  1. Hard to say which is the best. What you can do is set up some specs for yourself like gear ratio, reel weight, drag strength, left hand option etc. Bass pro online is good for this because you can filter out a lot of these features on the left side of the page and then start narrowing it down from there. What would I buy if I had to spend 300 on a reel? Myself I would get the new gen 3 Abu Garcia premier. That's just what I would buy and am in no way saying its the best reel for that money. Unfortunately, bass pro doesn't carry some brands like lews or okuma. Good luck
  2. Went to Bass Pro today to do some pre classic sale scouting and I can definitely say that I'm going with the sx. The JM reel is actually kinda BIG. Like a fat version of the PQ. Don't really like that. It sure was smooth but so was the sx and the sx was smaller and lighter and looked cooler Thanks for the reply's.
  3. I have them on my PQ. Let me tell you, at first I was a little indifferent. I almost didn't like them, but I left them on and decided to get used to them which didn't take long. I've been using them for 2 years now and I took them off for the first time to see how I would like them on the new revo s. Well let me tell you.....BOY does it feel awkward and nowhere near as nice with them off. I never would have know that had I taken them off to try on the revo but man, it sure does make a difference. With that said, unless the reel comes with EVA knobs, every reel I have is gonna get these. I'm picking more up Friday at the start of the classic sale. Super worth it!
  4. I own the s but the only reason I'm looking at the sx is for the higher speed ratio for jiggin. The JM line retrieve is actually greater even though they are both 7:1. 31" vs 29" on the sx.
  5. The only difference between the PQ's you have and the revo s is the weight, size and lack of mag brakes on the s. And of course what they look like on the outside. I do feel that the s is a bit smoother but not by all that much. The pq is actually a very nice reel. That being said I don't think you will have any more or less difficulty learning on the s versus the pq. As a matter of fact, if you leave the cent brakes on and turn the mag brakes all the way off on the pq, you can basically see what it will be like to cast with the s right now.
  6. I'm planning on getting the sx at the classic sale next week but $114 is a pretty nice price for the JM sig series reel. I also like that the line retrieve on the JM 7:1 is 31" per rev vs the sx at 29. The sx is a lighter reel, but the JM feels pretty darn smooth with those high end bearings. The sx is mag only, JM has both cent and mag. The sx has a stronger drag but my PQ has never had an issue with drag strength. I really want to stay with abu products especially since they have a 3 year no questions asked return policy. What do you fine folks think.....?? Thanks
  7. Just get the regular mgx. You're not really gonna tell the weight diff at that point. Plus it's a good amount cheaper. Or go with the new premier for that matter. Stronger drag, same brakes as the mgx and still light as heck.
  8. Well think of it like this. Will the iPad version work for the iPhone? If not you're screwed but if you buy the iPhone one at least you know that you can use it on the iPad. Anyone want to confirm if it works both ways?
  9. It would be nice if it told me how many calories I burn since I'm burning my own fuel in my kayak.
  10. Same thing for big bethel Rez. Shows a body of water but no depth contour.
  11. Nah, sorry. No topo for that area. But it's funny, it shows there is fish there! Lol!
  12. I have it and I think it's totally worth it. It uses the same topographical data as the store bought navigation systems. It's just super nice to have it on the phone cause you have your phone with you all the time. You can even use it ice fishing and mark spots to come back to. The best thing is that if there is a map update, it's easy to do because you just update through the App Store. I bet it's a pain to update traditional gps systems, not to mention you probably have to pay for the update. It's not a fish finder/ depth finder of course but it perfectly tells you where you are, how far to go to a way point, miles per hour or nautical miles per hour and other nice features. One more thing, because you bought it in the App Store, if you ever upgrade to a newer iPhone you automatically get a performance boost without having to re-buy the software. Just redownload on your newer beast phone and off you go. Hope that helps. Ask questions if you like.
  13. They had these at Dick's a while back on clearance. Got 2 for a buck each.
  14. Oh man, I cleaned out their stock of havoc hawk hawgs and devil spears. I got 20 bags for less than 20 bucks. Also got some xr-50 crankbaits for a buck a piece. I love how they clearance their crap like that. Win win for me!
  15. That's a good idea. I'll use my gps to check my speed. Thanks!
  16. Hey there, awesome post and pics. I want to ask you how fast it is? I have an emotion kayaks renegade and it's only 10 foot. It feels slow but it's my first and only kayak so I don't really have a reference. Thanks
  17. My friend ended up hooking a seagull and flew it around like a kite before he could get it in. During that time the bird was going nuts and ALL these other birds started swarming over the boat like the movie the birds. My friend actually has the first part of the event on video on his fb page.
  18. I use a MH for soft plastics and it feels perfect. I even swung a 3.8lb into the boat, no prob. For jigs it feels a little front heavy if going more than a 1/2 oz. I'm using the micro guide one also. Excellent rods.
  19. There are other posts of the same topic. Use the forum search. I love mine. Smooth, light and looks great.
  20. I just looked this up. Yeah it's a new pq rod. This isn't the older one I have. It looks to be a brand new rod from bass pro. I'll have to do some further investigation on this but still at $99 for both? Without looking at it, it sounds like an incredible deal.
  21. X4 for pq setup. However when I bought mine they still sold the pq rod which I love and I'm not happy they discontinued it. But, the carbonlite is a great rod as well. Lighter than the pq rod that I have even. The reel though is an awesome one. It's one of the lowest priced but quality reels that have both centrifugal and magnetic brakes. This will allow you to become familiar with both styles of brakes without having to buy separate or more expensive reels for these features. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with the reel whatsoever. It may not be the lightest, smallest, flashiest or strongest (absolutely plenty of strength though) reel on the market but since you're starting out it won't matter to you because you won't have a reference. But believe me, the reel is so good, especially for its price point that you will be absolutely satisfied with your purchase. Just do one thing before you buy and that's take whatever reel you're looking at and actually put it on different rods. You will find a comfort difference between reel seats, trust me. Good luck.
  22. All of my rods are of the $100 caliber but I'd someday like to splurge on a $200-$300 one. I was reading something somewhere that most people drop more money on the reel when it actually should be the other way around. The idea being you get more advantages with a high quality rod than a high quality reel. Do any of you feel that is the case? And do you know that and buy the reel anyway?
