Best advice for a new bass angler?
Some simple advice. Keep you line wet as often as possible. Use a simple plastic bait, senko, fluke, worm. When things are tough slow down. Have patience. You will catch bass!!!!!!!!

How to fish big shallow lakes?
The ultimate Big, shallow, weedy, lake in the country is Okeechobee, a lot different then your lake just in the fish available to catch. One thing I will tell you is, it's not an easy lake to fish for the occasional bass fisherman. What is good today often changes quickly with weather patterns. Depth changes often occur with blowing wind. Floating Vegetation often shifts with blowing wind. Water clarity will often change over night with wind. Finally fish often shift big time, with all these other changes. Guys that fish it often will have develop a knowledge of where the bass have gone, with the condition that day. The average Joe has not a clue! One constant over the years is, if you find clean water, you'll eventually find fish. Don't count on what you have done before, this often becomes the down fall of even the professionals. Water levels, wind, water clairity, and fish cycles are the biggest factors, on a big, southern, shallow, weedy, Lake. I'm sure yours will be far different.

Fort Myers Peacock Bass Help
Never heard of anyone catching Peas that far north, especially on the west coast. You will need to go south especially on the east coast. They are as far north as West Palm but usually in waters that are deep. Deep water doesn't fluctuate as much, and deep water gets a good supply of water from the aquifer which is a constant temperature. This doesn't mean you need to fish deep, since Peas are often in the top of the water column, or mid range. The further south you go the larger the numbers, and the bigger the Peas. Remember that these fish were released by the state of Florida in Miami because of the large numbers of oscars and chichilids. They were first released in Miami along the turnpike in some retention ponds with not outlets, just to study how they would effect the bass population. Prop baits, Rapala #9 & 11 stickbaits in gold, and small spinnerbaits are good choices. I have caught many on 4" senkos and zoom centipedes jerked fast in weedy situations, where trebles are out of the question. You don't need to get up early, they love heat and the sun so mid day is often good. If you find them on a nest they will defend it to the death, so keep passing threw and around the nest. I would research places in Miami, north to Fort Lauderdale. Lake Osbourne and Lake Ida are good in West Palm because there are deep holes in those lakes. Good luck! Peas are a totally different experience then black bass. They are a fish with a bad attitude when hooked. Hook a big Peacock and you will know immediately its not a bass. Fun to catch.

MM 35, The Miami River
Years ago, with my son, it was two panthers about a mile apart we think talking love. One was close calling to the other, and back and forth. This time, I think was a solo bobcat, just calling out. Both were great experiences, and I'm thrilled I had someone with me both times to share the experience. My son still reminds me of the talking big cats, and that was 20 years ago.

MM 35, The Miami River
MM35, The Miami River Saturday 3/3/18 6:30-12:45 Full Moon all Night Blue Bird Sky Wind 15-20 North Water temp 74* Water heavy stain Picked Rick up early in Weston and we ran out Alligator Alley to the Miami River. Because there was a strong wind coming from the north the river is usually a good place to work. letting the wind push you south makes for easy fishing. We ran north all the way to the flood control station, which is as far as you can go. We noticed right away that the place was full of gar and small bait fish. Every cast we got a constant action from these little pain in the butt fish. We caught some warmouth but no bass for two hours. Around 8:00 we heard a large cat on one of the Islands calling for about twenty minutes. This is the second time I've heard cats out in the glades. Its pretty Cool! Around 9:00 we started catching bass deep in the canal. At 9:30 I foul hooked a big gator at one of the cuts. For about ten minutes we dragged him around until he decided he had enough and broke the line. We finished the day with 13 bass boated, a bunch of warmouth, a gar, a huge mudfish, a gator, and the coolest thing hearing that big cat in the morning sounds of the glades. We used frogs, flukes, senko's, swimbaits, U Vibes, jig and craws, trick worms, hard jerkbaits, and Lizards. We threw the kitchen sink to find some bass. The ramps at MM35 at really poor design. Very shallow when loading, and a drop off at the end of the ramp. Be careful if you use these north ramps. Beautiful day, tough fishing!

How to fish heavy rains?
Unless I was fishing a tournament, its time to pack up and go home. I'm not going to be miserable to catch some fish.

How old?
My son and daughter both started at about 5 years old with a short push button zebco set up. Both have fond memories of those days with a bobber, small hook , and worms, maggots, and crickets. We were targeting fish of any kind and not just bass. We kept the trips short, loaded with snacks, their favorite juice drinks, and lots of praise. It was fun for all. They are 38 & 33 now, it seems like yesterday!

How much pound flouro most used?
15 lb trylene 100% Floro. Good stuff but expensive.

How do you guys walk to your ponds?
I don't walk through tall grass in south florida. We have an abundance of big gators, cotton mouths, pythons up to 15 feet long, and plenty of stinging bugs. From the bank I fish cut banks, where I can look before I step. Just part of living in the Tropics! Even taking precautions, I see snakes a couple of times a week. Have almost stepped on several over the years.

Let's talk coolers
I freeze water bottles, take a lot of them in a small cooler and they double as ice. I take one out at a time and have ice water all day. No need for ice. Always take 3times the amount you think you need during the summer in case you get stuck out there. I’ve learned from experience.

This lake will not beat me (again)!!!!!
I would suggest, slow down and down size!

How often do you fish?
I live west of Fort Lauderdale, and about 5 miles from the Everglades. Even bank fishing I seldom see another person out there fishing. They are all working too hard to pay for the big house, all the toys, and cars they acquire.
-
How often do you fish?
I fish at least 25 days a month. I am surrounded by man made lakes that are loaded with bass and peas. I fish 5 days a week from the bank and one or two days from the boat. To me it is a form of relaxation.

Holey Land (Everglades)
Holey Land 2/17/18 6:30-Noon Blue Bird Sky W/T 74* Water Stained No Current Picked up Rick in Weston and we drove up 27 to the Palm Beach Line. We had the place to ourselves. Once in the water we went down the East canal all the way to the east bend. Rick started with a HB Frog, and I started with the Wooper Popper. They were not having any top water action today. I switched to a U-Vibe and on the first cast had a bass. Soon we were both throwing plastics and both catching at a constant pace. You had to fish slow and most bass were caught deep along the bottom. We drifted about a mile and a half, and then motored to the big lakes. We fished the big lake and then called it quits. We finished with exactly 40 fish, and several mudfish. If you threw back in the pads you got nailed by Blue Gill, and Brim, aggravating little guys! I have not been out there since the killing of the boater by target practice nuts cases. I am happy to say there was no shooting anywhere out there . The FWC must be enforcing the laws. Great job guys! A nice day of fishing with good company.
