  1. Haha, I agree for us New Yorkers.
  2. When this is happening to me, try wacky rigging it if you can without getting snags. It seems to work for me, just having it rigged a different way can make a huge difference.
  3. A cold front cam through last night into today, brought some rain and temps about 20 degrees cooler. Tomorrow, the rain will be gone and temperatures will be in the high 50's. I forget if the bass feed before or after fronts? I heard that fishing after a front for the first few days can be slow, is that true? I was fishing the day before the front and it was ok, caught a few. What works well for post cold front weather?
  4. I have never used any shakey heads either, but I've heard really good things about the Shak-E2 (suppose to be one of the best shakey head jigs). Let us know how they work, im definitely going to pick up some during the winter. What are you guys' favorite shakey heads?
  5. 5" Zoom trick worm in any watermelon variation, Texas or wacky rig them on a 2/0 EWG hook.
  6. Saw these at Gander Mountain and figured, what the heck! Ill try them. I've never fished anything that big, anyone who has fished them, any tips for rigging them and presentation? We aren't known for having huge bass up here, but maybe this big bait is what I need to catch a nice sized NY bass. Its something I know they've never seen. Also, what sized bass can I expect with this bait? I know bass will hit baits that are the same size as they are occasionally but is this bait designed for the biggest bass out there?
  7. When I'm out riding my bike along the river and creek that I normally fish at and see someone that is fishing from shore, I will almost always go up to them and ask them if the caught anything and general conversation. Do you guys ask other fishermen how there doing and what they are using? If the people don't seemed bothered, Ill stay and chat for a few minutes just to talk about local fishing. Sometimes people will give you valuable information too!
  8. Sounds similar to me, considering I just started fishing this year aswell. Plastic baits are great because of their price and ability to catch bass. Im trying to become better at using hard baits now like cranks, spinners, and jigs but at $5.00+ per lure, its hard to aquire a collection with limited funds. Try new baits and lures to see what produces for your particular water. Expiriment with new colors and weights and with time, you will find and catch more fish. A fews years of practice will go along way.
  9. Im going to start going for pike! Ive never caught or targeted them before though
  10. I was trying a new technique along the Niagara river where I fish a lot. I started on one end other the river and slowly worked my way down, casting into spots where I could, spending sometime where I normally wouldn't, just trying new places. I ended up underneath a overpass in a canal off the river, the water was still and clear next to one of the concrete walls/pillars that hold up the bridge. I seen between 5-10 bass stacked up there around 12" mostly. First cast got one around that length, few more and I got a decent one but I didn't have my tape measurer out since I was moving up and down the river a lot. I took a picture. Any idea what it would be in weight? (I realize there is nothing to really use to scale besides my hand) Give me an estimate if you can. The bass had some interesting dark markings on the fins and side too, and she was rather chunky.
  11. What are your guys' favorite weight amounts for t-rigs, c-rigs, jigs, etc.? What situation would you use a heavier/lighter weights? Any for certain water conditions? Thanks for your help! I need to try new weights because I know I will get a lot more bites using proper weights with certain techniques and water.
  12. What jerkbait are you talking about exactly? This may work perfect for a stop that I fish. there are weeds a few feet down all around the shore.
  13. Pretty common instinct when starting off bass fishing. Ive done it hundreds of times... when you feel a 'snag' wait a second or two to see if it keeps pulling without you reeling in. Then you will know right away if its a fish or not. Its the best feeling when you know its a fish that has just took your bait and has just started swimming away with it when...BAM you set the hook and land a nice bass! Keep learning the feeling of different structure and you start to feel real differences between fish, and weeds.
  14. Id like to take a moment and thank everyone at Bassresource, Youtubers, and fellow fishermen for all the help and advice that ive aquired this past fishing season. With this being my first full year of fishing and targeting bass, it was certainly a blast and have learned a lot from all of you. I have enjoyed going out and trying new techniques that I would have never known about until now. Hopefully I will finish up this fall on a good note and start to really organize my fishing tackle over the winter for year. I can't wait to buy new tackle and fishing gear now that I have a better understanding of what would work well for my area. Thanks again! Keep on fishin'
  15. I was fishing earlier this morning at my local river, when I noticed a huge bass just sitting close to shore. It was definitely the biggest bass I have ever seen! (mind you I live up north and the river isnt know for its largemouth) The bass had to be close to 24". While watching the bass, I hooked into a average sized bluegill, around 5" long and 3" tall, as soon as the sunfish started fighting, that bass can to life with explosive speed and power, chasing the bluegill around for nearly 2 minutes. I know bass feed on bream but to watch it in front of me in clear calm water was so awesome. All the movement brought in smaller bass, they looked tiny compared to the bucket mouth. The bass never ended up eating the fish, as the bluegill stopped fighing and swimming away, the bass stopped chasing and lost interest, and im sure he would have broke my line or the small hook would have bent so im kind of glad that that didnt happen. I was cool enough that I got to watch for a little while. The bass then swam away and I did release the exhausted bluegill unharmed. Figured Id post this because I thought it was amazing. Anyone else ever have something similar happen? How much would you guys say a 24" bass weighs?
  16. Ive never caught one, but I looked in the New York freshwater fishing regulations guide and it looks like a Burbot. Similar looking to a snakehead. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ohiogamefishing.com%2Fcommunity%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D174026&h=0&w=0&sz=1&tbnid=AaAf6YHyAsacfM&tbnh=216&tbnw=234&zoom=1&docid=LmxNHwojEn56LM&ei=cDIRUq_XOqr84APlpIDQCQ&ved=0CAIQsCU
  17. They are having a good time lol. What part of the niagara river was this?
  18. Alright good, because I hate trying to play surgen on fish. Its usually smaller ones that swallow it because I cant feel the fish on the line before its to late.
  19. Occasionally ill get bass that swallow the hook (when im using live bait). I read the article about getting out a hook from the gut through the gills but some of the fish are small and the gills wont allow me to get at the hook. If so, Ill then work at the hook with forceps if it looks like I might be able to get it without hurting the fish, sometimes this works but other times if it is a nice bass, Ill just cut the line close to the hook. Im just wondering what will happen to the fish? Will the hook rust out or stay in there forever? Will the hook allow the fish to eat properly? Ive also caught a few with hook in them already and they looked healthy so I guess they live most of the time, right? I just feel bad for the fish sometimes
  20. Alright, thanks for the help. Ill definitely remember your offer for the furture
  21. You never replied on my other thread about there being a decent place about 45 min away from buffalo?
  22. This wednesday, (Aug. 14) I am going to Letchworth state park (near Warsaw). Im going with my family for the day and I would like to try fishing around that area. I know Silver lake is partically next to letchworth and I think Ill try there. Anyone who has fished that lake, know of anywhere to shore fish and what works well in that lake? Also, Im coming from the Buffalo direction, (from the west) and If there is any smaller lakes on the way or near there, Id definitely try them aswell. Ive looked on google earth and it seems like there is a lot of ponds on the way there, (im guessing they are private) but any help and advice on where to fish around that area would be great.
  23. A texas rigged black senko, and hooked into my first real bass. I still think it was my biggest smallmouth...
  24. So at a spot I go to from shore, there must be hundreds of small panfish (rock bass, perch, sunnies, white bass) in the morning and you can often see some largemouth partrolling between the shore are thick weeds. most of the bass are small enought that they dont bother the smaller fish. Ive tried everything to get them to bite. I basically just drop the bait into the water without casting it far because theu seem to swim close to the wall. The water is clear enough to watch them go up to my line and just look at it and then swim away. Ive caught a few on a 2in minnow on a tiny jig head, but only dink bass will bite it. Ive also caught a small chubs and used it as bait and they hammered it, but that was the only thing they would hit. What would be ideal for bass that are surrounded by other small fish and that are literally inches away from the dock?
