Welcome KVD Line & Lure Conditioner!
Hey Rob, thanks for coming on board, and thanks for the excellent write up. Been using reel magic for years. Looks like I'm gonna have to stop that. I'll be picking up some of your stuff soon. If you're going to be at G-ville for the roadtrip, make sure you stop by the pavillion Tuesday evening. I'm cooking for everybody, so you better come get some. If you insult my cookin by not showing up, I'll get your address from Glenn, and send some of my people to pay you a little visit. Get it? Got it? Good. ;D ;D ;D ;D Cheers, GK

Math
Last week I got a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me back two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help and while he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Read on... Teaching Math in 1950: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit? Teaching Math in 1960: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit? Teaching Math in 1970: A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a set "M" of money. The cardinality of set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set "M." The set "C", the cost of production, contains 20 fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a subset of set "M". Answer this question: What is the cardinality of the set "P" of profits? Teaching Math in 1980: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20. Teaching Math in 1990: By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Shimano Cumara
I drove to St Louis last Sunday for my first trip of the year to Cabela's and BPS. Had a Cumara in my hands at Cabela's. Very NICE!! I'm not in the market for any new rods just now, but if I were, one of those would be at, or near, the top of my list. I had one of Cabela's sales staff following me around for about ten minutes while I was checking out rods. I'm normally polite, but I was within a nickle of telling him to ^%$# off. I finally walked out of the store after he told me that "Shimano bought Loomis, that's a Loomis blank" refering to the Cumara I had in my hands. Anybody else heard this fairy tale?

popper line
Flouro sinks, so it's not good. Braid is too visible. That leaves mono, or a copolymer line. I like Sufix Elite.
-
Carrot Stix Grip
Now wait a minute guys. What other product can you buy,and modify without voiding the warranty? The reply to question #1 was simply a polite reply to a question that really didn't need to be asked. For #2; that's rather like asking the Colonel for his fried chicken recipe.

Old Rapala Spoons
I used to use them all the time in weeds. I don't know what happened to the ones I had. For some reason, I quit carrying them around. Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to go to the garage and see if I can locate a few.

Brake question
Over tighten your drags, and then use braided line, and set the hook hard on a log, and see what else you'll dislike about the reel..... Care to elaborate? I don't use braid, and I don't over tighten the drag on any reel. But, I'm curious about your statement.

Carp fishing- Yay or Boo!
A friend of mine (who is a real fly fishing fanatic) will try to catch them. I think he uses a fly which looks like cottonwood "fluff". What kind(s) of flies do you use? Do you use a really light tippet? I use a 6wt rod, WF line, furled leader, and 4lb test flouro tippet. Takes a good drag and lots of backing. For flies, two of my three fish caught came on a small craw imitation, the other on a size 8 wooly bugger. I started out with 8lb tippet, then 6 then 4. Got no takers until I went to the 4lb flouro. I've heard this described as "poor man's bonefishing". Pretty good description. It doesn't take long to subdue a 5lb bass on a 6wt fly rod. A bit longer than on a casting rod, but not that much. The 5lb carp I got on the fly almost spooled me. That was 90' of fly line and about 120 yards of backing stripped off on the first run. I got most of it back before he did it again. Didn't take as much the second time. Popeye, I don't know what you mean by more challenging. This is about as challenging as it gets. This is sight fishing, and you rarely get more than one cast at one fish. They're very finicky feeders and are easily spooked. I'm guesstimating that I've done this about fifty times over a ten year period. And I've caught three fish. I hooked two others who snapped the light tippet. Carp are a great sport fish, and, for some reason, are much maligned in this country. I don't get it.

Brake question
You're right in the first place, you can't. The design would make infinite adjustment possible if they had just left out the detent. That knob is the only thing I don't like about these reels.

Carp fishing- Yay or Boo!
Absolutely. If you want a real challenge, try carp on the fly rod. In clear water these are the wiliest of fish. It takes a perfect presentation to even get one to take a look, let alone bite. I've been doing this for several years, a few times each year, and I've caught three.

Jeans
Eddie Bauer. when they're on clearance, I'l buy 8 - 10 pair, or as many as they have in my size. They last forever.

Brake question
Yep, grease "em all is what I say. I put suspenders on my pet rattlesnake too. ;D ;D ;D

Brake question
I didn't want hijack an earlier thread, so here goes. I've started greasing the brake race on all my Quantum PT's. The older PT's with the three position ACS have always been a lot quieter on the cast than the newer versions, which have nine settings. I started greasing the races to get rid of the noise. What I got was a reduction in that whirring sound on the cast, and a seemingly wider range of adjustment, on the newer models. Anybody else try this? Cheers, GK

Rod for Jerkbaits
Think about the rod length before you pull the trigger. You don't want a rod too long, or you'll be slapping the water and/or the boat. If you already have a 7' rod, try the jerkbait with it. If you're slapping water or boat, go shorter until you find what works for you. Also, a shorter handle is good. A lot of rod handles are long enough to be a pain when jerkin'. Cheers, GK

Rods for less than 100 bucks and reels for less than a hundred$
I use a $100 BPS Rick Clunn rod; got it for $80 on sale. They go on sale every year. It's a 7' medium power worm/dropshot model. Not sure why they call it a worm rod. It's a lousy worm rod. The tip is way too soft to be a worm rod. But, it is a great crankbait rod. Soft tip, with good backbone, SIC guides, excellent real seet, comfortable over-sized cork grip, and a nice EVA butt cap. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_58458_100002006_100000000_100002000_100-2-6 Another $100 BPS rod that I got for $80 is a 6'9" med-light Pro XPS Finesse baitcast rod. If you want an affordable baitcast rod to throw unweighted plastics, this is the one. And I don't mean Senko's. A Senko is heavy enough to throw on just about any bass rod. I mean Flukes, unweighted tubes and worms, etc. A very light rod with SIC guides, the excellent real seet and over-sized cork grip. I paired this rod up with Johnny Morris Signature series baitcaster, and have pretty much eliminated spinning gear. Everything I used to throw with spinning gear gets thrown with this setup. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_73559_100002006_100000000_100002000_100-2-6 These are both fine $100 rods. They are both on sale every year, and are contenders in my best bang for the buck sweepstakes. Cheers, GK

Flourocarbon opinions
I don't use it exclusively, but my choice is Transition, because I can see it well. I'm color-blind, and some lines are difficult for me to see against the water. Tansition shows up nicely against the water. I've had none of the problems with this line that some others have "reported". An SD jam knot seems to work best for me, with this line. Cheers, GK

Absinthe? You guys ever try it?
Haven't had any of the "real" thing in at least ten years. Had a bud who used to make regular trips to Italy as part of his job. He'd always bring me a bottle. It was a bit easier to do before 9-11. I do have a bottle of Absente in the cabinet. it's the only legal absinthe that I'm aware of. I may be wrong about that, not being a true afficianado. It's not bad, pretty close in taste to the old stuff, if my memory serves. If anybody wants to try it, I'll bring it along on the Roadtrip. If you like licorice, or anise, you'll probably like this stuff. Me, I like Sambuca or ouzo better. Cheers, GK

Reel speed question
No dumb questions here, mon. But you will get some off the wall answers occasionally. Just part of the fun The reel with the higher ration will pick up more line with each turn of the handle. A better statistic to look at is the IPC, inches per crank. Not all reels with the same gear ration will pick up the same amount of line. The spool diameter aslo factors into this. Generally you want a slower reel for cranking, particularly for deeper cranks, and a faster one for worming. Welcome aboard. Cheers, GK

joke
In a trial, a small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know me?' She responded, 'Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.' The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?' She again replied, 'Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.' The defense attorney nearly died. The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, 'If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to the electric chair.'
