueger Supreme 8025MG -- 6.5oz. I run 20lb braid on it and have caught bass up to 19 inches - big enough to test the drag....
  18. I didn't fish them a lot, but I caught a few bass on Jitterbugs this year. It was a double rush because the bait was one of my lures that I had in the 1960s. plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop - whoosh ! Fish on !
  19. I found a Zara Spook in great condition hanging on a tree limb a few weeks ago. I'll give it a go next spring - hope I can "walk-the-dog" and nab a few fish! I love value, and a bait that cost me $0, and catches a fish, is the ultimate value ... ;D
  20. I can loose either the WalMart, or $$$ spinnerbaits with equal success! So, if I'm in risky water, I'm gonna go with the $1 bait! I lost a WalMart SB yesterday - a perfect cast, but the 20mph wind blew my line over several tree limbs so the SB is now hanging from a tree limb like a Christmas tree ornament - just my part of getting with the season... ;D wouldnt a perfect cast account for the wind? ;D Dang - at least the bait landed exactly where I wanted it! It only ended up in the tree when I tried to pull the bait over the tree limb and it hung up!! ;D ;D

  22. For me - the sum of the features of the reel have to add up to value for money - it's not just a single must-have. Aluminum frame is one thing I look for (until a better frame material is introduced in my price range), but an adequate drag (for my target fish), good braking system (or systems), and casting distance come into play. Note that I didn't mention a subjective criterion like "smoothness" (how smooth is smooth enough...). FOR ME, the idea is to get a reel that is good enough to not be limiting on fishing success, but not TOO good where value is reduced and the increased cost doesn't put fish in the boat (or on the bank) !
  23. Yep - Tims Ford is southwest of me. I have a lot of "big water" around me - Tennessee river & Watts Bar, Dale Hollow, etc. But since moving to TN, I've mostly fished my 11 local lakes (4 acres to 201 acres) since they are all within a few minutes drive of my house. I haven't taken any "fishing trips" at all, I just hop in the car and within 5 minutes I'm at one of my lakes. I may be able to get out to some of the "big water" next year !
