  1. You say debate, I say mis-direction. You seem to want to make this a lesson in retail and marketing. Having never worked in retail I find your explanation fascinating. It is an interesting discussion, but it avoids the real question. Please answer BASSclary's (above) question.
  2. J Franco your argument does not make you a sell-out, but it does avoid the issue. This discussion is about what the right response to a mis-priced item is, not about deep discounting. The issue is whether or not it is right to KNOWINGLY take advantage of a mistake by a retailer. The direct answer to your question is simple. If there is reason to believe the price is too good, you ask the question.

They were great games. Two good teams representing their leagues well. I wasn't real happy with the 9th inning last night, but I have no illusion that beating these guys is going to be easy. There should be some fireworks in Texas. Go Cards!

I live in So. Illinios, so my perspective is very similar to Senile 1s, and I agree with his analysis. A couple of my thoughts: Regarding spinnerbaits-overcast conditions have always been best for me. Regarding Rattletraps-I have had good sucess with them in cool water, pre-spawn conditions.
  5. SirSnook the car example is interesting. If I order a car, I will very carefully inspect it to make sure it is what I ordered. I would certainly ask about any extras not ordered. If a mistake had been made by the dealer, I would not expect to pay one dime more. I would expect the dealer to provide what was paid for; if the correct car needed to be acquired to save thousands of dollars for the dealer and he provided me proper transportation in the mean time, I would wait for the right vehicle. I have bought several vehicles from my dealer. I consider him an honest, hard working business man, and I would no more take advantage of him than I would you. Gray Wolf, judgment is a completely different issue in my view. I do agree that it is easy to judge without knowing details and circumstances. Self-righteousness is not a very attractive characteristic. It is when ethics become situational that trouble starts. Doing the right thing is always the right thing.
  6. SirSnook, is your point that since there is no way of confirming here if a person’s professed beliefs and actions regarding ethical behavior are the same, there is no value in the discussion? I think there is. I believe there is an objective standard of right and wrong. I will also confess I do not always meet that standard. Condemning the standard because I fail to meet it is a rationalization I won’t make. I believe knowingly taking advantage of someone else’s mistake for financial gain is wrong. I believe an employee has an ethical obligation to represent his/her employer faithfully. I have not always met this standard, but am committed to doing my very best to do so. Whether anyone agrees with me, or believes me makes little difference. It is the interwebz after all.
  7. I prefer baitcasting gear and find myself using it for techniques that I used to do with spinning gear, e.g. many weightless plastics. With that said I rarely have a trip that I don't use spinning gear at some point. For light line and baits it is an essential part of my arsenal. Watch a Bassmasters Elite event and you will almost always find a few pros using spinning gear. It may not be popular, but it is sometimes necessary in my opinion.
  8. Well done BobP. Your reply could, and maybe should, be bookmarked.
  9. Tie a weight of some sort to a length of rope marked at specific intervals with a permanent marker. In my part of the world there is little need to measure beyond about 30' other than curiosity. Drop a marker buoy on a known depth, and play around with various baits to get a feel for the rate of fall. A C-rig is a very good bait for finding depth, bottom contour, structure, and cover. Within a few casts you can begin to get a mental picture of the bottom and the shape of a point or hump. You can verify your findings with a couple of depth readings in key spots. Marker buoys are essential to this process IMO. Fishing without electronics is a pain for those of us who take them for granted. When I don't have them it forces me to pay closer attention to visible clues to bottom contour and structure, and what my bait is doing. That's not all bad. Good luck.

Well at least I was right about the winning team. I should have known the aces would pitch well, whether the weather was good or not. Go Cards!

Cold, wet, and windy is a lock. Temp at game time: 47 Light rain Wind at 15-20 gusting to 35. I put the over/under at 14, and will take the over. This will not be a night where pitchers will shine. Cards win by 2 or 3!
  12. Arm chair ethics? We were asked how we would respond to a mis-marked item. Since you asked when checking out, your actions speak for you. Asking is the key, though an indifferent employee who could care less about her employer is a good example of unethical behavior in my view. "Who knows?" is a lazy and irresponsible answer. OK I'm done now...
  13. Bassclary here is the original question: My answer is knowingly taking advantage of a mis-marked item is dishonest. Would you take the same advantage at the mom and pop store? If I drop my wallet and you see it fall, do you return it to me or do you profit from my mistake? If you drop your wallet and I see it fall, do you expect me to return it to you? When does saving or making a dollar take precedence over doing the right thing? Most every violation of ethics comes down to rationalizing "they" somehow deserved it. It is a slippery slope.
  14. The Curado 50/51E is a very nice reel, and at clearance price it is a fantastic deal. I think you will be very happy with it. I have had excellent service from all three of my PQs over the last few years. I think they the best value out there under $100. I have heard few complaints. Bass Pro has always done the right thing when it comes to customer service in my experience. Good luck.
  15. I would not knowingly take advantage of a mistake, whether it be by Mom and Pop's down the street or WalMart. When an employee marks something wrong and the company takes a loss on that item, someone has to pay the cost. That someone is me, and you, and everyone else that shops there. The notion that it's OK if it is a big store and not when it is a smaller one does not work for me. If it is wrong, it's wrong-plain and simple. If you feel that you are being taken advantage of by the big corporate store, take your money somewhere else. It is not right to cheat them because they make a profit on you. Just my opinion. You asked...
  16. I like the Rangers, and if they were playing anyone other than the Cards I would be cheering for them. Truth is I feel the Cards are playing with house money; if the Rangers beat them I will be disappointed, but not like other times in the past (KC in 85 still makes me a little sick thinking about it) where we expected to win. We in Cardinal Nation understand all too well that getting there and winning it all are not the same. The Rangers have put together a great team that should win it this year, but they have to beat a good Cardinal team that is hot and has been tested by fire...it should be a great Series.
  17. I am a life-long Cardinal fan, and this season is one of the most surprising of them all to this point. They should not have made the playoffs. That they did and have beaten two very good teams to get to the Series is crazy. Even crazier is they have a great chance of winning the thing. They've made a believer out of me. Sfritr, not liking Tony puts you in good company. Many in St. Louis call for his head regularly (although none right now ). He does things his way, and some of his decisions are hard to understand. We've had some very good players that could not play for him. With that said, his record speaks for itself. I'll take my chances with him calling the shots. Only time will tell if the Redbirds can go all the way. I would not bet against them. Go Cards!
  18. Interesting post. As others have said, when you can sustain yourself on your own you are an adult. For the most part 18 is the age you can do this. Some achieve it earlier, others never do... I think some confuse being an adult with being a man. Being a man includes maturity, strength, wisdom, compassion, sacrifice-putting others needs first. That is a process that takes a little while, and some of us never quite get it.
  19. Like Hooligan, for me the right answer is never. For those of you who swear by it, I'm pleased it makes y'all happy. I just don't like it.
  20. I am another PQ fan. I have three that get regular use and have performed flawlessly-two for three years and the other for two. They are fine reels even at full retail, and you can often find them on sale for about $80. I would also look for clearance sales of the Curado E series reels. If you can still find one, they are fine reels, esp at clearance price. Shimano's decision to discontinue this series has disappointed many posse members.
  21. Don Barone is a working man's writer who captures both the bitter and the sweet of being a regular guy. His honesty and insight is extraordinary. Although he does not consider himself to be a "real" writer, nobody does a better job of painting the picture of professional fishing and the thousands of regular guys who dream of making a living pursuing their dream. I believe he is not only a great writer, but also a fine philosopher and poet. Thanks Glenn for posting his articles.
  22. I used Trilene XL for years. It is a high quality mono, and while it casts beautifully on spinning or casting, it doesn't have the abrasion resistance I wanted. I have tried a couple of different lines and settled on P-Line CXX. I use 6# on spinning, and 12# and 15# on baitcasting. As J Franco mentioned it performs much better with KVD Line & Lure.
  23. Red, for your needs it sounds like SI/DI is a no-brainier. Since you are covering a limited area, marking spots and finding your way home at night in the fog are not as likely to be issues. I can read a map just fine too, but add fog and darkness to the mix and things can get interesting, esp on a large lake. I really like having GPS. I hope to save up my nickles and dimes to add SI/DI to my HDS before next year. The hand held GPS option is a good one. A friend and I were able to find our way back to the ramp a couple of years ago on a very foggy night using his inexpensive hand held unit.
  24. A freind of mine picked up a couple of the Curado 51Es on clearance a few weeks ago. They are outstanding. I am not a Shimano posse member, but you are going to like that reel.

The Cards ousting the Phillies from the play-offs was not something even the most loyal Red Bird fans expected. Who would have thought the best pitching in the series would be Cardinals? These guys may just win it all this year?! I just hope they can beat the Brewers...Come on rally squirrel!
