new boat, first time in the water
last weekend was the first time I put my new boat (1999 Viper Cobra, 125 merc) in the water. WOW I'm really amazed at the ride in 1-2 ft chop. It felt like driving a new car on a newly paved road! I put the boat thru its paces. Flat out, trimmed up, almost all my gear on board, and an empty livewell, the boat hit 57 mph. My mechanic just called me after doing some routine maintenance and a lower unit reseal, and said two of the four carbs are running lean. He said it'd be a good idea to go thru all four carbs and correct the issues with them. My questions... 1. how much performance am I losing with 2 lean running carbs? 5mph? 2. the carb job really cant wait can it? I know a lean running 2 stroke engine doesn't last very long before you burn something up. Good idea to spend the $350 now and have it done? 3. any other things to look for?

Equipment Review - Minn Kota Terrova with iPilot
You've got GPS on your Minn kota, AND on your humminbird. You can link two humminbirds... why not a trolling motor? I don't know why you cant load lakemaps, plot your course the night before, and not have to think about it at the lake. seems logical to me! Are you listening Minn kota? :-?

Doing some used boat research
X2 . Great advice. X3 I just bought a boat too. AT first, the owner said that my request was a little unusual. When I explained to him WHY I wanted have a certified mechanic check it out, he understood and allowed me to do it. Learned 2 things going thru that process... 1. The mechanic might find something the owner didn't know about... no matter how meticulously he might have taken care of the boat. 2. If the owner wont let you have the boat checked out... you don't want his boat...period. Get your own mechanic, or speak FACE TO FACE with the mechanic that checked out the boat previously. Promise you wont be sorry that you did. BTW...my mechanic found a lower unit seal issue that the previous owner didn't know about. It wasn't leaking oil, BUT there was water in the lower unit oil. owner paid for the $375 repairs. That saved me from ruining a lower unit, which costs around $3000.

New or Used??
Just went thru that myself. I went used. Very glad I did. Got a showroom condition 18ft. viper cobra. paid cash (same amount mighta covered a down payment on a new one) . If I went new, I'd be making $400-$600 per mo. payments for the next TWELVE YEARS! you dont have to think long to see the difference. I can still put $5000 into the boat on electronics and tackle and rods/reels and all kindsa stuff, AND I'll STILL be money ahead of a new one. Unless money is truly NO OBJECT.... go used.

Rage Tail Tuesday
tried it carolina rigged in the small river that goes thru my hometown. best early season action I've ever seen. smallies kill it and the lobster's larger profile seems to be getting me some larger fish. gonna try the 5/0 keel weighted hook in the heavier tree lined and blow-down areas. I think there's bigger fish in there.

My Resume
I'm just fried this semester. I just finished a 14 page paper (not-double spaced lol) for my Sociology midterm about domestic duties in "lesbigay" relationships, lol. It just doesn't get any worse than that in college. I don't want a college degree THAT bad. Is that the ONLY subject they could come up with? uurrrrmmmpppphhh (puking)

PFD Mildew Stains
steam works great. I have a Shark steam cleaner that I use on all my mildew type cleaning jobs. pretty much erases the gunk.

what size reel should i pair it with
you raise a good point, it is only a 6' rod. IMHO the Ci4 might be too light for it to balance well and I've heard it isnt as smooth as it should be for $200.

Line color
last year a buddy I were fishing for white bass using the EXACT same ultralight rod & reel, and EXACTLY the same lure (mepps zero) he had 6# flouro, I had black 4# fireline. casting into the same school of fish (we were sight fishing, u can see 'em break the surface) he caught 3 times more fish that I did. we then switched and I caught more than he did. now I'm not saying its the line... but that was the ONLY difference that day.

Johnny Morris Elite Reels
Went to BPS (Portage, IN) on sunday. had some cash burning a hole in my pocket. wanted a new crankbait setup and settled on a Johnny Morris Elite signature reel 6.4:1 . paired up with a St. Croix Premier (PGC70MMF) rod. I really like the balance of this setup. The reel's a little heavy, which moved the balance point back towards my hand. got $240 in 'em both...Cant find the Johnny Morris Elite reels on BPS's website so I dont know the reg price. what do u guys think? did I do ok?
