  1. I buy whichever seems interesting at the time - sometimes that means the latest & greatest...sometimes that means a blast from the past on a reel that I didn't get on the first go-around.
  2. Those two won't wear-out in my lifetime...I'd have to put you in my will...
  3. Hey A-Jay - I'm actually gonna RETIRE at least two reels in 2015 (have to catch a couple hundred more bass on them first) so the line-up will retract a bit...................................BUT the bait monkey is already whispering in my ear about what the next three additions should be........................... Winter is a dangerous time when it comes to the bait monkey.
  4. Not me either - I still have those two NIB...but they will be in the lineup someday...
  5. Neat stuff. Lots of nice gear - check. Line on (most of the reels) - check. Some round reels included - check. BUT - labels and plastic wrap on the rod grips - BAD Brian, BAD. Peel off the labels, remove the plastic wrap, mount the reels, and get everything slimed up pronto!
  6. Between your favored reels, and your description of some key functional elements of an automotive ignition system, I think you got off the technology bus in the 1970s. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
  7. Happy New Year to all ! I did my end-of-year number crunching yesterday afternoon. My AVERAGE LMB for the 2014 season, from a total of 1559 bass, was 10.90". For the last 5 seasons, totaling 6828 bass, the average length was 11.35373352855051". I fish small neighborhood lakes, not known for being very fertile, and we do have a lot of skinny fish so I know my numbers will be smaller than most. HOWEVER, for most of the people on this thread - you obviously must be fishing close to nuclear power plants with leaking cooling systems because your "average" fish are incredibly large mutants and the entire growth cycle/survival rate of bass has been altered to produce "average" fish of varying weights from 3 to 6 pounds. Hope you wear a radiation suit while you're fishing.. Perhaps what people are thinking of is not a mathematical "average" fish (where short fish can really pull down your average length) but they are thinking of what is their most "common" size fish. In that case, these folks could create a bar chart that would show a bell curve with the top of the curve residing in the 18 to 22 inch range (which would be just incredible)...instead of a bar chart as shown below. OR...are most of the folks on this thread guessing, because they don't have the records necessary to actually calculate an average, or even determine the most "common" size fish? OR...is everyone using the "new math"? OR, does everyone actually have an average fish of 3 or more pounds in which case you have an absolutely incredible fishery. And tournament anglers - this thread will have KVD shaking in his boots. The topic was average fish and you state your winning bags, So, you went out and caught 5 bass, that weighed a total of 20-25 pounds, so your average fish was 4 to 5 pounds. You never culled a fish right? Otherwise, your "average" fish would be smaller now wouldn't it... It's been an interesting thread...
  8. So, I learned something new (Lenz's Law), found out that indeed what happens inside a reel is magic, and caught a couple bass today. To keep on-topic, the bass were caught with a reel having centrifugal brakes (one-brake on), and it is easy to adjust the braking. And to give equal time, I did have a reel with mag braking in the car but it didn't score today. It was a pretty good day...
  9. NOW it makes sense - THANKS !
  10. And Lew's doesn't even make boats...
  11. Which was the latest - the PX-R? BTW - that photo is missing three VERY important things: 1) line, 2) rods, and 3) fish..............................................
  12. Interesting stuff indeed. Reading down from the top of the thread, when I got to the part about the spool components being aluminum, including Daiwa's inductor, I paused. Then I grabbed a magnet and applied it to the cover plate that secures the captive brake shoes on a PQ spool - which I had always ASSumed was ferrous. Nope. Then came back to the computer and finished reading all the thread. Learned something new - thanks also for posting. When I was reading the theory behind the Lenz law effect, and then the mathematical formulas came into play...something in my aging brain started to shut down and I decided - time to go fishing instead... Air temp just went above 32 - no ice in the guides - time to hit some lakes...
  13. Yeah - I saw that one a while back. That's quite a bit of $$$ for an XT reel. While it IS NIB, I'd much rather have a gently used (and if you find a deal, maybe even a new) Conquest 50 for that kind of money. AND, I already have two 50XTs so don't need a third at any price... NOW - what are you doing on Japan Tackle - exploring the dark side?

That jointed Mirr-O-Lure (model 15LS) is still in production...but it looks like they aren't offering the red/white pattern any longer. This is a file photo showing most of my surviving MIrr-O-Lures - all purchased in the mid-60s. One of the tiny jointed ultra-light plugs on the bottom row was lost-in-action several years ago - I was fishing it on 4lb test line and hung it on the bottom and ended up breaking off while trying to pop it loose. Should have gone swimming for it...

Thanks Hootie. Most of my 60s baits are in great shape (not counting the Rapala and Rebel floaters which got fished quite a bit back then). Most of these "plugs" were fished a bit in the 60s, then lived in a tackle box and weren't used much after that for about 45 years. When I retired and got back into fishing big time...I fished a couple of them, lost one, then decided to sorta retire them as keepsakes. I did fish one of my 60's jointed Mirr-O-Lures earlier this year and caught a couple little bass on it. One of these days I think I will get out all my 60s baits, and fish each one (in open water with a plug knocker handy) until I catch at least one fish on them, and finally retire them for good...

Still have my Runts....need to get them wet one of these days...

Nope - don't remember. By the time I owned a Jitterbug in the mid-60s...the lips were metal (and I still fish those 60s baits from time to time). I'm only 62, a kid, don't remember that old stuff...
  18. Congrats on quitting smoking - NOW, the hard part - don't backslide... I quit on December 17th, 1986, at 7:30pm.................................................not that I remember or anything...
  19. You gotta post pics when you get it...............................................preferably with a fish next to it !
  20. I got a couple bass for Christmas - caught the one below on Christmas Eve. It was reeled in with a Daiwa Ryoga 1016H round reel................which was sorta a Christmas present to myself...................... Caught another bass on Christmas day - about 10:30 in the morning. I like getting bass for Christmas....
  21. I use the Rapala digital scales. Compact, fit in the belt pack I wear when bank fishing, accurate enough. I provided a detailed report on the accuracy performance of these scales here: Rapala Mini Digital Scale - Load Test Report
  22. Once - a lipless crank in a cove that I fish quite often. About 6 months later, I cast out another lipless crank in that cove and snagged the lost one. An Academy H2O bait in a craw pattern - I have no doubt it was mine. Cleaned the slime off the bait, changed the hooks, good to go...
  23. OK - took a couple days but the Ryoga 1016H has scored... NOW, I can give the reel the highest rating - seems to work, reels in fish...................
  24. It was already fixed in an above post... http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/40660-show-off-your-stuff/page-114#entry1663995
  25. Yes - Scorpion 200 is the JDM version of the Curado I. As John said - on-sale now at Japan Tackle..
