  1. I was recently watching a video that brought back some wild childhood memories, so I thought I would share and compare. This could be stories of my experiences and no one else’s or it could be a very common stories of adolescence and immaturity. Here are several of the stories I am referring to. While fishing as a kid fish was on some occasion very slow. I mean not even a bite for hours so being a kid with a short attention span I start exploring the shore line looking for everything and anything at the same time. I notice a snake swimming across the top of the water (6-7 foot black snake) across the entire lake coming my way. I grab a popper and popped it a couple of time right in front of it.......just to see what would happen (eyes rolling). BAM, splash, roll and oh crap it ate it. Then reality sets in and I am like awww &^%$ what am I going to do now. About a hours later and with the help of a couple fellers snake is unhooked and I will leave it at that. Lesson learned! Don't mess with the snakes! On another fishing trip a couple years later while on a boat on a different body of water I am working a torpedo bait and have a turtle following my bait. The turtle is curious, I am curious, my buddy was curious. I keep the bait just out of reach and a then all of a sudden a flying groundhog flew by and my bait stopped for a second. Blamcracklez "CRAP turtle on"! It was a pig too. We landed it and for like 2 hours we are fighting to get the treble hook out without getting bit. What a nightmare, took us till dark and ended our fishing trip! It didn't help that it was also 100 degrees out. Once again lesson learned "Don't mess with the turtles". Recently while in a tournament I was fishing a grass bank where a giant Blue Herring stood. I casted a weedless frog in the grass past the bird when all of a sudden the bird jumped up and flew by dive bombing my frog. I pulled my bait away very quickly. Needless to say from past experiences there was no way in the world I was going to bring that behemoth in the boat. See I did learn a lesson!! Lesson learned.. Any similar stories anyone? J-
  2. What a truly amazing and motivational story... Its awesome and amazing how therapeutic fishing can be. It also amazing how having a buddy with you makes a awesome fishing trip a memorable one! J
  3. The best fishing of my life happened when I learn to offshore fish on the Potomac river when I was 15. Prior to that all I did was beat up banks, lay downs and grass flats. An old buddy of mine took me out in his bass boat to a creek channel that hugged a little point in about 10ft of water. The entire time I am eye balling the bank and wondering what we were doing. Till this point I only thrown a jigs at trees or shore cover (trees, shopping carts, lawn chairs, old tv's, etc. lol city fishing). My old buddy casted his jig out into the middle of nowhere, or at least that is what I thought. Before I could asked him what he was casting at, it was "FISH ON". I am no sucker after netting his 4lber (that was a huge fish to me back in the day) I grabbed a jig and was mimicking his every rod movement. We must have caught a couple dozen or so fish before the bite completely died. They were all 3lbs + with the biggest being 6.5lbs but it seemed like a bite on every cast. I have for sure had better days and caught more and bigger fish since then but it was such a eye opening experience and so exciting that I am not sure that day can ever be matched. J-
  4. What is the best fishing trip of your life? Share your story. It could have been a 30 minute fishing trip, a all day fishing trip, or multiple day fishing trip. What made it so great? J-
  5. Two things never forget to try a creature bait on a drop shot rig! There is no wrong way to fish a creature bait, except maybe as a spinner bait trailer they tend to make spinners roll or lean. J-
  6. I have seen pan fish usually shad or blue gill take off anytime a shadow is casted above the water. It's usually a swirl though not a ring. Your bait coming out of the sky would also cast a minor shadow that could spook the already skittish fish. J-
  7. Awesome, you should try to catch a fish with the electric one. Just tie some line to the back with a spinner or something that would be sick !
  8. d**n dude should have went home and played the lotto. J
  9. Yeah that is the stuff I am referring to. J
  10. Ok so I have been collecting all the debris aka slag in a coffee can before melting lead. What can I do with that stuff there is lead mixed in with it so not sure how to get rid of it safely?
  11. You can go to YouTube and research plaster of Paris senko mold. Senko molds are simplest and senkos catch fish. melting old baits that are the color you want and already have scent included. J
  12. I will second quanjigs post. I believe the rub lies with how much money fisherman contribute to the park authority vs the amount the crew teams contribute. Hands down the rowers unfortunately win and thus get better treatment. That all being said there are plenty of weekend warriors that wake rowers by driving there vessel dangerously to close. On the other hand there are plenty of rowers that feel they own the reservoir and aren't courteous. A shoreline meeting may be the only solution. May the victor go the spoils! J-
  13. Ok for bass or any white flakey fish. Cup of milk,an egg, old bay or seasoning of choice wisked well. house audrey seasoning (it's like a season salty flour) add a tsp baking powder into it. back into wash then your fav bread crumbs or ritz crackers. Fried or baked and booyah off the chain! Wam, bam, thank you ma'am! J-
  14. Yup I guess that is why they are considered wife's tales and not facts. J-
  15. When the turtles are on the logs sunning the bass are on the beds. Or something like that! When the dogwood trees bloom the bass are on the next. If you catch and release the fish will go back and tell the others not to bite! J-
  16. That being said I think there are several more snakehead records to be broke here on the Potomac river. Were I catch my snakeheads there are a number of 16 pounders caught regularly. That is incredible if you put it in this perspective, the world record bass is 20 something pounds imagine catching 15 pounders regularly. I know I had one around 20lbs on my line that I didn't land. J-
  17. Yeah maybe so, but I believe what I believe, and that is that they spawn more than once a year. I am no biologist but from what I gather from what I read and observe they do have predators that catch kill and eat them. Not to mention all the fishermen who catch and kill them yet they still are thriving to big numbers covering hundreds of miles in only 10-15 years. Jay
  18. Nice!! They would work great for shakyheads too! J
  19. http://blogs.fredericksburg.com/newsdesk/2012/06/16/snakeheads-are-invasive-and-on-the-move/ Here is another good read on the migration of Snakeheads! J
  20. Good info thanks for posting. I gave seen them spawning throughout the summer so perhaps they spawn once a year throughout the spring and summer. I can't agree though cause how can they spawn just once a year and explode to the numbers they have reached? If I were to release 2 or for that matter 5 bass in dough creek what are the chances that in 10-15 years being able to catch them from DC to near the brackish waters of the bay? Who knows? Thanks again CMG J
  21. UPDATE:::: Today while out on the potomac I seen 3-4 snakeheads caught! 2 or 3 of them came on a rattle trap and the last one (15lbs) got caught with a bobber and white grub combo (crappie fishing technique). Get your rods and reels ready folks its that time of year again! Going to see if I cant snag me one tomorrow!!! Oops did I call them snakeheads again! J-
