How's The South Florida Bite? Holiday, Big L Etc..
Thursday 7/10/14 Went to Clewiston today for lunch. They are moving a lot of water south from the lake, and the levels seem to be high at the Clewiston ramps, and they are up at the Holey Land. There should be a lot of water moving in the Holey Land, and Alley this weekend. Moving water should be good for fishing.

Know Your Grass...
Yes certain grasses only grow in areas with certain bottom make up. Two things I have read and learned over the years: 1). An area with two or more types of vegetation is better then an area with just one type of vegetation. 2). Isolated clumps of vegetation surrounded by open water, are better then a big expanse of one type of cover. Fish will concentrate around the isolated clumps, rather then sit out in open areas.

What Should I Have Done?
Great looking body of water. Several things you can do on windy days without spending loads of money on power poles. 1)Find some protected shore, protected bays, to duck behind. 2)Use the wind as a friend and let it float you across some productive water. Key is too put out a sea anchor, and it will slow you down big time. 3)If the wind is blowing through a cut, face into the wind and fish each side on the down wind side. Wind will cause current, and fish will position on the leeward side looking for targets. You can catch a bunch in these areas.

Whats Your Tow Vehicle?
I have a loaded 2011 Ford F150. Love this vehicle, smooth and quiet on the road, Good highway mileage with big engine and 80.000 on a set of tires. Last F150 went 250,000 miles. No complaints! Would recommend to my best friend. Best part is air-conditioned seats! Wonderful

Mean Mouth Bass
Do you know why it got the name mean mouth? I have caught loads of peacock bass in south Florida, now those are mean mouths!

Took My Cousin Fishing
Mudfish do put up a good fight, but they will destroy a bunch of gear. I have straightened more hooks on mudfish then any other. I bet he had a ball fighting them. 10 to12 pounds is not uncommon down here.

Sunday 7/6/14, Alligator Alley, Mm 39, North Side
Thanks buddy, my daughter got married in Georgia and we were gone for over three weeks. Now the only thing keeping off the water are the Monsoon Storms.

Fish Attractants
Whether they work or not is debatable, but they can't hurt. I put a drop or two in my plastic bags. I keep the boat clean that way. If you think it helps, I'm sure it will!

How's The South Florida Bite? Holiday, Big L Etc..
Thanks for the report as usual. I haven't been to Lox in a while, with storms threatening I usually head for the Alley and the safety of the bridges.

Sunday 7/6/14, Alligator Alley, Mm 39, North Side
Big changes on Alligator Alley since 1967. You would not believe all the quality ramps and parking areas. 40 miles of great fishing, but loads of big gators.

Problem Casting With New Rod
In south Florida the vegetation is so heavy that I use med. heavy, or heavy, almost all the time. Once hooked you need to get their head up right away so you don't get rapped in the junk. You may not need that stiff a rod in your lakes. Where are you fishing?

Sunday 7/6/14, Alligator Alley, Mm 39, North Side
Sunday 7/6/14, 7:00 - 10:30, cloud cover, temp 85-90, water up considerable, wind SE 5-10. Went out today with Dave (Canesfan). Launched and ran east to the dead end. We fished back toward the ramps. We started catching fish right away. Dave caught the big fish of the day on his first cast, using a chatterbait. I caught fish right away on a senko bait. Beside these two baits we caught them on flukes, trick worms, centipedes, and beavers. By 10:30 there was a threat of storms approaching so we called it a day. We finished with about 40 fish, the biggest caught by Dave at about 2.5. It was a fun relaxing day except for an aggressive 9 foot gator. Dave hooked into a tail walking fish and all of a sudden we see this gator heading for us like a bullet. Usually they get close and just stop. Not this guy! I hit the trolling motor on high and he outpaced us and got right next to the boat. He rubbed the entire length of his body against the hull and then slapped the hull. All of this happened at full trolling speed. He was obviously really mad or in deep love with the hull of my boat. Since its breeding season it might be the second choice. This was a big gator with an aggressive style! Very unusual for the Alley Gators. On the way back home we hit Monsoon rains. Still a fun day for both of us.

Know Your Prey.
I first saw this video about 30 years ago. I was amazed at that time and I am still amazed. It is my favorite fishing video of all times. I have a copy but no video player that still works. Thanks for digging that one up again. I'm sure the members that haven't seen it will be amazed at the photography and beauty of this pristine Florida River, and the bass that live there. This one is a winner!

How Long Do You Last
I don't ever fish for more than 4 hours, but I do it at least 6 days a week.

Who Eats Bass?
I don't know anyone that eats bass anymore, although I see people using live bait keeping everything they catch. I don't have a problem with people eating bass, but its not for me. For twenty years, we have had warning signs all over the place from Okeechobee south, warning about eating fish from these waters. Mercury levels are way too high to be safe. A product of all the fertilizers used in the sugarcane industry. This has certainly helped the catch and release efforts. Every fish released is there to get bigger and be caught again. A win win!!!!!

What Is A Nice Fish?
It depends where you live. Personally, a Kodak Moment for me, is anything over 5 pounds. The others I usually just return to the water without much ceremony.

Mean Mouth Bass
Never heard of a mean mouth before, very interesting. How big do they get?

Fishing After A Thunderstorm
I have had good luck right after a storm as long as it didn't dump too much water. After loads of water it sometimes takes a day or two for the water PH to adjust. The fish just seem to get funky!

Conflicting Summer Fishing
Bass are not as sensitive to their environment as their food source. So the bass will not be too far from their next meal. If the food moves off or changes depth so will the bass. Find the bait, and you will find the willing, active, hungry bass!

When You Miss A Fish
When a fish misses a plastic bait, like a senko, fluke, or worm I will kill it and let them come back around and pick it up again. Top water lures, I will keep them moving steady. It has worked many times both ways.

Favorite Conditions For Bass
Without a doubt, low 70's, low humidity, partial cloud cover, winds 5 to 10, water temp low 70's, fishing with a good friend. In south Florida that could be anytime from late November to early April. Why the rest are freezing, we are in utopia.

Fishing Pressure: Mental Confidence Killer.
Fishing pressure is more a fisherman thing, not a fish thing! Successful fishing requires considerable concentration on what your doing. If your distracted by those around you and what their doing, then it will effect your fishing. If your always fishing alone, or always searching isolated spots, then having someone in close proximity will probably effect your concentration. I suggest fishing with others and fishing water frequented by the masses. This will help improve your concentration, believe me the fish really don't care that much! They are certainly not the brightest creature on this planet.
