that was quite the blizzard
We got hammered last night. I had to dig my way out of my house. We got about 2 ft of snow, and the drifts are about 5 ft high.

Thoughts on rod balancing.
The weight of the reel means almost nothing as it is pretty much at the fulcrum of the rod. Changing where you hold the rod changes the fulcrum point. It's best if you think of a fishing rod as a lever. That's probably why people put coins or something at the end of their rods for better balance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever Think of the purple triangle as the point where you hold the reel.

Dobyns 705cb glass vs 705cbmf glass
The Cranking rods even with the fast tip still are still relatively "moderate". They are still soft enough to keep from ripping trebles out, but compared to the limp noodle cranking rod, they are a bit faster. They're by no means a flipping stick or anything like that. They still bend further down than a traditional fast or ex fast rod. Since switching to traditional cranking rods in the Dobyns line ups, I've had no issues with spit hooks, BUT I have experienced losing fish with faster rods like jig and worm rods. For me it's been the perfect combination because I really do not like limp rods that feel flimsy, but I was having issues with fish throwing cranks on traditional worm or spinnerbait rods. Just for reference.... The Dobyns 705CB MH Fast is MUCH different than the 705 Mag Heavy Jig and C-Rig rod. They are designed crankbait rods, just without the noodle like feeling. That's where I was confused. I assumed the Fast action crankbait rods would be more like a jig and worm rod. Thanks for the clarification.

Dobyns 705cb glass vs 705cbmf glass
I thought the Moderate actions were more about keeping the fish hooked with treble hooks. David, how many bass have thrown your cranks when they jump?

Why braid?
When I need to break off on braid I'll just wrap the line around the handle of my pliers a couple times and give a nice pull. A lot of times I will just straighten the hook or uproot whatever I'm stuck on.
-
My new setup
I love this reel and rod. You guys are right about the 20lb braid digging in. The backlashes are not a problem though. I'll have a backlash about every 30 - 40 casts, and don't have a problem fixing it. Sometimes I'll have a backlash every 3rd or 4th cast when I'm sucking at life, but it is easy to fix. I was thinking about going to 12 or 14lb mono, because some of the places I've started fishing are too clear for braid. But I like the no stretch of braid.. so maybe fluorocarbon? I don't think the fluorocarbon will be a fan of my backlashes though.

Advice needed on first baitcasting set-up
On this very site, there are a few articles about rod actions and applications. just go to Fighing Articles > Fishing Equipment Tips .... scroll down a bit and you'll see a lot of articles about choosing the right equipment. There is also some good info about fishing lines, there are things you need to know about line on a baitcaster. I can only direct you to that info, because I'm new to this myself and have avoided a lot of mistakes because of the articles on this site. I recently bought my first baitcasting set up. It's a St Croix 6'6" MH Fast tip Mojo bass trigger rod, with a 7.0:1 Johnny Morris signature series reel. They both seem to be pretty high quality pieces, but we'll see how they hold up.

My new setup
Is it weird that when I just walked past my new setup I whispered "you're so sexy" to it?

My new setup
Well... I finally gave in and got a baitcasting setup. I got a 6'6" MH st croix mojo bass trigger rod, 7.0:1 johnny morris signature reel, and 20lb power pro line. I'm going to be using it for worms, spinnerbaits, and most likely jigs.

What is Happening?
That actually makes a lot of sense matt. I would have to say that at least half the time I would set the hook. I would think I had the fish hooked good, they would swim with it and then let go. Hrmm.. kind of disappointing to think what I would've caught with the proper equipment. Well, payday is soon.. so I guess I can really justify investing into a nice setup. Thanks for the help.

Catching yesterdays fish?
I saw a video on this site with the Pond Boss, and he said that the next day after releasing fish they would be in the same spot or area they were caught in. Some of the fish in his studies would travel miles to return to where they were caught.

What is Happening?
I went fishing tonight and had about twenty good hits that I missed. I was using a 7 inch power worm, texsposed on a Gamakatsu EWG 2/0 hook and 1/8oz bullet weight. My Tackle is an old 5'2"M spinning rod with equally crappy reel, and 10lb Trilene XL. I caught a one to two pounder with that set up, but still missed quite a few bites. Then I switched to a 3/0 EWG, and still the same problem... although I caught one that was at least 19 inches on the 3/0. I say that because he was longer than my arm from my elbow to the tip of my middle finger(what a beautiful fish). Anyways, my main question is what is going wrong? Am I setting the hook improperly? Is it possibly bluegill hitting the worm? Although, some of the times I let the fish run with it when I would pull to set the hook, it would just sling shot out of the water. Any help is appreciated.

Senior pictures, with a fishing twist.
get one of those singing bass... take it off the plaque then in the picture.. dress up as a pro fisherman, and take the pic like you're holding up the bass that just won you the classic.. it might be funnier if you leave it on the plaque though

How late in the season do you fish??
i've only been seriously into fishing since the spring... so we'll see if i can keep myself together once winter hits :'( it kinda seems like everyone missed the OPs question about line... so i'll do my best to regurgitate some things i've learned from reading the articles on here. - you should use as light of a line as the situation and fishing technique permits... i.e.. abrasion resistance requirements, water clarity, how thick is the vegation? also, line diameter will affect how deep cranks dive "Another advantage of a thin diameter is that you also have less resistance in the water thus a crankbait will tend to dive deeper on retrieve than with a thicker line." - Selecting Line By Ronald F. Dodson, Ph.D. from what i've read... there is a noticeable difference between 8 and 14lb test... but at the same time it almost sounds like 8lb test isn't good enough if you keep having breakoffs.

Baitcast Reel Advice
- Baitcast Reel Advice
I "need" a baitcast reel. Through a lot of research, I've found my best option to be the BPS pro qualifier. From what I've read, they are very smooth and durable. durable being the keyword, as i fish 4 or 5 times a week. I've just started fishing seriously(for fun) this summer, so I'm really lacking in the experience department. But, I would imagine almost any reel would operate ok for a long time with proper maintenance and care. I guess my question is... am I justified in spending 100 dollars on a reel(80 when on sale) when I can learn using a 50 dollar reel? I'm just thinking with the amount of fishing I do.. do the cheaper reels have the quality of parts to stand up to the abuse?- anyone else HATE catching turtles?
i fish a smaller pond that has more than a few snapping turtles.. i've had them sit on the shore next to me and just hiss at me. also, the redear sliders are in there, and i'll usually see them dive under towards my bait. not sure if they were spooked by it though, because once i see them disappear.. i reel my lure in as quick as possible. if i do hook one, i just step on them to take the hook out. i'm 200+ lbs and have yet to injure a turtle.- Fish Behavior
awesome! thanks for the info. this made me think of mike iaconelli's "ripping" technique where you throw a crankbait into reeds and just rip it out violently(i would look up the technique before actually using it, not sure if that is exactly how it works).. I remember hearing that and not being able to understand how you're even going to catch fish in really thick reeds. anyways.. i'm off to read that pm- Fish Behavior
I stopped at cabelas last night to pick up some things for the bait monkey(didn't know who i kept buying all this stuff for until i came to these forums..), and i was watching the fish in the aquarium for a while. Now i know that bass like cover. it can be anything from lilly pads to a small stick floating in the water. But, as i was watching the bass.. i couldn't believe how tucked into cover they actually were. Some of them looked like they got wedged into the cover they were so deep. so.. it got me wondering, how many great spots on the water have i been ignoring? what i saw in that aquarium has definately opened my mind to different approaches. my main concern is though.. are they only acting this way because they're in an aquarium?- history of the site
i'm a new member and a new angler as well, and i have seen quite a few questions that could've been answered if the person read a few of the articles on this site. i just think some people aren't as resourceful as others, and some just don't want to spend the time looking for the information they need.- New video: Shaw Grigsby!
what a cool guy.. and some good tips for beginner anglers like me- 'Bass fishing bullies', or what???
i would have to say my first second and third reaction would be to tie on the biggest heaviest lure in my box and start casting directly at them and their boat. but i would then be just like the two idiots on the boat... after thinking about it, you did the right thing. i don't know if i would've been man enough to do the same.- Hi from Chicago suburbs
Hi everyone, new angler here. I've gone fishing maybe once or twice every couple of years until this summer. I went to a pond with a buddy and caught a beautiful largemouth with a spinnerbait... and now i fish almost everyday. So did i hook the bass, or did he hook me? Anyways, I'm glad to be a part of these forums, because i know it will lead to becoming a better angler. Thanks to Bassresource and its contributors for all the useful information that has already helped me out a great deal. - Baitcast Reel Advice
