  4. That's what I used in the 60s, and what I spooled with over the years since then. A great mono. I still have some 4lb and 6lb Stren on reels, but it's gradually getting phased out in favor of either new-age stuff, or an alternative mono (BPS Excel!) :
  5. I'll second that motion ! On first blush, I was going to X3 this comment. Then, I thought about it and for me, Redlinerobert's stuff is just too pretty to fish. It would break my heart to start seeing the "boat rash" and "bank rash" tearing up those purty rods and reels. I KNOW that they are super duper fishable gear, but just too high-end for me... :
  6. I've received three Christmas catalogs from BPS (so far). The first and third where the same (at cursury glance), the middle one was different, with different pricing. If you're shopping, you really need to study the catalogs a bit before tossing them as the deals do change - like the PQ BC reel at $69.xx in the 1st Christmas catalog - but not the second. Then, a later catalog might have better prices than the earlier one so it pays to do a bit of homework before tossing in the trash or burning in the fireplace... :
  7. BPS has discounted the Johnny Morris Gold BC reel again - it's down to $129 (originally was $269 two years ago, then reduced to $169 for most of 2010). The other Johnny Morris models have also been heavily reduced. So, I have a feeling that BPS might be replacing that line for 2011. They had PQ BC reels down to $69, and Extreme rods at $59 in one Christmas catalog. Other than that, I haven't noticed any blow-out pricing (yet).
  8. Wow - that certainly sounds good. But still, I think I should probably keep my 2 GLX rods, and the money that I would have used for an NRX would get me half-way to getting SI sonar.... :
  9. Hmmmm - I only have two Loomis rods - and one is a GLX BSR852. I guess that might be the rod I'd keep as it is my best spinning rod, and if I could only have ONE rod - I'd rather have a medium-power spinning rod for the overall versatility than any of the BC rods that I have... :
  10. That's right for sure. For $1, you're obviously sacrificing the quality of the components. But, if you're fishing risky water, and are likely to lose the bait in a short period of time anyway, there won't be time for the bait to degrade before being lost... :
  11. Not me - everytime I look in the mirror I think: "Where did that OLD guy come from!" ;D It helps a little that I usually don't have my glasses on when looking in the bathroom mirror.... ;D ;D

  17. Oh - I admit it - no getting around it! And similar to what K_Mac said in the other thread, even if I'm not 60, I sure feel like it - especially when the arthritis and sciatic nerve are acting up ;D

  20. Like I said in the other thread - I think you have to be 60 or older to be an "old fart"...but at 58, I'd certainly like to apply for a waiver for admission... ;D

  23. I saw that post. So where does that put our pet GLX MBR842C's ? In the wood pile ?? :-?
  24. On a lighter side, at least you won't have to worry about 14' long crocs in your NY waters...but I guess you have to be concerned about all the alligators that might escape from the NYC sewer system...
  25. I considered pontoon boats. Stability and a higher seating position were positives. Negatives included, as Rhino said, the possibility of dropping stuff overboard (which for me was also a negative for kayaks), and that they're probably more wind sensitive than even a canoe. After considering the pontoons, kayaks, and canoes (and anything else that I could think of that didn't require a trailer) I ended up with a canoe (with outriggers for stability) - works for me... :
