What is a good trailer to use with a 3/8 vibrating jig or chatter bait? New to using them much at all.
  2. I have VERY limited space in my boat for a variety of set-ups. I have a Dobyns Champion 705CB, Med./Hvy with a Mod/Fast Action that has been used very little. Would this rod work for light top water like poppers, buzz baits. and 3/8 oz. chatterbaits with a trailer, and an occasional light Chopo? Would likely be used with quality 12lb. mono.
  3. I would like to clean the blanks on some of my rods. What would you suggest I use? Thanks
  4. Thanks for your input. Will the same rod work for top water such as buzz baits and walking baits?
  5. Can I throw jerk baits on a MH crankbait rod such as the Dobyns 705CB. What is your opinion? Have very limited space in my boat for a variety of setups.
  6. Does anyone know how to remove those hard water stains from outboard? I have not been wiping it down after using it as I should have been.
  7. Can anyone tell me about how the the size and diameter of the guides on the St. Croix Legend X spinning rods compare with the Legend Extreme spinning rod seris? I use 15 lb. braid with a floro leader and the smaller guides on the Extreme seris gives me more than a little concern about knot wear, even though I know they are not micros. I have a Legend Elite spinning rod with "regular" size guides and obviously no problem with them as far as knot wear is concerned. Am I asking for trouble with the smaller guides when using an alberto knot and leader? I am very interested in the Legend X but am worried that if they have the smaller diameter guides as on the Extreme, they would eventually wear on the knot fraying and damaging the knot. Am I getting worried about a problem that does not exist?
  8. Does the St. Croix Legend X line of spinning rods have micro guides?
  9. Thanks for all the opinions and information thus far. Another question. There seems to be a significant price difference depending on which brand of tungsten you want to buy. Is brand that important? It would seem to me that tungsten is tungsten no matter which brand you plan on buying, or am I missing something?
  10. I have used nothing but black painted lead worm wights for T-rigging my whole life. I have refused to pay the cost of tungsten. I recently considered trying tungsten to see what the "deal or advantages" of them are if any. Would someone please explain to me why should I should use tungsten instead of lead? Is it size of sinker compared to weight? Any and all opinions and explanations would be welcome. Somebody convince me. What is better about tungsten over lead to justify the cost? I usually T-rig with pegged worm weight
  11. I have been fishing crank baits for years with a graphtie casting rod even going back to the days of pistol grip handles and seem to get along OK. I am currently using a 7 ft. 3in. graphite casing rod Hvy./ Fast Action for the crankbaits I normally throw (1/2 to a max. of 1 oz.) usually deeper running crankbaits. In reallity how much better would a dedicated crank bait rod actually be, if any, for these baits? I am an "old tmer" and at times hard to convince, but can be. Are these typpes of rods that much better or is it the manufactuers trying to sell me? Please, no insult intened to those who use or buy them. Just looking for answers.
  12. Looking for a good floating finesse worm. Any suggestions? Will probably be used on shaky head.
  13. I see the new Dobyns Champion Extreme HP casting rods are supposed to be an upgrade as compared to the older Extremes. I have one of the older Extremes purchased about four years ago, and I really like it. My question is this. For those who have fished both the older Extremes or the Hp Extreme, what is your opinion of the new Extreme HP line. I own several Dobyns rods and have been satisfied. I am considering buying the 744 in the Hp Extreme with a split handle. I have heard they have had a problem with the reel seats, but I do not know if that is true or not. I would like some input before buying because they are not the cheapest rods around. Will use it primarily for Texas rigging and jigs.
  14. fishballer06 Thanks for the reply. I also have the 705CB which as you know also has very similar specs as the 765CB lure wt. etc. except for length, but it seems to me like the rods are to different "animals" altogether. My brother has the 765CB and it fishes well. My 705CB seems to struggle with DT16's and 14's while his 765CB handles them without a problem. His 765CB has a LOT more guts and "umph" than my 705CB for those deeper running baits. Would you agree?
  15. I am in the market for a new crank bait rod. Will throw Rapala DT-16's and 10's and other baits in that size range or even slightly larger. I am a Dobyns and St. Croix fan by choice. I am looking at the Dobyns Champion XP 765 MH rated for 1/4 oz. to 1 oz. and 8-20 lb. test line. The other rod is the St. Croix Legend Tourn. 7ft 8 in. MH rated 3/8 oz. to 1 oz. and 10 to 20 pound test line. St Croix web site calls it their "Big Cranker." Site also says total rod weight is only 4oz. if I read it correctly. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Anyone had experience with the new Legend Glass from St. Croix?
  16. I do a lot of fishing with thick plastics and was hoping someone could help determine which of these two hooks they prefer. I am getting ready to order for the spring. of these two, which one do you feel is a better option?
  17. As a general rule then, would the extra fast tapered rods would work better for treble hook baits like crankbaits?
  18. Am I correct in assuming that a rod with an extra fast taper will have a "softer tip" than say a fast or moderate taper?
  19. I was reading a review that stated that the Fenwick World Class casting rods are the same blank as the NRX. It seems, according to this customer review, that Fenwick bought the blank from Loomis. Does anyone know if that is the case or is it fiction?
  20. I am looking to buy a new worm and jig rod that can also be used throw some crank baits. Would a MH 7 ft. 4 in. rated for 1/4 to 3/4 oz. do the trick? Looking at the Dobyns Champ EX 743. Also use a lot of 5/16 oz. shakey heads with 5/0 hooks with craws such as a Biffle Bugs for example. I am not really into technique specific rods. Just a rod that will do the job. To be used in light to moderate cover.
  21. I recently purchased a Hummiin Bird Helix 7 to mount on the bow of my boat. Get an a lot of electrical interference when trolling motor is on. They are connected to different batteries and I have turned off all other devices when in use, and that does not solve the problem. Unit is just sonar and Down Imaging with no mapping or GPS. Have used Lowrance and Garmin in the same situation and did not have the same problem. If anything, the problem seems to be getting worse as I try to use the unit. Self installed the unit but have done so many times over the years with no difficulty. Any suggestions as to how to solve the problem?
  22. Still fishing here in Iowa, but ice will be covering the lakes here in a very short while and would like to get my rods cleaned up and stored for the winter. I use a Magic Eraser as suggested on this forum on the cork and seems to to the job, but what about the blanks themselves? A mild soap and water? A light application of car, furniture, or some type of wax? Want them looking as good as possible. Any suggestions would be welcome. The rods will be stored indoors.
  23. Of the three rods you mentioned I would go with the Avid. Have used several St. Croix rods and have been satisfied with all of them. Customer service I have found to be the best in the business.
  24. Forgot to mention this rod will be paired with a Stradic FJ and 15lb. braid with 10 lb. floro leader
  25. I would like to purchase a new Champion spinning rod. I enjoy throwing light cranks on spinning gear. I have been looking at the 702 Med. Lt.(1/8 oz. to 1/2 oz) and the 703 Med (3/16 oz. to 5/8 oz.) The MAX this rod will need to throw is 1/2 oz. in fairly open water, but needs to throw 1/4 oz. well with pretty good distance. Would kind of prefer the 702 for some reason, but does the 702 really have the" backbone" for 1/2 oz? Which of these two rods would you recommend? I believe they are both fast action and could live with either one.
