  1. Since I've just got back into fishing this past year most of my outings have been to a couple ponds on my brother in law's property. In addition, I don't have a boat, so I only fish from the bank. I have the same "problem", not knowing what the depth is, what cover (if any) is available, etc. My best results have come with a split shot c-rig, with a slow, steady retrieve, or a stop and go, twitching retrieve. Most hits, and fish landed, were fairly close to the bank (say within 30 ft or less). Have caught quite a few 2, 3 and 4 pounders with this. Also have had success with some Storm swim baits, mostly out in the middle part of the water. Appreciate the views/input of others who fish the same types of waters... and Happy New Year to all! TC
  2. I think you have the right idea, having your parents as your role models. Not all younger folks have the blessings of good, hard working parents, but that should be where you start... good for you!. I agree it is not the responsibility of athletes, in any sport, to be a role model. I do think it is their responsibility to understand the impact they have on young eyes and ears. Hootin' and hollerin' like Ike is one thing, but some of the stuff we see in sports goes over the line. TC
  3. Avid, agree totally with you on this one. IMO the younger generation should be focusing on choosing role models closer to home, starting with their parents, teachers and the like. With that being said I believe there are far too many professional athletes in all sports, and especially the high profile/high $ sports, that don't understand their impact on the children and young adults who watch them. Whether those athletes like it or not their actions are being watched, and often times emulated, by many of today's youths. It's a difficult position to be in, but they have to understand that when they choose a high-reward career in the spot light. TC
  4. ghoti, Great idea with the gloves, will have to keep a pair in the bag. Thanks! TC
  5. LOL... Santa brought me a BPS baitcaster rod/reel combo, can't wait to try it out. I'm anxious to learn the baitcasting ropes, since I've really only used spinning reels. TC
  6. This is my first post... after seeing some of the great posts on this thread I felt compelled to jump in. I read somewhere (not sure if this site or not) that if you introduce a child to fishing before they are ten yrs. old there is a good chance they will enjoy fishing into adulthood. My great-uncle had a place on the Mississippi about an hour north of St. Louis, where we live, and he took me there a few times when I was around 7 or 8. We fished for catfish, nothing fancy, just some stinkbait on a treble hook and a bobber. We always caught fish and I've loved to fish ever since. Well, I'm 40 now and through the years I've fished off and on, and fortunately two of my best friends were always there to take me with them and teach me the ropes. I am far from an expert now, but I can hold my own on the water and have my two buddies to thank. By the way, I have a 7 yr. old daughter and 5 yr. old son, and have taken them both fishing a couple times. They love it, although they have only caught a couple small fish. Heck, most of the time my son doesn't even want a hook or lure, just likes casting and reeling! I'll continue to take them fishing, to try and teach them as much as I can and let them decide for themselves if they want to continue. If all goes as planned, I'll have fishing buddies for life!!! TC ... & go Cardinals!
