Harvesting Fish for Dinner
I use a LONG plastic FISH STRINGER. I use the ones with about 6 snaps for piersing thru the skin at the front of the mouth and lip area. NOT thru to open gill areas. The stringer also has a single Clip at the end in the boat. All those metal clips allow for catch & release of earlier caught fish.............. BUUUTTTTTTTT DO NOT forget to pull the fish into a boat before moving out.. AAANNNDDD Putting them into a Home Depot 5 gallon pail of water for no more than about 5 minutes. If 5 small perch size. Change water every 5 minutes if still in a running boat. I have kept them frisky all morning or all after noon this way in August.

Best fly / lure for most any freshwater fish. IF you can see it moving in the water.
I have never figured where a carp has stored all that energy. And how long they can maintain the power level. I have played a carp for 20 minutes in a slow river She was almost as fast & strong as at the start. Like trying to beach a Bass Boat using the trolling motor. The 20 pounders are very long fighters on 10# test . I have a lightweight saltwater reel with almost 600' of line. I have had to start walking after the carp to prevent it emptying the spool. Catch & released carp are very different in a river. They start going downstream for ever. Until the line breaks. I use a tapered fly line leader tied to the hook. Just the hook is left in the fish. Not a whole reel full of line.

Opening day of Trout season in N J. Cast hook with 4 kernels of corn on it. ZIIIPPPP the flash of a hitting fish as it goes about 100' in 3 seconds. WWWAAAAHHOOOOO I am taking home a huge breeder Rainbow Trout. 5 minutes more of unstoppable runs both ways in the little creek. I am releasing a fantastic MALE carp. Do no confuse females & males of most fish. Catt Beautiful stream there. ?

I just get bored when there are lots of easy hook ups. The weighted fly is really like a sinking lure. No barb on the hook. So when he ? she ? runs out all the backing ? Yeah It was a test I failed. But the fish easily spits out the barbless hook. 4 # test is usually about 8 # to 10 # breaking with a great knot.

Laugh time. I have several Muddler Minnows. LARGE ones. BB size or smaller split shot 4' ahead of it are required to get it to the bottom. 4# Monofilament. Flyrod or long soft action spinning rod. Cast upstream into any currents. Small fish about 3" to 9" will attack the BB split shot. Can test your abilities to think what is going wrong. Nothing But the crowd of little fish swimming aggressively WILL WILL bring in bigger fish attacking them. Eventually a biggie hits the black or brown Muddler Minnow. Dragged slowly thru a school of carp ? 20 to 30 pounds of fish on 4 # test ? I have learned to tie the Muddler. I use a VERY SOFT body material . 2 corn nibblets on the hook. Allow enough time to set the hook.

Do you consider kayak fishing to be exercising?
Kayak or a rowboat. The oars MUST MUST be LONG ENOUGH ! Save 10$ ? OWW OWW say your arms. I use 8' wood oars in a 16' X 4.5' wide Lowe Aluminum fish boat of 1986. My 83 year old arms get TIRED. But do not hurt ever. I simply anchor and rest. Or use the 30 hp motor If weather & waves are too much.

Mouse eradication in stored boat?
I live in N J farm area. I know when it is trap & Peanut butter time . I hear their feet scurrying on the attic sheetrock about 10 to 12 o'clock as they go out to feed. Set 4 traps that are tied to a screw eye. Prevents them dragging to a spot to die.

Spinning Reel Seat Idea
Thank you Chris. ?? But I now take only the oldest rods with me. I still have a Fiberglass one I use in a weather front conditions. I also put a reel on a larger flyrod to get my finger to not hurt as much. A bad weather front coming with dense clouds wakes up the fish a lot. Cup of coffee as I recharge the cellphone & put on the yellow rain gear. Hat jacket & trousers. Life is O K again. ?

Spinning Reel Seat Idea
To all of us aging and previously injured thumbs & other fingers wrists / elbows / arms / shoulders. Etc. Your body is AGING. At 83 I am in ....VISUAL .....to anyone else. A fantastic body. 3 heart operations. implanted Pacemaker & defibrulator. over 8 stints in heart vessels. going blind in 1 eye. Cataracts need work. 1/2 of my toes were squashed by a small forktruck now have thick vertical toenails. multiple bad sprains in fingers and wrists. Artnritis all over. Several cracked & broken ribs that are painful with weather. Random stabbing pains with ONLY the first 8 hours of a fast approaching good or bad weather front. The point of life is to somehow accept the loss of being a perfect healthy teenager and Use the WebMD.com and Drugs.com and the best known hospital sites for help with your conditions. There are MANY FANTASTIC medical specialists on the web that give excellent free ACCURATE advice. Including........... " Very sorry to tell you nothing can be done about the steady loss of vision in your left eye from the medication you were given.. Be VERY GREATFUL the left eye is not affecting the vision from the right eye. " My ancient fishing rods have large threaded cork reel seat areas that KEEP the thumb right next to the Index finger joint. But age is forcing me to NOT cast as long or hard. I now troll a lot more. But that creates strained lower back & bent knee problems. Cure is to trial & error different ways with pain at first. Untill better muscles & joints are made stronger. I can now cast with either hand. The left one did not like it at first. O K now.

Bridge Hooksets?
2 important points. Fishing from bridges & cliffs 20 to 50' above the water in a breeze is a very DROOPY line. Using a single hook compared to a hard body lure with 2 or 3 trebles ? The fish has a lot in his favor. Non pro people rarely yank the fish as hard as the pros. T V shows them pulling so hard small & medium fish come whistling by or smashing into the boat side. 2 minute no fishing penalty.

How much wasted tackle?
I know when I have to much STUFF. I drag it all out on a bed. And decide what I will take to the hardship discount center for people not so well off as I am.. I make up a complete working setup some lures, spinners weights, float, pre snelled hooks. I hang around until a kid and parent come in. If the parent say YES he fishes. I & the family spend a couple of minutes on the gear. ONLY crushed hooks are given out. I show the family how to remove a stuck in hook sometimes Rub on Alcohol slide the hook into my skin. Then pull it out instantly. Parent & child smile as if a fear was ended. The sting going in is minor. Sometimes I get to see a child That I gave a setup to. Parent leaves it with me to chat about how they figured out how to catch several perch on 1/2 a worm. Life can be good sometimes. ?

Bridge Hooksets?
Why I do not use light & ultralight off of any bridge, pier or steep sloped R R track locations. Another loser location is a high rock cliff that lets you see the fish coming to the lure. Any wind at all is ridiculous to take up all that slack & droopy line. You are dependent on a stupid fish giving you 3 seconds to tighten up the slack . I had a 40" Tiger Muskie grab my Mepps spinner / minnow combo 4 times as fast as I could recast to her. 5 th time. I turned & RAN away from the fish cranking my big Mitchel spinning reel super fast. Bigger fish can clamp down quite hard if they have been C & R several times. Wear shatter proof glasses. WITH side shields. Full hat with face & neck cover closed up. You can learn how fast you will get shocky with a lure in your face or neck as you drive alone to the E R room. All my hooks have the barbs crushed down. I just slide the hook out of me in a 1/4 of a second. The fish DOES NOT throw the hook IF IF I keep the line tight all the time.. Coming straight at me fast ? I lose a few.

Mouse eradication in stored boat?
I use D Con made with the anticoagulant in the baits. Bigger animals can handle the amount in the dead mouse 2 neighbors cats eat the mice for years. Still fine. I put the baits in a wire mesh tunnel long enough to keep bait away from others. It is staked into the ground out of rain and in the garage. Mice DO DO attack car wiring !! $ 350 Insurance & Honda covered it. They eat that Soy covering on the wires. D Con on the engine. 1 week no more mice.

A noob fisherman getting discouraged
Something to realize about fishing THIS year. Last year a LOT of people took up fishing. EVERYWHERE Some just killed every fish by tearing the hook out of the belly or throat. Others took all home to eat. Some like a neighbor sells every fish to local restaurants for all you can eat Friday nights. So it wipes out all the fish for several years. Cold water fish must take longer to grow big enough again. You did not change. You can still catch them. IF IF there are any left. Cyclops sees a lot with 1 good eye.

Winter Locations - Same as Hot Summer Spots?
I have no idea which bars they go to. But everybody loves to hang out at underwater springs. There are 2 in my bay. Baitfish school up a lot of the time there. Morning, noon and sundown. The SMB are impossible to catch there. They want the real thing only. I stopped fishing it decades ago. Too frustrating.

Koz Get a water tight bag that holds a EPIRB satellite Distress Transmitter in it TIE IT TO YOU !!!!!!!! If you flip out of boat ? Wind blows it away. You MUST TIE yourself to the Kyack !!!!!!!!!!. I am tied to my small fish boat. You can press the transmit button in the freezer bag covering it. The satellite gets your position & relays it to rescue in your area. Add a cheap cell phone to the bag. 911 will work on a lake with houses around it ? My bag also has a hand held VHF radio. Set to 5 watts & USCG channel.

Has anyone noticed the fishing crowds?
End of this year was a total waste of time. Lot less boats with fishing from them. The couple of old timers said ALL types of fish were not being caught on every trip. My marine gas bill was WAY smaller tn gallons bought. But trash from DIAPERS and PIZZA boxes was way up. I would stop trolling & check O B cooling intake for clear sandwich wraps on the underwater drive. A couple.

Great Lakes all need another fill up. Some big freighters were not filled to clear the bottom in some places. The real problem place, is Montreal. It is right on the St. Lawrence River water level. Talk is they want to move it to high enough ground to allow a year around city. We will see.

Smallmouth Movement in Shallow Creeks in the Fall
The creeks & shallows are controlled by angle of the sun & duration of it. Bye bye creek life. They know where the underwater winter grass & food are. I know of 1 year around 50 F spring in the Delaware river. So do th 2 otters as they munch on fish all winter.
