  1. honestly good and cheap don't really go together as far as kayak seats go. What type of kayak are you in? I know in my old redfish it came with a pretty crappy seat so instead of dropping big bucks on a nicer seat (i was planning on getting another kayak the next spring) i jsut used one of those foam seat cushions and slid it underneath the seat and it made a world of difference.
  2. I would think since it is a private lake that game and fish would have no jurisdiction anyways. You did the right thing by trying to educate him so i would leave it at that. And for the record, i hate pickerel when i am bass fishing but they sure do make the day better when the water is still cold but the air is warm and they are very active and the bass are still sleeping
  3. Most of the more stable boats are on the heavier side due to the hull designs which is where your stability comes into play. I have a coosa and that things heavier than my commander 120.
  4. i prefer a screw lock 5/0 for the ribbits myself. Usually a trokar or a gammy. I have never had to much luck using the double hook set up and i feel like i have to reel a little faster than i would like to keep the bait on the surface. Seems like the single hook gets me a better hook up percentage than the two hook set up.
  5. they never call pass interference in those cases but it was fairly obvious who caught the ball.
  6. Pickerel will cut through any weight braid like a hot knife through butter so that may be your culprit. Braid is super strong but not very tooth resistant.
  7. Hmmm...i have only been to the linc and fed ex in the past few years and fed ex opened 4 hours before and the linc was open when we got their 8 hours before kick off and there were people already there from the night before. It might be only stadium owned parking lots which most people don't use in philly....
  8. The best way to get cheap tickets is to see a game where the home team sucks and people are unloading season tickets trying to recoup some cost. I went to see my eagels play the deadskins a few years back and bought my tickets the day before the game and they were less than half of face value and they were great seats. Another reason i tailgate is to reduce costs in teh stadium. A cheap charcoal grill, some burgers, brats or whatever and a cooler full of beer will set you back less than 4 beers in the stadium itself. O na side note, don't ever plan on doing a full day tailgate at Fed Ex field.....the parking lots at teh stadium don't open till 4 hours before kickoff. My fiancee and i went up there for a monday night game and got to the stadium around 12 and had to sit there and wait for four hours till they opened the gate. It did turn into a party right there though whihc was kind of cool all by itself....
  9. Philly sports teams are anywhere from $6 or so for the phillies up to about $9 for the eagles. I agree with NASCAR to a point but in the three races i have been to each and every time there was at least 3 people nearby who were either tossed or puking his guts out in the stands. Not saying i haven't seen that at other venues as well but it seems like the tailgaters get their drunk on and then slow down to an extent once the game starts as opposed to NASCAR where tehy just continue by brining the cooloer in with them. I prefer to tailgate and get a good buzz then have a few during the game then tailgate some more afterwards while drinking water and lettign the crowds die down before leaving the parking lot.
  10. i really like the trokars and am slowly replacing all my other hooks as needed. I esepcially like their weighted swim bait hooks and theit unweghted swimbait hooks for frogs.
  11. I also fish a lake with lots of standing timber and they key is to act like the trees are not even there. Once you figure out where you want to fish then focus on the trees in those locations. It seems that the timber provides more cover on already good spots and that is where the fish congregate. The other thing to consider is that just because you can see the tops of the trees it is highly unlikely that hte trees are straight down. I have seen many trees that are angled, half fallen over etc... I also like to try and find grass beds and fish any trees that are present as they seem to hold bigger fish. Good luck!!
  12. If i was limiting myself to a few set ups i don't think that i would go with an UL/L set up, just a little to limited for chasing largemouth in my opinion. I have used one of the berkely lightning rods in the $50 range and it was definitely a nice set up so you may want to look into those. I also prefer the 7' models for fishing from a kayak. I currently carry 4 rods, 2 spinning and 2 baitcasters. The spinning set ups are both MF 7' rods and the baitcasters are 6'8" MXF and 7' MF. THese setups allow me to pretty much throw anything from light baits to heavier jigs and small swim baits. Good luck in your decision makign process and if possible go check out the rods before you buy as some rods, no matter the price, i know didn't feel good to me even though the price tag would say that they should
  13. Catfish seem to be pretty active predators. I have caught channel, blue and flatheads on all kinds of baits from spinnerbaits to flukes to grubs. I always think i have a monster bass on until i get them to the side of the kayak
  14. Great trip!! I have had the pleasure of fishing out west a few times with my favorite being chasing golden trout in the sierras. There is so much more to trout fishing than the catching part which is why i like to take a break from the bass every once in a while and head out to the old blue ridge moutnains chase the only native trout (well char technically but we won't get into semantics:) ) on the east coast....the brookie. Most beautiful fish out there in my opinion.
  15. Nope. Never rinse anything. Like has been stted it isn't going to help with making it safer and it only increases your chance of cross contamination as you rinse and move the meat around the kitchen. I also have specific cutting boards that are used for specific tasks. One for raw meat, one for cooked meat and one for veggies and fruits. Helps to keep contamination to a minimum. I also only use poly boards for anything raw and then run in it in the dishwasher by itself on the sanitize cycle to kill anything that remains.
  16. Also don't get to hung up on the gear ratios. I use a left handed reel so i am more limited in my gear ratios but i figure it isn't that big of a deal as i can always slow down or speed up my retrieve slightly and achieve good results. now if i was fishing buzzbaits or soemthing else high speed i would probably look at a high gear ratio but i find the 6:1 works well for all around use.
  17. I will add in my .02 and say if you go with benchmade or the cold steel and you will not be disappointed.
  18. Bobber stops for me. I just use those same ones that have the little sleeve and thread that you pull tight. I then color them with a sharpie so they are not flourescent.. I have also had some good success using 10lb flouro tied in a blood knot around the main line which works pretty well too.
  19. I prefer spinning but i would go with a M XF rod for that application. THe XF seems to really help with the action more so than a fast does. I think the mojo comes in a 6'8" MXF which would suit your needs pretty well.
  20. Local place here for the nice NY style which was hard to find after moving to VA from philly ...pepperoni and black olives is my favorite. if i am to lazy to go pick it up i will order papa john's or pizza hut delivery and i always kick myself for being to lazy to go drvie the 5 minutes to go pick up a real pizza.
  21. Don't try and overthink it and just set the hook. If you take the time to think which shoulder should i set thte hook on you will lose fish. Using modern braided lines with minimal stretch the quick hookset seems to do the trick. I think the more important thing is to have sticky sharp hooks and use a hook as small as you can get away with as it is less metal to push through the fish's mouth.
  22. I have been using the seaguar knot here lately and had pretty good success. It is also pretty darn easy to tie.
  23. How about "breaks" and "brakes"...i see it all the time on some automotive forums i frequent.
  24. Thanks for the response. I have thought about getting a john boat but i am somewhat addicted to the kayak part of fishing Cheaper to maintain, no registration, no trailer to tow and you get exercise all at the same time I saw you guys out there on Diascund a few weeks back so i figured i would check out and see how kayak friendly the tournament format is towards kayaks. I saw the posted weights of the winners and ia mpretty sure i would have at least won or got second that day Anyways good luck out there and thanks again for the info
  25. Are the tournaments catch photograph and release or are they actual weigh ins? I currently fish out of a kayak so keeping fish alive all day is somewhat problematic.
